  2. Good for you BJ. Some people don't go for the towers but i tell you what, they are a great place to go with our kids or with the ones we love that are getting up there in age. Can't tell you how many first time hunters we've taken up into the enclosed tower where you can talk and give pointers and see some deer and walk them through that first hunt. They are a great place to make memories while hunting.

  4. If doe hunting only.... I'd be there! If buck hunting only... I'd be there! I enjoy both - hunting & venison... which is why I hunt. I also like to be in the woods to just enjoy the smells, the sounds, and the feeling of being closer to our great Creator. So... just sell me the license - I'm hunting whatever is legal

  5. Hunter Orange (HO) trains people to look for hunter orange! So the LOGIC can be: if you are a hiker, mushroom picker, or just a non hunter person out and about on public land you may be a target and get shot at because the shooter is only looking for HO. NOT IN MY BACKYARD WHERE I HUNT! I don't look for HO! I look for animals that I can shoot. Granted, HO stands out well and can be seen over a long distance and has helped overt tragedies. That in itself does not make it a fool proof. I still look for animals that I can shoot. The basic concept is target identification. I hunted in Germany and Spain, neither require HO. In fact their hunting garb is muted greens and browns. The difference though is their hunter training program. It took me 6 months to get a license and I had to graduate from a very rigorous course. Bottom line was: Idiots, non-learners, cheaters do not apply - you will fail!. Here we can go into K-Mart, WallyWorld and pay our money to get a license after taking a 1 day safety course. Big Difference. Not saying we should have the same rules as other countries...BUT then again we should admonish and correct those we hunt with that seem to be a little non-conforming. If we do not do it, our friendly, know it all government will make HO laws. It is almost the same as putting "Danger: This firearm may cause injury and or death" on some rifles and shotguns I have seen in the stores. DUH - really. The next thing we will see is HO vests and hats that are embroidered with, "Warning: Not wearing this while hunting may cause death" Give me a break! As in every other activity you need to fully learn your craft. IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET!!

  8. Just like unemployment, there needs to be a timeline on how long somebody can collect welfare. Otherwise, it becomes an endless cycle and for the most part this is all the children of welfare recipients come to know!!!

  10. I guess one could use that as a good excuse then. "Ah hun, it only LOOKS small because it's wrapped in realtree camo" LOL By the way, I have no doubt Elmo will be chiming in very soon since we are discussing this part of the male anatomy.

  12. The problem with that is, alot of the areas where people hunt are quite a drive to a sporting goods store. New Jersey is different, in that there isnt as much rural area, and what rural area they do have, is fairly close to a developed area. That makes it easy to do something like that. For example, I live in an area thats a 1/2 hour drive to the closest sporting goods store. I hunt on the same property I live on. It would make it extremely inconvenient for me to have to take my deer (potentially in 70 - 80 degree weather in the beginning of October) for a @ 2 hour excursion to check it in. Now say I have to do this 3 - 5 times a year, and its going to make me not want to bother. You will end up creating an environment in which less deer are accounted for. Guaranteed.

  13. I have had lots and lots of problems with my Mercury 9.9 kicker trolling engine due to ethanol, even with the various additives (I have tried about all of them). I spoke to Mercury and they admit there is more of a problem on the smaller 4-stokes due to the smaller orifices in the carburetor. The smaller orifices are needed to satisfy new EPA rules on emissions. The smaller orifices result in finer atomization of the fuel and more complete combustion at the expense of greater liklihood of fouling. The best thing you can do on small outboards is to drain the bowl of the carburetor after each use or just disconnect the gas line and burn up whats left in the carb. You should do this even if you think your additive is effective. Advice from a marine engine mechanic with over 40 years of experience. If you leave gas with ethanol in the carburetor it will eventually leave behind the water and gunk caused by the ethanol. Even if you are using additives you will eventually get the problem if you don't get rid of the residual ethanol in the carb. I had a carb job done last winter only to have the carb get gunked up again before I even got to use use it and had to do another carburetor cleaning. By the way, Mercury recommends complete disassembly and cleaning all carburetor parts with an ultrasonic cleaner. For those interested harbor freight has one priced under $100.00. I now drain the bowl after each use. I am also in the process of switching to ethanol free gas, just filled up at the Nice and Easy in Brewerton. Its 91 octane but the engine owners manual says 87-92 is acceptable. I plan to start using this ethanol free gas for my Stihl chain saw as well.

  17. Blaze orange isnt going to "fix stupid people", it will however help prevent some/most accidental / careless shooting.

  21. For me... I enjoy working on and investing my property almost as much as sitting in the tree and harvesting a nice whitetail. It can be very expensive, it is my main hobby. I can honestly say over the past 5 years of owning my farm and busting my tail I am seeing improved hunting... and I can say that based on trail cam pics, hunting observations, and harvest data.... plus the most important reason... I enjoy it.

  27. I would still hunt but the excitement would not be the same. I hunted one mature doe and she was smart and busted me every time. That challenge was fun but nothing like hunting a large dominant monarch of the woods. Nothing gets my blood pumping more than a big buck track the size of a 30-06 round. Something about a large mature dominant buck gets me fired up more than any doe will ever get me going... Even when I see a racked deer I am not going to shoot my blood gets pumping, just something special about hunting bucks...
