  1. You know, if that became an every-day story, I would predict a dramatic decline in home burglaries. There's got to be a bit of a deterrent to reading that burglarizing homes has a very high mortality rate. The problem is that the pinkos have convinced the general public of the evilness of firearms in the home.

  4. Hunter numbers seem to be declining every year and the reasons could be many. What can be done to help those who do not get initiated into the hunting fraternity by family or friends? I am sure that there are many who would at least LEARN about hunting and then some of those would actually begin to become hunters and keep the tradition alive. Here's an idea! Dicks SG's, Gander and Cabela's all sell equipment to hunters. They have a vested interest in ensuring that their customer base keeps growing and evolving. And my local Gander store already hosts hunter education workshops/classes. What better way to partner with one or all of these outlets to start a mentoring program? They already have the facilities and equipment what remains is the mentors capability and willingness to teach. The store can do the marketing and maintain a list of mentors. The pairing can be done by being at the hunter education class and a sign up list can be posted at all the sales counters. The store could offer a limited time 10-20% mentor program discount to participants and the mentor. This could be a self sustaining program if managed and promoted properly. I plan to meet with our local store managers to see what they think. I think it will work! It will be a three way win - a win for the store - a win for the participant and a win for the mentor. Can a list of mentors be maintained on this site? It should include, name, location to mentor in and contact information. What do you all think?

  5. The sience majority of NY deer hunter have been left out to dry. The sad part is that it is not from organizations like PETA and others .it is coming from our own fraternity of selfish. selfcentered, and greedy NY so called deer hunters. A small group of people have cried so loud that they have gotten more DMZ areas put in AR . The advocates for AR have put a limit on others opportunities. The AR people think they are TV hunters , they think they are great hunters and tough luck to others who only want to deer hunt and harvest a deer. The hunting camp I belong to has 35 members with a doz. out of state hunters and we are lucky to see a deer, let alone a legal buck and that is in DMZ 40 , one of the new zones in AR. I have heard that some of the out of state hunters are giving up hunting in NY because of AR Most are saying it cost to much to sit in the woods knowing they will not see a legal buck and with no doe tags to boot, they are going to look else where. Some of people have been members for over 20 years. Thankyou advocates of AR ,you have gotten what you wanted by having fewer deer hunters in the woods so you can have the deer to yourselfs. If that is not selffish ,I don't know what you would call it. An other sad thing about AR is it is not good deer management and that is fact, don't believe me read up on it and find out for yourself. Another group of selfish greedy so called deer hunters are the NY Bowhunters coalition. They cry about everything. They don't want anyone in the woods in their season. They cried that the bow wasn't long enough, so NY gave them another two weeks and the NY Bowhunter turn around cried because NY wanted to have three days in their bow season to have a youth deer hunt. Come on you big cry babies. They cried about having crossbows during bow, they say that it is like carring a gun. Come on cry babies, I hunt with a bow and I can shoot my compound out to 40 yards as good or better than most crossbows. and as far as taking a deer it is like shooting ducks on a pond.

  7. We just need to fix the loopholes and end the abuse. At the risk of being called a racist the Oneidas (Oneida Indian Nation) have done the same thing in Madison and Oneida counties and caused a significant increase in tax's due to the shrinking amount of "taxable" property.

  9. Where in Greene County? I live in the Catskill/Leeds area and a 300lb bear (DRESSED!) was taken by my house last year. We have had two so far this year walk through the back yard at different times- at least two that we saw. And we know that they were different ones because one was bigger than the other.

  11. Nice to have left over deer meat this time of year. You don't realize how much u rely on the meat until a lean year pops up. Then u really miss it.

  14. You have never been hunting and stopped at the store or a resteraunt and had your gun in the car? If you regularly carry, you are bound to run into a situation where you simply cannot take it in somewhere with you and have to leave it in the car.

  18. You are talking about using urine on scrapes, right? I have probably killed more scrapes than I have killed deer over by putting "doe urine, doe pee, or whatever is in that bottle on a hot scrape." Have I killed bucks over scrape that were freshened with buck/and or doe pee? Sure. But the important question that can not be answered is..."How many deer, bucks and does have been spooked by augmenting a scrape with something bought and in a bottle? Or course it is a retorical question... but the point is, in my heart I believe that more hunts have been ruined by the hasty and incorrect application of scents to natural and mock scrapes than have been enhanced. In my experience, deer do not care much for urine based scents but are more interested in the pre-orbital and saliva based scents on the overhanging branch...above the scrape.

  19. Over the years, I too have had several good bucks come in on doe estrus scent. One thing I noticed in my experience is when they come in on that scent they are very cautious and don;t just roll right out and offer a shot. They'll circle the area sniffing around before they move in close. Sometimes they'll just keep going back and forth, staying down wind for what seems like forever. More times than I care to admit, they;ve busted own scent in the process.

  20. I live in SI, so I have a little more room than you. Last year I shot a doe on the last day of MZ and brought her home to butcher myself. My neighbors were *not* happy with me hanging her up and skinning her in the back yard. Heheh. The smell of her did bring in a beautiful 8 pointer to check things out. He stayed at about 20 yards watching me work for about 10 minutes before he decided he wasn't going to get any, and walked off. I wish I didn't have to drive 2-3 hours to hunt, the nicest bucks I've ever seen first hand have been a couple hundred feet from my house.

  21. I have never once had any luck at all with scents. Ive tried everything from the cheap store bought to the straight from the deer farm, expensive stuff. Other than preorbital for mock scrapes this year, Im done using scents. I find that scent control and playing the wind work far better than any scent out there.

  23. Raised Catholic, turned agnostic here. Stereotyping any of an entire group, based on the actions of a small minority is wrong. I simply don't understand the rabid hatred for religion some people harbor. Religion is not for me. Then again, neither are Salami and peanut butter sandwiches. What do I do about it? Avoid both. Crikey, in the last month here on Long Island we have had a custodian and a math teacher arrested on possession of child pornography charges. The math teacher's collection was evidently so large it took up an entire evidence van and the back seat of a car. Does this mean that, simply via association, every single employee of the public school system is a kiddie porn lover? Of course it doesn't. Should people begin a rabid, hate-filled, foaming-at-the-mouth campaign against teachers? The very idea is ridiculous. So, why the double standard? Don't like religion? Don't practice it. That's a pretty simple solution. Spouting off vitriolic nonsense and screaming that the Catholic Church is an evil organization based on the actions of a few of its members or officials makes you look worse than it does them. You come off as an arrogant, irrational, miscreant with an axe to grind. Hey, OP, how big's your kiddie porn collection? I mean obviously if as others have mentioned, you are a former teacher, and we know public school employees have collected kiddie porn, then you too must also collect kiddie porn, right? So, how big's your collection?

  24. yeah, speed means nothing to me. That is what it is advetised at. Who knows what it really shoots. Just know that it is WAY better than my old bow. I bought a Block Black. My old bow would stick an arrow in the target a bit. This bow, it takes 2 hands to pull them out. They go half way through. its crazy. Anyways, thanks for the arrow weight knowledtge WNY. I will look into that. I am a student of everythign i do. I always try and learn. so, I appreciate everyones insight.

  25. Well, there ya go. The silent majority is indeed silent, aren't they? So what good are they? And who cares about their opinions and how they think the world is suffering? The fact is that the organizations that you are whining about are active, energetic, advocates for what they believe. If you don't like it then take your whining somewhere besides internet forums and play the game the way it is supposed to be played. Nobody cares that you don't have the spine to do anything but complain. I get a bit irked everytime I see these people claiming "Well gosh, their views don't represent me". Get over it ..... if there are so many people who disagree with ARs and the NYB views then stop your crying and get involved like those people did. If you can't work inside of those groups then start your own. Put your damn money and effort where your mouth is instead of just moaning about those that do. I'm sorry if I appear to be coming on a little strong about this, but it is just something that finally had to be said. Enough of this worthless bashing. If you have such strong feelings about these issues then do something useful and worthwhile about it.
