  1. I was hunting with a broken leg and recovering from surgery...Talked...well cried Mr. B into driving me to a brush blind and helping me crawl in with the cast in a plastic bag nestled on a couple of pillows...There I sat with no place to go until I called him...that morning I called in a trespasser and a red fox trotted right up to the end of blind....I was ready to shoot when he caught wind of the cast...nearly turned himself inside out turning to run....no turkeys but it was fun....till the codeine wore off....lol

  2. I don't see how anyone can do it and be successful without value adding services. Overhead and liability outweigh what you can make in a food plotting business. You'd need to A. become certified, or educated to offer management advice B. Sell other things or services along the lines of cams, seed, stands, etc. C. Know how to market and sell. Food plots have narrow time periods where they can be planted or prepared and you can only be in one place at a time. To me, it's a grand idea if you want to try to offset your costs, but it's not a money maker for a family if that is all you are going to do. This seems to come up every year here.

  5. I don't mean to hijack my own thread but I just listened to a special news report where Canadian law enforcement thwarted a bombing of an Amtrak train that goes from Toronto to NY. Supposedly unrelated to the Boston bombings. These sewer rats are coming out from everywhere! I say we recall all our troops from all over the world and where ever they maybe and post them all along our borders with Canada and Mexico at every port, train station, bus station and airport to keep these rats out!!!

  7. I'm going to give away a turkey call, not sure what kind yet. Any successful youth hunter that scores will qualify to win. It's going to be very simple. Post a short story about your hunt and a picture of yourself with your bird. You can give the stats on your bird but it will not count towards my decision on the winner. It will be based solely on the quality of your picture and the content of the story. As soon as I decide which call to give away I will post a picture of it. Entry deadline for this contest will be April 24, 2013 at 9:00pm EST. Good luck to all participants in the youth hunt this year. ** This is not run by HuntingNY.com

  9. I can't believe our government is charging the little sewer rat bomber as a civilian because he's a naturalized citizen. I say he lost his citizenship when he detonated those bombs and treat him as an enemy combatant.

  11. i know while majority of you are getting geared up for Turkey season im getting so antsy for deer season. i usually have a 2 month period where the obsession is not as bad (February / March) but after that i get so pumped for up coming deer season. slap on one of my million Drury outdoors DVDs and kick back. May usually means Turkeys but usually Drury's release their latest DVDs and I buy a few lol. Had to get that out lol... To say i am obsessed with these whitetail, well that would be an understatement! we all hear from our significant other with their statements about being obsessed where we reply "no just dedicated" or "its just my time to climb a tree and slow things down" but we are really thinking YUP OBSESSED...

  13. We have always had great luck at this property and this hunt would prove no different. After a close encounter here on an early season setup we gave the property a long rest knowing the next setup would have a good chance of connecting.

  15. May 1st is so close I can smell it boys! This is your last week to figure out the who's who and the what's what of Toms in your areas. I'm not seeing nearly the number of birds on my farms that I have in past years unfortunately. In fact I have been religiously scouting the past few weeks and have only managed to track down one long beard!! He fly's down with a hen and jake every morning and makes his way to a large green field about 300 yards from the roost. I set up my blind Saturday evening in the field they fly down too, so I could get a better grasp on exactly what it is that they're doing. Got some pretty nice pics and thought I'd share one with ya.

  17. Smaller parcel size is more favorable to bow hunting. I bet you could give a clear relationship to average parcel size and bowhunting # numbers...as the size decreases, the bowhunters increase. Also, a bit more personal observations...the big buck trend favors bowhunting imo. Sure, orange army has numbers, but many hardcore people hit the rut with bows. Tough tough tough situation for everyone...xbows, how, in what season, season structure...as people noted, as time goes forward, the options become more scrutinized. No answer is going to please everyone and it's a road we must go down....someone is going to be stepped on in one way or another and someone is going to be happy.

  20. I'm not sure which post you are replying to, but in general your comments are valid. The only problem is that there are a whole lot of people who will never be in a position to buy or lease sufficient acreage at today's prices. And if they can scrape together enough cash to buy real estate, priorities mandate that they keep the old lady happy by buying a residence first. So, it may seem logical to buy hunting land, but it is not that often possible for a lot of people. So a lot of people are relegated to hunting public land. The quality of the hunting experience for these people is certainly far different from what attracts most people to hunting. Many people (most?) don't get into hunting for the carnival atmosphere and the hub-bub that exists in some of these public hunting areas, and I believe that may be one of the many reasons for shrinking hunter numbers. No it's nothing that can be solved, and there are only a limited number of options available for distancing yourself from the crowds. I do wish there was some way to describe how it was when I first began bowhunting. How posted signs were an actual oddity and you could hunt pretty much anywhere, and even public lands seemed deserted in the bow season. And how I went years before I actually saw another bowhunter in the woods. There is no way to explain how all that solitude in my hunting and the feelings of being emersed in a semi-wilderness atmosphere was the actual catalyst that got me involved with bowhunting. I'm not sure that I ever would have been all that interested in bowhunting if I had not had those kinds of quality experiences everytime I went out. So yes, the only thing constant is change, and unfortunately those changes are seldom positive or useful. And in some cases there are no options to "cowboy up" and there are many hunters who are simply leaving our ranks and will never understand what the big deal about bowhunting was ever all about.

  22. Awesome! One is better than none in my opinion. You never know another longbeard can slip in to the area any day. Keep your hopes up! I will be in PA until April 30th and then making the trek up to camp that afternoon. Just got a phone call last night from our friends. 3 toms hanging out right around camp! That def got the heart pumping last night! Good Luck Whitetail Addict!

  26. This is my 12 year old son Luke on his first turkey hunt with his Uncle Kevin. Unfortunately I was unable to be with him due to work commitments, but he had the time of his life with his uncle and it was a pretty special day for his uncle too, because Luke shot this beauty on his sons birthday. His son passed away 10 years in a motorcycle accident. They both said that Kevin Jr. Put that turkey in front of them to shoot. They started out the morning going to Uncle Kevin's hunting spot and about 15 minutes into the hunt they heard a Tom in his roost. It came down from its roost and into the field approximately 15 yards away. Now this was a big boy, 12 inch beard and 2 inch spurs, but he never presented a head shot there was a branch in the way. Then some hens came into the field and he strutted away following the hens. They took a a mid morning break for some hot chocolate and coffee and went to a different spot and that is when they spotted this nice jake about 30 yards away. Luke picked up his 12 gauge Ted Wiiliams shotgun and with ace precision took his first turkey. Not bad for a first the jake had a 4 inch beard and less than 1:2 inch spurs and weighed approximately 14 lbs. Needless to say i think he's hooked for life. Hopefully next year I will be able to experience this with him on the next youth season. We are going to make it a family tradition to hunt with his uncle Kevin.

  27. You could buy one of these and make it a dedicated turkey gun...My hunting partner uses an H&R 10 ga. single shot turkey special he bought for around $150.00...All he did was mount a red dot scope on it and it was ready to roll.

  29. No need to get anyone's back, its just an internet forum with folks giving opinions. We're not in a bar room or back alley getting ready for a slugfest. Just stop for one second and look around, you are more than likely in your bathrobe or sweats with your slippers on and with your wife watching American Idol in the background, its all ok, breath in slowly and deeply close your eyes and exhale thru your fingertips slooooowly. See no one's trying to hurt you....

  31. Yes, another pipe-dream that we have been sold as the salvation of our energy future. You know, if all the costs were to be taken into account including the ripple effects in our food costs, I would not be surprised if the most expensive petro isn't a damned sight cheaper. But all that has been justified also and even crammed down our throats by the government. And let's not forget those giant whirly-gigs that they have plopped all over the hills. Those came with a whole lot of stories and promises also. Results that only come by way of very hefty government subsidies (code for our tax dollars). There's a lot of people getting very wealthy off our gas afflictions. They have all learned how to work the system with various schemes and gimmicks.

  33. Do yourself a favor and Avoid the 'Throw & Grow' type seed mixes. They are mostly rye (lawn) grasses which will grow almost anywhere, giving you the 'feel good' reaction. It has a poor draw, and whats worse by the time you realize the mistake it becomes a major hemorrhoid to get rid of. If you can get hold of a rear-tine tiller that's a plus. edit to add; Clover can be some maintenance but a good mix has its rewards. Also don't rule out chicory. It has some draw and taproot that can help survive drought.

  38. I understand the frustrations of having a deer hunt busted by human interuptions. In fact where I hunt you can add in mountain bikers and hikers into the possible interuptions. It's not a happy event for sure but unless you have complete control of your hunting lands (lease, ownership, or family/friend owned), it is something that just happens. It's not a question of anybody being disrespectful of each other. It's more of a situation where we have all kinds of land uses competing for the same piece of land. It hasn't always been that way. Years ago before the bloom of posted signs and infinite property divisions, you could have all these people and never know they were out there. they were all dispersed into a thin almost transparent group of people. However, leasing and posting have concentrated a lot of people onto state lands, and I have seen situations that could actually be termed "crowded" hunting conditions. Yes, that does lead to busted hunts, broken deer patterns and some severe frustrations. It has nothing to do with dis-respect, it is just an unfortunate evolution of land use and hunter concentrations. There are ways to position yourself where these problems aren't as likely to happen and where the day-light deer patterns are still relatively un-disturbed. That really is the only solution, and even then there will occasionally be a busted hunt. It has all simply become part of the game. It's unlikely to ever improve, so the only real solution is to adapt. Sure, you can complain about it (probably a natural reaction), but the reality is that it won't really do any good because the situation is not going to get better and in fact is far more likely to get worse as the years go on.

  42. Ya think maybe the show might be scripted and that the Lady whose property they tresspassed on knew the script also . With the show being televised , there is no way she wouldn't have eventually found out about the deer recovery and those guys would be in deep doo-doo if that wasn't so . I would even bet that the dead doe was placed there just for the show .

  43. I can tell you personally that the NYS ELA state test that my 8th grade students just finished this week was a grueling three days! The test consisted of 9 long passages with 72 multiple choice questions, 3 more passages and 3 short responses with and essay on day 2, and 3 more passages with 5 short responses and another essay for day 3. Grow, the sad part is that this test is for the teachers. It has no effect on the student what so ever. The test scores a student receive does not reflect the type of classes they take the following year. This test, which many parents are telling their children not to worry about or having them "opt out" is the same test that teachers are being elavuated on. If we truly want to improve the educational system, we should follow the model of other countries that have surpassed the United States. Most of those countries do not have standardized testing and they also tract their students into two categories. One as college ready and the second prepares them for a trade. In my honest opinion, today belief that every student should go to college is flawed. I have friends that have become incredibly successful from learning a trade and never attending college.
