Here's my daughters 2013 xbow buck, she has been helping me on and off for the last month or so, she tucked one eye, (I did the 1st one to show her) built up the nose, and did a good amount of the airbrushing. Happy Dad!9 points

My wife gets it. She just doesn't think its for her. But she does support my passions in whatever I do...including hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk4 points

Depends on what you want. Single shot, revolver, semi? How far you plan to shoot? In a revolver, I would go with a 44 mag, which you could shoot 44 special out of, or load the .44 mag down a little if you are concerned about recoil. I used to use 200 gr bullets which recoiled a little less and still did a fantastic job on whitetails. Or a .45 Long Colt. Very manageable recoil and does a great job. Not a big fan of a .357 for deer. In a single shot like a T/C, the choices are many, 308,7-08, 35 rem, among many. I used to hunt exclusively with handguns years ago.3 points

Here is a novel idea. If you don't own it stay off it. Another novel idea; find out who owns the land, ask permission and offer to pay half the taxes! I post my land but it sure as hell isn't doing me any favors to incur the cost, time, and aggravation. Why should I, or any other landowner feel compelled to post their land as a "favor" for strangers who want to bumble about aimlessly in the woods. I just don't get what's so hard about this. It seems part of the same handout mentality. You got it and I don't, I want it and I'll take it if you won't give it to me and too bad if you don't like it...after all it's your fault because you've got it and I don't. Oh yeh...and I want it for free!3 points

Definitely not. My wife was belly crawling next to me in Wyoming when I shot my first antelope. And there always some sort of wild game for dinner. Funny though.2 points

My wife buys me hunting gear. Winchester 1300 and Winny ML years back, NWTF membership, snow shoes, and the list goes on. She doesn't hunt but loves the turkey and venison I bring home. Shes gets it, the woods are my happy place and I'm outta her hair.2 points

My buddy has the same gun. Think I'll ask to shoot it a bit. See how I like it and go from there. Leaning towards this one if i like it. $1 a shot isn't much more than shooting .22 rimfire these days2 points

It's more about the fit of the gun than the caliber when it comes to 'felt' recoil in a handgun.2 points

10 rnd mag is perfectly legal. You're only allowed 6 squirrels, so you if you load the magazine with 7 rnds and use one as a sighter you're good to go.2 points

It some areas it could be done by making a list of what rifle rounds are legal and not legalizing high powered rounds. Say .357 Mag, .44 Mag, 454 Casull, etc. The list could be made up by figuring anything similar to the velocity of a shotgun slug or muzzle loader should be legal. If anything, it might sell a few more rifles in NY state. But maybe NY doesn't want that.2 points

Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.2 points

Ok. So. No cracks in the limbs. Just some screws and a rivet that popped, and a few scratches. Looks like the string is good. It's going to cost me 100-150. Much better than I expected. I'm praying he doesn't see anything else wrong with it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

same here. she got the full dose of hunting season for many years before we tied the knot. knew what she was getting into and likes venison. It, however is always a struggle with time. Hunting the right way takes time. With a young family you need to know when to compromise. Don't abuse the leash they give and do your part with chores and paying the bills and spend as much time as you can doing family stuff in the offseason and you should be fine She likes to track and is happy when i have success. She's thought about hunting, but i tend not to push it. Hunting is my sacred alone time. I love my wife, but i'm not sure i want her in the blind with me. She's shot her fair share of squirrels so i know she can do it. Maybe i'll get into duck hunting some day. i use this line all the time. Would you rather me out gambling and drinking? Or going to bed at 9:30 on a friday night so i can be up at 4:30? haha.1 point

I gotta admit it's comforting in knowing that my wife can rack a shell and light someones world up if they break in our house. We have no kids so I keep 3 guns in my bedroom with loaded tubes & clips. With all the firepower I have, I'll be God damned if someone takes us out in our own home!1 point

you said that the .454 casull had too much kick. you can shoot .45 long colt in that too and like pistolp said a lot less recoil and a very good deer round1 point

Sorry guys I was trying to share the link on taptalk last night from my phone but I could not figure out how to do it. Let me know if you can view video from this link. https://vimeo.com/1054523691 point

I've trained myself to always draw with my trigger finger behind the trigger, actually pushing the trigger forward. Having shot with my fingers for many, many years, I found it almost impossible to retrain my brain to keep my finger from occasionally putting pressure on the trigger of a mechanical release during the draw. Even the release-to-fire setup didn't work for me, but I haven't had an inadvertent release since. It acts like a safety: my finger doesn't move to the 'active' position 'til I'm ready to shoot. One less thing to think about when the adrenaline is going.1 point

I was told by my local ECO that before we start making any trespassing calls that we must post the entire property according to the rules set down by DEC.1 point
-
You aren't correct on this. If the land is not "legally" posted the only thing you can do is ask them to leave. Then they need to be sent a formal communication like a certified letter stating the land is posted and they have to permission. THEN if they are caught again you can press charges immediately.1 point

I found a local station that has non ethanol gas. It is all Iuse in everything but my truck. A little more expensive, but they start run and no problems.1 point

My wife grew up on a farm hunting with her father. According to him, she never shot anything because she was too busy reading her book as giant bucks stood there. She's gone out with me a bunch of times, every time she brings a book. I am not sure if she could shoot one, she says she could. She loves to eat venison, helps with the butchering process, and thinks I should kill every deer out there. She is extremely pissed this year because one ate her beans in the garden. She said she's going to shoot that one. I guess we'll see.1 point

Anyone else get surprised and end up with a DMP? I thought I was just donating $10 to the state but I was shocked to see I ended up getting a DMP that works out for both my home and right behind where I work. (Nothing better than being able to rush out behind my work and hunt for an hour before dark) Let the count down begin.1 point
-
I remember I got my dmp tag sent in the mail. I had a big bodied doe dead to rights and I couldn't take the shot because I didn't have the tag. I was so bummed out and when I got home I had a letter from the dec with the dmp tag for that doe lololol something died in me that day lol1 point

I am the one that you are talking about. I filmed my friend shoot the bear. While we never put it on the scale the taxidermist estimated his live weight at approximately 225 pounds. It was a male estimated to be 3 plus years old. The taxidermist said that in another four weeks or so the bear would've put on about another 75 pounds. Believe it or not he measured the skull of this bear and it just missed being Pope & Young by three quarters of an inch I believe. This was the first time I had ever been on a bear hunt and I actually thought the bear was small, But after talking with the taxidermist and seening a few other bears that were brought in my friends bear was not as small as I thought. I will try to see if I can post a link here for the video.1 point

I put it in a tin can that sets next to my drill press to lubricate and help cool the drill bits when drilling metal. Works pretty good.1 point

I thought NYC was big but after being in Shanghai It now appears small in comparison. The food is different not like the Chineese places in NY. One good thing there is no tipping in China it's considered an insult. The last I wanted to do was insult the Chineese. Dave1 point

I agree with SteveB. As far as I'm concerned this goes far beyond what is legal, it is a matter of respect, or rather disrespect in many cases. People who actively trespass and feel the need to find excuses and loopholes to back up their trespassing ways are scum bags in my opinion, and poorly represent hunters and hunting overall.Trespassers, poachers, jacking deer at night by spotlight and so on all fall into the same category as far as I'm concerned. What is even sicker is when adults drag their kids around teaching them the same crap.1 point

Fact is no one should have to post their land - if you don't own it or have written permission, you don't go. Period. The paper listed above is opinion written by someone doing research - not part of the NYS penal or environmental codes. Lines like make me wonder who writes such stuff. How can anyone possibly know what months you replace signs?1 point

i put my name and my upstate adress on my signs. Don't want anyone to know owner lives downstate.1 point

If you read the NYON article, it's mainly retailers complaining about not being able to sell the 200+# Xbows they took from their suppliers. Pretty sure Biz is right, new Xbow regs simply carried over some of older ones which were originally used to describe the length, width, draw wgt of a Xbow as a legal implements in NYS. BTW - A Xbow's 3X the draw weight (~180# vs 60#) of a compound does NOT equate to proportional increases in fps. My 10pt is 180# and shoots somewhere in the range of 330fps with ~100Ke. Much better performance than compounds of the 1990's era, but pretty similiar fps/Ke as most compound models on the current market.1 point

Red dot will work but it's more of a fast shot at closer ranges, sight. With that heavy barreled gun I think I would opt for a shotgun scope. IMHO1 point

Yup, There are all kinds of big deer that have been taken in our area that had never been seen before. Some of that might be that they never were here before and got driven into the area by the orange army, or perhaps rut has pulled them into the area temporarily. Or maybe they simply are far better at avoiding us than we ever could imagine. Even with the advent of cameras everywhere, the big guys are pretty good at staying out of the picture. Those that I have seen, are seldom seen more than once.1 point

In preparation for this years deer hunting I've packed on 20 pounds of craft beer for insulation. Hope my hunting gear still fits.1 point

It's probably too late to wish you luck and say be careful!! Good to hear you'll be headed back this way soon. I've had some trail cams out up on your farm; didn't think you were coming back this fall, I'll pull them out later today.........thanks for the heads-up. Grins....1 point

That was my assumption - he was interested in the peanut butter. I did not have a drop cloth, but quickly learned that their fur is extremely resilient to anything you would encounter in the woods; especially because I was dragging it at a snail's pace.1 point

This bear hunt is going to ruin the bow season, there will be way to much activity in the woods and it will affect the deer. I can't believe it is a 10 year plan.1 point
