  1. I sat watching all the turkeys wakeing around me...learned alot this morning...was trying to decide whether to shoot one when they dropped down when I heard foot steps behind me...checked the watch and it was just 6:58 I got the bow ready and in slipped a rack....to my rt...perfect...I'm lft handed.... he was moving through the trees and I was following him with the scope at around 17 yards a turkey putted in the trees and he stopped..I squeezed off the shot and he took two bounds and stopped to look around...dang I thought I missed! then his knees went together and the hip swayed...he tried a wobbly walk but 20yrds after the hit he tipped over...it was a perfect hit...I actually tried to recock the bow but it wouldn't catch???I have to check it out later...I was going to sit and see what the turkeys did...they weren't upset until I started gathering gear to leave then what a racket..lol great morning and out of old faithful stand...all it took was a corn cutting to put them back on track...OMG he stinks...all rutted up...

  3. The giant.... It's been an incredibly tough 3, buckless seasons !!! Letting them go and watching them grow is tough, and for me it's even tougher to continuously get nocturnal giants on the cams and barely ever have sightings. I have in the past 5 years of leasing this property, seen some of the biggest deer of my life, mainly on camera, or past or before legal light. So this year was no different. Couple monsters on the cams, always at night. My birthday was November 1st, hunted all day and didn't see much. Sunday my parents wanted me to come over for dinner, which anybody, including them that know me, know I'm hard to commit to anything during daylight hours, October to january especially during the rut. Well, I commited, and went out sun morning and saw nothing but a fawn. got back to the house around 1130 and decided to hang my new cuddy back near a stand I hadn't used yet this year. As I drove the 4 wheeler back to the house I found myself 50 yards and face to face with a giant. I kept driving and he kept watching. I got about 150yards away and stopped to investigate ( and wipe the drool from my mouth) . I noticed he had a doe locked down in some thick stuff. So I headed back to the house to devise a plan. Unfortunately I could barely think let alone concentrate on the perfect kill plan. Either way, j was going to have to decide, family dinner or kill a giant. I'm a new father, and it does have me thinking differently, so I decided I would go to dinner. On our way to my parents I was taking a slow drive and glaring in the woods, and of course, who do I see trying to cross the road but the giant ! I quickly hopped out of the truck and scared him back into the woods. I could barely keep myself together. Since then I have been a wreck. One thing on my mind, the giant. We have all been there ! Had Wednesday off and was in the woods all day except a 30 min crap n sangwich break.... only saw 2 small bucks all day. Hanging my head and thinking I lost my one shot at the giant I still kept my fire and was in the stand this am by 530. Saw nothing but a button buck all day, till 920, when I caught a flash of brown followed by a chunk of antlers. he was on a mission, head down through the golden rod, making his own trail as he went. I really only had one small window to shoot, so I drew back and by the time I was ready to stop him he was hidden under 6' of swamp weeds... let down the bow... he kept coming but slowly heading for the thick stuff and into never ever land...I picked out a spot under some apple trees that would be my hail mary spot... he kept coming... I stopped him...let the rage extreme fly...lumenok glowing I saw the arrow hit him center mass, good height. Ugh. Oh no. i could not tell you what was happening to me for the next half hour. I decided to wait in the stand. Marginal shot, maybe, but was hoping for liver and hoping that nasty extreme would do work on him. so after an episode of tremors and shaking like a Crack head, 30 min had passed. So I got down.....blood !!! The giant had an arrow threw him !! Found a huge spray of blood on impact and could see blood at least 10 yrds up the run he took. Being cautious I decided to give him 2 hours. I did, when I started tracking I could not believe the blood trail. He went a total of 80 yards and piled up. It was a liver/ gut shot, but it worked, and I am one happy hunter. The best part is that after all the exciment calmed down I realized he's not even the big guy I have on the trail cam !! I will be greatful for him but my goodness what a great season I could have with both !! Who knows, who cares. The giant is dead and I am still in disbelief!!! If you just read all of this, thanks, and good luck to you !! Let em go and watch em grow !! 19.5" inside. 10.5" g2 that's 2.25" thick, great mass, just an aweome deer. Feel free to score from pics !

  10. Sat in my swamp stand this afternoon. Haven't seen but two deer in there all year. One was big doe I lost last weekend. Saw one squirrel all day and at 445 was getting ready to call it a day when I hear some crashing. Look up into pine lot and out comes a six point I got on camera a bunch of times. Nose to ground and movin quick. Grabbed the bow, Drew and let out a bleat. Stopped at 4 yards slight quartering away. He didn't make it 40 yards before he pilled up. Someone had grazed him in the neck in last couple weeks scabbed up and got a little infection goin on. Still not a bad buck for a crazy over pressures area.

  12. The hard Hunting is over till Gun season starts. It was a very good Bow season. The first 2 weeks I harvested 2 nice mature Does. The following weeks it slowed a little, I was still seeing Deer but no Bucks. Last Sunday evening a real nice 8 pt came up through the Hardwoods at 120 yds, I gave 3 soft grunts he turned and came in to 40 yds, He presented me no shot. Since Sunday it has been a constant flow of Doe and Bucks. Saturday morning was perfect cold and very light breeze, A real slow start, At 8:45 3 Doe out at 60 yds Then a small 6 pt, a Spike ,the big 8 pt was back, I grunted he never even looked, About 5 minutes later a real nice 4pt walked out of my pines at 21 yds. Double lunged him, A great blood trail, A tough drag up the hill. The freezer is full. 2 DMPs left. I'm taking a couple days off, Any more deer will be given to friends that are not as lucky.

  13. Killed this deer in PA, not NY with a crossbow earlier this week. I switched over to crossbow here 10 years ago when they became legal. If this is NY only, I'll take the post down.

  15. Had 2 hours, 11:00 - 1:00 to sit in the back woods at home today. No blind or stand at home so I sat in a blow down. Saw deer leaving bedding area from wrong side and that was it. Then, when I walked out I stopped to check the trail camera. Opened it up turned it off looked up and saw antlers coming straight at me. Dropped my pack, with quiver attached, dropped myself down next to it, nocked an arrow and immediately drew. Stayed at full draw for some time as he did a semi circle around me at 15 yards. Scooted around on my butt following him waiting for a clear shot. Just before he stepped into an opening he changed his mind and stayed in the thick stuff. Really exciting! I'm going to have to find a way to sit closer to that spot and still see them coming. Pretty proud of myself for being able to get so close to getting a shot on such short notice! I wish the camera was on. I would have documented the whole thing.

  16. Is there a reason for limiting the # of "Likes" you can give out in a day? You can burn through them quickly now with the harvest threads. Can that # be increased?? I just got an error, "You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day".

  20. 35 yards is a long poke with an arrow. Just sayin..... Sound like a shoulder or brisket shot. They bleed a lot at first, but not usually fatal. Good luck on your search.

  21. If you start searching after 10 minutes on a suspect hit, all you do is make the odds of recovery go way down.

  23. Shot this wide 8 pt yesterday not long after getting in the stand around 9:30am. He was grunting and following a group of does. He walked into a clear lane at 30yds and I let a 125gr Sonic head fly, hitting him right behind the shoulder with a complete pass through. He gave a slow short run before stopping and falling over. This wasnt his 1st time having an arrow flung at him as you can see the huge gash along his left side belly, took a nice chunk outta his rt leg too. Didnt slow him down a bit. Hes now my best buck to date with any weapon as he beats my 2010 bucks 18" inside width by over an 1" The sharp rear molars tell me hes most likey 2.5 yo. Local: Rockland co. Bow: Martin Nemesis 35

  24. Second of the year with my Matthews in 7R. Hardest shot I've made so far ever in my third year bow hunting. He was angling from my right to behind my stand out of range. As he was finally close enough I had to stand up, turn to about 5 o'clock (not fall), draw, stop him walking, aim and shoot in just about one motion. Found him down 80 yards away.

  31. Good luck...good rule of thumb...even if you think it's a good hit...sit tight at the very least 30 mins, if you can't see the deer down.....then go to hit area and look for arrow...if you don't see it....back out for at least 2 hours....

  32. Shot at 415, quartering away at about 35 yards. Thought I heard a lung collapse noise when I shot it. Deer went into the corn field briefly but then came back out. My guess is the arrow was in somewhere and the deer did not enjoy walking corn with it. Went to find the arrow and blood after 10 mins. I could see the deer and it rounded the corner of a corn field so I knew it was not laying down close by. Waited about two hours after seeing blood. Tracked over a mile, maybe mile and half. Bled like a stuck pig and I kept expecting to see it dead. No such luck. I'm wondering now I did not hit vitals and it's really a lost cause. I'll look and hope in the morning. I did see some clotting type blood. Seemed like it was trying to close up the wound. It rained hard here 20 or so minutes ago. But it only lasted a few minutes. Hope no more rain..

  39. Took this buck with my Carbon Express Crossbow Monday morning 3 November. It is my first cross bow deer. I initially resisted the move to a cross bow but felt I was an interesting piece of weaponry and liked what I heard about its reputation for clean kills. I hunted two very enjoyable days in the ADK's last week but Monday was my first day hunting in the Southern zone this year near our present home. Got my butt into the woods early in morning in spite of 15- 20 degree F chill factors, NW wind 12 -15. Climbed into my tree stand at 0630. Didn't see a thing, 1000 hours came and went with no sign of deer and I started thinking about coming out of the tree stand and heading down to the house to dig some potatoes for supper. But told myself " the deer could be moving this morning because it is cold, you lazy comfort loving son of gun, you are going to stay in this tree at least another hour!" At about 1030 I saw a medium sized doe moving coming toward the stand. She looks back over her shoulder. Suddenly a buck emerges! He is on her trail! He proceeds closer to the stand but is moving quickly. At 20 yards I made a "verbal buck grunt". He stops. I fire an arrow into his rib cage and hear a "thwack". The buck runs to the west and I see him slow down as he goes out of view. I wait 10 minutes and get out of my tree stand. I locate the arrow that I fired and determine it has passed completely through the animal. I believe the arrow took out both lungs. I walk to where I saw him last and find him there only about 35-40 yards from the shot. I said a prayer of thanks for the animal and the way it all went down so quickly for the deer.

  40. Aquired a new piece of land this year in 7S and did some scouting..Found a nice grove of Oak trees bearing acorns adjacent to thick cover in a transition from hardwoods to pines.I hunted it a few times without much action until Monday morning. The wind blew hard all weekend then finally monday it dawned calm and clear.Setup my climber with the wind in my face and set in..I had things to do back at the cabin and only intended to hunt till 9am. Well 9 am comes and I stand up and take the arrow off the Excalibur and put it in the quiver,,As i'm pulling up the rope I hear movement to my right and I see the back of a deer through the pines only about 15 yds away! I gently take the arrow back out of the quiver put it on the crossbow and flick off the safety. i got deer walking right to me along the logging road only 10 yds away.First in a range was a doe and a yearling..another doe..a small button buck...then a nice big doe bringing up the rear. I put the crosshairs on her and let it fly.I saw the lumenok make a perfect shot and she ran 20 yds and fell over..she got back up and stumbled and fell for good. Venison for the freezer!.now its time for some horns.. Excalibur Matrix 310 , Illum.Diablo arrow and Excalibur Boltcutter 150 grn fixed broadhead.

  41. I took a nice plump doe this morning at 26 steps from the uprooted tree I was sitting against. I shot low thinking she may duck at the shot, but she never had time to react and I plugged her straight through the heart. As soon as I pulled the trigger, her side exploded in a cloud of red! She dropped in only 50yds after a the bolt passed completely through her. Sure wish we had some of yesterdays snow left for dragging today, but at least I wasn't freezing my nuts off,lol

  42. I have a 2-7X32 on mine. I prefer to keep my gun as light and compact as I can. Makes for a fast handling easy to carry package. While hunting I never turn it up above 3 power anyways.

  46. Biz, My Dad got me a pair of sheds from a Pere David's when I was little. I've been obsessed with them ever since. It was really hot out. We had to skin it, quarter it, and get it on ice right away. My girlfriend is also my taxidermist, so luckily she was there and she took care of the cape.
