If she plans to live in the Long Island/NYC area after college, a St. John's degree will have a lot more influence on job prospects in this area. I know a lot of St. John's grads who work in finance, law, broadcasting, and business. There's a pretty strong network locally. I don't mean any disrespect to Cortland- but, I don't think a Cortland degree would be as valuable.2 points

Interesting opinions from all of you. Thank you for your comments. We just had a conversation with her during dinner about the subject. I basically said to her that she needs to look at everything surrounding both schools and that she needs to make an informed decision and that she needs to give us a rational reason as to why she likes or dislikes a particular school and not it's "because I want to go". We told her that she needs to consider what she would be dealing with on a daily basis up there compared to down here including the weather, (and as we all know its much colder up in Cortland than down on LI during the winter ... Well okay, most winters with this past one being an exception to the norm and you long islanders know what I'm talking about). She must also think about the opportunities presented to her down in NYC compared to being up in a small town both from what is available for her to do on a weekend as well as job placement and internship opportunities while she is in school. She also needs to understand that going closer to home we are readily available to help her compared to her being up in Cortland where we cannot just jump on the parkway and get to her. I do want her to go away but I want her to do so for the right reasons. What those right reasons are will be the deciding factor in her decision. Hopefully that the decision is right for my family as a whole. Stay tuned.....2 points

Guys... I don't know what to say at this point. Today I ran up the hill behind the house to go try and call some turkeys to the camera. I found where some gobblers left some fresh tracks in the snow so I was pretty pumped and hopefull to see some action! Not 100yds past where I was gawking at those tracks right on the main trail, I almost tripped over this guy not 3ft in front of me before I noticed it! As soon as I seen this sucker I recognized it as a familiar buck I have some history with.... IT'S TUBBY!!! Now if I could ever find where he's hiding those right side antlers I be the happiest shedder in the world! Antlers- 6 Sets- 0 Dead bucks- 1 Dead doe/fawns- ?????2 points

That is correct. Also the same target point weight as your broadheads. Before the season, you should practice with your broadheads to make sure the point of impact is the same as your target points.2 points

Just curious on what everyone does during the off season in preparation for the up coming deer season... Trimming lanes/trails, hanging new treestand, up keep on existing treestands, food plots... Think im heading down next week to get some trees chopped down for fire wood/making new lanes for new treestands. And im just getting that "itch" to get down there and start working on the land. Not to mention the cabin up keep and maintenance... We plan on building a new deer hanger,(old one was just an old oak tree we had a few pulleys bolted to) pour new piers for and extention to the cabin. And what ever else pops in my head while I'm working. I'm always thinking of something new.1 point

I ended up with close to a gallon and a half of syrup this year, just from 3 trees. I paid $30 for 4 taps, buckets, cheese cloth and a couple of funnels. Other than the cheese cloth, that will all be used again, so I dont count it in the expense. I spent $40 for propane to boil. I still have a full tank left, so take $18 off of that, and I have $22 into a gallon and a half of syrup. The big expenditure was time, but it really wasnt too bad, as I was getting plenty of stuff done around the house at the same time. Next year Im going to expand my operation a bit by tapping trees on my fathers property. There, Ill be using taps fitted with tubing running to a 55 gallon drum or two as collection points. Ill just need tubing and taps, the drums I am getting at no cost. I am going to pick up a second burner and install a valve to run them off of natural gas from the house. It will cost me even less than it did this year and Ill end up with more syrup. Its not a pricey hobby really, and breaks up the monotony of the crap weather this time of the year.1 point

the design is meant for the stiff wad to stay with the shot longer to keep it together longer. some are getting great results with ported, tight chokes but it's working against the design and just utilizing the dense shot at that point. not sure why they don't put HW shot in a normal wad for those setups.1 point

What has not been mentioned and is of the most importance is...for the major and or second choice major she is looking to have...what is the school ranked in those areas...will getting good grades in those there get her into a top notch grad school?they need to look at the program specific ratings..turn overs and internship programs NOW.1 point

Come on guys, Deerthug was talking about his daughter in this thread. I don't think he ever envisioned her "working on the railroad" or growing up to be a boilermaker, roofer or sheetmetal worker. Not that there is anything wrong with these other jobs, but I don't think a lot of fathers ever pictured their daughters working in such trades. I think a guy can get away without going to college if he has good skills in a trade. He can surely make good money in many trades. For females however, I really do think college is VERY important these days. If some think making $40K within 5 years of college graduation is sad, just think what the average female without a college education will be making?? Not a pretty picture, that's for sure.1 point

That is awesome Wooly! Doesn't look like he has changed much besides that G41 point

In theory the flightcontrol wad is supposed to be designed for tubes that are much more open than that. Based on some of the results I've seen you would probably be able to crack the 100 hits in 10" at 40yds benchmark without much trouble, probably with a bit of wiggle room. The real eye popping numbers from those shells typically seem to come from the tighter chokes though like the .562 SumToy or the .555 Indian Creek. With temps in the 60's my SumToy is pretty consistently around 180 hits, at 30° it still throws 130+.1 point

I hinge cut them back in January. The deer fed on them pretty good until the deep snow pushed them off the hill. I plan on doing more hinge cutting when the snow melts down. A good 18" to 24" of snow up there right now. I received 6 apple trees on 4/4 and no where to plant them yet. Snow and frozen ground.1 point
