A woman went into a tatoo parlor to have the faces of Robert Redford & Paul Newman inked onto each side of her inner thighs. When the artist was done, he handed her a mirror to have a look at his handiwork. When she saw the images in the mirror, she was aghast. "I'm not paying you, that doesn't look anything like Paul Newman or Robert Redford!" She exclaimed. "That's because you are seeing the image backwards in the mirror". He answered. "Tell you what, go out into the street & if the 1st person you come to doesn't recognize who they are, you don't owe me a thing." She stormed out into the street where she found a wino laying in the gutter. She stood with her legs straddled over his face. "Who does that look like to you?" She demanded. The wino peered up between her gaping thighs, squinted his eyes & rubbed the stubble on his chin for a moment. "Well, I don't know who those fellas are on either side, but damned if that ain't a perfect likness of Willie Nelson in the middle!"4 points

Well Doc at 73 years young I sure do not hunt as well as I did at 20 years young. But to me it never was how many deer you can take or how many points on a rack. I first started at 10 going with my Dad to hunt camp for the weekend prior to opening day of Monday. Several of the sons who were to young to hunt would be there to help setup the camp. We were shown how to see the deer trails, rubs and scraps. We would also that night hear the tales of hunts of the past. I could not wait to be old enough to have my first tags and be able to go with my Dad and the other members of the hunt club. I was just 17 when I was able to take my first buck, it was a 5 point. I was to get the shot just at dark and only 30 yards away as he walked out of a swamp. The buck ran up the ridge and fell maybe 60 yards only from me. My Dad called to me and we then walked up to the buck and it was my first time to gut a deer as well. There have been many deer taken in my life but that one will always be with me, as the skill I learned from my Dad and the other member of that hunt club. I find as I recall hunts now it is more of the people I hunted with, the weather of the hunt and not so much if game was taken. )Over the years we sure enjoyed getting a deer and making speedies meat and having them in the summer. I now am in my last stages of a hunter, have to many medical issue to hunt in the back woods, have to take a cell phone to call the wife when I get to were I will hunt for the day. I go just 100 yards or less off the road on public hunting ground in North Pharsalia NY. It has 7500 acreas of land that over the last 25 years I have hunted most of the places and have taken deer. I still shoot a few arrows most days when weather permits, I now am down to 54 lb compound bow setup with a d-loop, kisser button, single pin slider site in fiber optic, and a winn release. I use carbon arrows with 2 inch BH vanes and 100 gr muzzy 3 blade BH, that are old style but for me have taken so many deer that I just can not change for what has worked year in and out. If I hunt rifle I use my old 303 British Enfield in 303 cal. I now am just a sitter and do not walk to much and for sure no more tree stands. I deer now becomes 1 in 5 years at best, and I take no does and or young bucks. I tell the young hunter that in hunting you have a life long activity that will give you a great life in the outdoor.3 points

My question is, why doesn't everyone hunt? I cannot see living without doing it. Everyone should be able to, and at least participate to a minimal extent. I can't understand not wanting to at least try it. On the humorous side, this has some truth to it.2 points

I have many reasons like those already cited. One of the major factors is the feeling of independence and self reliance. I grow a vegetable garden for the same reason. I think hunting connects us to our hunter, gatherer roots.2 points

G-Man, some older folks with tired eyes cannot focus on iron sights anymore, even with eye glasses. Scopes help those folks a lot. In their younger days, they may have been expert marksmen with iron sights.1 point

The problem with that is that sometimes that works, and other times you simply get an inmate number and a dandy mug-shot (suitable for framing....lol). The jails are full of people who thought they could "do what they want". To me that's not an acceptable lifestyle. I don't like owning guns that I can't take out and shoot. I don't really want my guns stored in the walls or under the floor boards. I kind of like to take mine out and shoot them once in a while or maybe even hunt with them a bit without being concerned with how far the sound carries and in what direction. However, a slight word of reality. If Hilary wants to run, there is no way that ALL of the NYS electoral votes will go to any one but her during an election. People, this is New York State. If we had God running as a Republican, he would never carry this state. So we can get as excited as we want about another Clinton in the White House, we can work as hard as we want to defeat her. The results for this state have only one way to go. You know that I am always the one trying to rally the troops for loosing causes, and it always rankles me to give up on a cause before the issue even gets going. But in this case, the odds of NYS going Republican are so far against us that we really had better hope that the Republicans can field a candidate that the other states can get behind, because it just ain't happening here. But just to lighten things up a bit here:1 point

I don't care much for anything with the term 'collective' in it. And bargaining with people who rule, or who desperately wish to rule, is not actually bargaining, it's begging. At this point in time you're still free to do that if you so desire, but I've chosen to not participate in that scenario.1 point

Good for her and the family. Glad she made the decision and is on her way to a nice school. Hearing a few stories just like this over this past weekend. Not an easy decision at all. You know I spent two years at St. John's and then went on to Plattsburgh State. No reason why she an't do the same if she is not totally happy there. Like I said Plattsburgh had so much better hunting and fishing available…lol.1 point

So we spent the day at St John's today.... What a beautiful campus! And after talking about both schools for the last 3 hours the decision is........... ST JOHN'S!! She made this decision all on her own after weighing all the pros and cons between the schools. We did not push either way. We laid everything out on the table and she chose. We let her know that we would support whatever decision she made. It came down to the career services department of St John's which has 10x times the amount of internship connections over Cortland; the closeness to NYC and 24/7 on campus security. And she realized she would be giving up $112,000 over four years in scholarships. She realized St John's was the right choice and that it was really a no brainer. This was the first real adult conversation we had with her and her first adult decision. I am so very proud of her and the way she came to her decision. The next step is contacting the St John's athletic dept with the hope of getting her onto the fencing team..... Hmmmm....1 point

As some of you probably would have guessed... I don't own a gun with a scope. I shoot exclusively iron sights or a peep... not to say that I won't ever own one... especially if the eyesight gets bad enough that it becomes the only option to continue hunting. For me I'll just have to accept that a new rifle with irons will be a special order in the future... I realize they just aren't the norm in this new age of making hunting easier... well, some of you might say more efficient, not easier1 point
-
It's pretty much a non-issue for me. Of all the guns that I have, the only one that doesn't have a scope is my Model 94 30-30 Winchester with the top eject. I love scope, and whenever I am costing out a new gun, mounts and scope are all part of the cost. Of course gun manufacturers are not tailoring their gun features after my wants and needs, so I have to assume that my preferences have become the norm. I will say though, by not even having the mounting features for a front sight, you certainly have eliminated the versatility of having iron sights if one has their heart set on that alternative. Why not at least mill in the dovetail so that a front sight could be put on for those that want one?1 point

Let's talk this weekend on it. I figured you might have some ideas and chime in. Don't need anything fancy, but some sort of deterrent and/or video capture would be great. Appreciate it.1 point
