spent the day still hunting on Iroquois wildlife refuge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk16 points

It seems to me that once the animal has been reduced to non-edible carrion, it is no longer a "harvest", but simply a search of antlers. The only salvageable part of the find is the antlers, so the shooter is no longer looking for a deer. ....just the antlers. At that point the antlers become the same as sheds and whoever finds them gets the ownership.8 points

Which is why I tell gun hunters they don't know what they're missing. Bow season is great but tough because harvesting can be very tough. But you get to see deer in the natural environment. Not spooked. I'm also a firm believer that bow hunting makes you a better gun hunter. You're more patient. See the woods differently. But that's just me.5 points

A little off topic, but if your getting ready head out to hunt, and are going to spray down, don't ever grab a can of buck bomb thinking its a can of Nose Jammer scent killer….4 points

Raccoons have a similar bone, and many years ago when I was a young buck, I gave one to my girlfriend's college roommate and told her it was a turkey call. I can still see her blowing on it and wondering why it didn't make any noise. She left school shortly after that and entered a convent. TRUE STORY, except for the third sentence...<<grin>>...3 points

I attest to the sensitivity of the female nose... I learned that quickly when I tried to sneak a smoke or a shot of whiskey on The Mermaid...<<sigh>>...3 points

The deer was found like 3 weeks after being shot... If the story the OP gave us was true and it was 80 yds from where they lost blood chances are it was dead within a 24 hours. The cape would've been LONG gone. The hide starts slipping after a few days. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk2 points

Eh I will wait and wait passed on many deer before taking him. But sure worked hard to get him drawing on my knowledge of the woods I was in and where the other hunters tend to go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I know what didn't work. All scents I bought. Doe estrous and buck lure. Never saw anything from the direction of the scents and sometimes didn't see anything when I used it. Also my combo doe and buck call didn't seem to do anything, except maybe chase a buck away once. I grunted at it and it turned tail and ran.2 points

REAL men drink whiskey straight, or at least on the rocks. It IS permissible to chase it with beer( preferably) or water (if no beer is available). Only gay guys ruin perfectly good whiskey by mixing it with soda pop. This must be where the penis bone swizzle stick originated.2 points

Been looking at the site for awhile and decided it was time to join. Found some pretty good topics and discussions on here un-like some of the other forums I have joined. Look forward to visiting the site often to see what everyone has to say. Good hunting...whatever it may be!2 points

it's the inner bone, not the dong itself. And yes, knowing where it's origin is some pretty primal cave man **** right there. there's a few comments here that seem to think anything penis related is gay. That's just sad really.2 points

I have done several now with Van Dykes skull bleaching kit. It comes with Sodium Carbonate, you mix this with the boiling water and the flesh literally comes right off the bone. I flesh it best I can and then boil for 1 hour total with the Sodium Carbonate. I can literally take a head with nothing done to it and have it totally done in 4 hours. 1 day start to finish including bleaching (let it sit overnight). http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/Skull-Bleaching-Instructions-W377.aspx2 points

for gun hunting yes, and I know that's the subject of this thread. As a bowhunter, lack of pressure is your best friend. It's really funny how different the seasons are.2 points

I would think "possessed" means just that, you are in possession of the means to fire it regardless of where you have it. To the one above who talked about store policy vs law, I don't think you get the point. If you have a 50 cal muzzleloader rifle and supplies and buy a 50 cal muzzleloader pistol you are technically in violation of the law if you do not have it on a permit since you do possess the means to fire it. Whether the authorities find out or not is irrelevant, it needs to be licensed.2 points

I generally skin while still warm. Last one I did was a bit concerning, luckily for me, I had a buddy with me that enjoyed torturing them by popping them. He said something about the sound of them popping soothed his inner hatred towards them or something of that affect. Hey, don't judge! I've dated a couple of whales and they didn't have them, at least not as far as I could tell... " A policeman pulled me over the other night and said Sir, have you been drinking ?" " I said WHY, is there a FAT GIRL in my back seat ? ".....Larry the Cable Guy......2 points

Most people think there is a deer shortage yet they spend every minute they get trying to kill one during deer season, yet there is a coyote overload apparently and very few hunt them... So all of the studies done are wrong and your "studies" of which you have no facts or proof are in some way correct? Makes sense...Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk2 points

Dang , you almost hurt my feelings I'm all for shooting as many as I see. As soon as we get some snow I'll be out there with the caller and #4 buck. I know they impact deer population and any avid turkey hunter will SSS them all spring season long. This was the first spring season in a long time I didn't see one coming in to try and kill a turkey ( me )!2 points

Funny thing..........For quite a few years at my uncles cabin in Naples (on the south side of Hunt Hollow) we would often hear coyotes in groups howling at night. One evening when we had an over load of guys sleeping in the cabin, my buddy and I slept in the barn. Sometime well after midnight a group (who the hell knows how many, may have only been three but sounded like a half dozen) of 'yotes started making music RIGHT OUTSIDE THE BARN! It was scary and unreal at the same time. For all those "howling packs" over the years I've only ever got more than one 'yote on my trail camera a couple times and those were young pups. FWIW, for the most part the past 4-5 years all I've done is 20 second video from my cameras giving ample time for multiple 'yotes to make it to the big screen.2 points

I could be mistaken but this deer looks healthy to me. Except for where coyote(s) already went for the arse as they do2 points

Welcome to our addiction - time outdoors with a little (or alot) of time hunting. Don't sweat it - still have 2 more weeks to go for gun season. Getting a deer your second season is good. I didn't even see a deer my first 2-3 years.2 points

Yes it is legal providing you use the correct shot size. And yes you can get a good spread, especially at the close range turkeys should be shot at.Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk1 point

An FYI Adirondacks are not a national park. It is a New York State forest preserve and is managed by the Adirondack Park Agency a state entity. The Adirondack Park Agency was set up by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Regardless the preserve is protected by New York State laws keeping it "forever wild" making it very difficult for forest management. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I agree that people way overestimate coyote populations, they hear 2 or 3 and swear there are 40 of them, they see coyote tracks on the snow (coyotes travel far and wide), they reach for a reason to blame "dwindling" deer numbers... First off if you feel that way then ask yourself, "Am I doing anything to address the problem?" I coyotes hunt quite a lot in the winter and I have NEVER come across a fellow coyote hunter/trapper. I love coyote hunting and i take every one that gives me the opportunity but i don't begrudge them for existing. Secondly some people seem to HATE coyotes for some unknown reason, is it because they are too smart for you to kill? Is it because they take a few deer a year in order to survive? Are we as hunters in any way, shape or form more entitled to these deer than the animals that depend on the occasional deer for survival? The coyotes are not slaughtering off your deer. In the spring the fawns are certainly vulnerable but after that its rare that a coyote could take down an adult deer in good health. An intense, quick deer rut is the best defense against coyote predation on fawns. Its called "predator swamping." Coyotes will never go away and I'm glad, if you've never tried matching wits with coyotes on their terms then I suggest you try it. If you think deer are cagey you're mistaken. Besides, if coyotes are so overpopulated how hard could it be right? Give it a try... That's my rant for the day. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk1 point

not sure they can put a price on venison as one can't buy it. Nor are they going to pay for your gas your time or put those deer back on the planet1 point

I dont really watch hunting or fishing shows, anymore. But, I will say this. If not for these shows, I may have never become an outdoorsman. When my father was in college, he hunted a time or two, so he says. In his words, he "never cut a hair." He did get me into fishing when I was a kid, but aside from that I had no family whatsoever that hunted or fished. When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I would wake up at 6 in the morning, before anyone else in the house was awake, and I would always watch ESPN outdoors, from beginning to end. It was usually 2-3 hunting shows and 2-3 fishing shows. The fishing bug had already bit me by that age, but those shows really planted the hunting seed in my mind. I begged for a bow every December until I finally got one for my birthday when I was 12, I think. That was my first season bow hunting and the rest is history. For all you stonethrowers, yes I hunted alone from the age of 12, yes that is illegal, I know. My old man took me and a friend to our hunters safety course, we got our licenses and got our tags. Legality never crossed my mind at the time. I just went out in the woods behind the house and hunted and loved every minute of it.1 point

I hear this stuff every year, and I knew that crossbows and the youth season would be blamed. I will wait to see the harvest numbers for the youth season, but I would go so far as to guarantee that they are pretty low, so you are barking up the wrong tree. Blaming crossbows is just another attack on archery hunting, and I dont get it. Crossbows are fairly easy to use, so get one, learn the woodsmanship skills to get close enough and join the party. Nusiance permits, you can see the numbers of those harvests each year, and they are insignificant. DMPs, well, NY wants to lower deer numbers, and they can only manage to a certain point. After that, its up to you. If you believe deer numbers are low in your specific area, lay off the does for a couple of years. Just because you have tags, doesnt meant you have to fill them. Coyotes? Go trap/hunt them. I have to agree with FSW on a couple of things, 1 buck a year, and mandatory reporting (dont need to mail them back, just go online and report them as unused) of ALL tags before you can purchase your lisence for the next season. BTW, deer patterns can change on a property. We see it all the time on our farms. Oh, and you mentioned trail cams, maybe you need to consider the additional pressure you are putting on the deer with them. Everytime you check them, its pressure. If they are not set up high, or are not true black flash, they will spook deer and add pressure to them. You have to be careful about trail cam use.1 point

Boy am I glad it's not just me!!! Racking my brain trying to figure out what happened in my area to have none to little deer sightings during the SZ regular season. Seems to be more widespread across the state to be any isolated issue. Had been getting lots of photos of a many deer all summer long. Lot of sightings of does, fawns and smaller bucks during SZ bow season. Once we got closer to Halloween, the bigger, mature bucks were moving around. Mostly still at night, but some during daylight hours. Best of my knowledge, the bulk of the chasing & breeding took place the week before SZ regular season opened. Since then I haven't seen a single deer. Not a lot of hunting pressure around where I hunt either! Had my trail cams out latter than usual this year, until about Thanksgiving. Majority of photos since ~11/15 were during the night, mainly 10PM thru 4AM. Still a lot of fresh tracks around also! They're still around, so it must be something about their behavior that's changed them to become more nocturnal. I tried to blame it on the increased number of coyotes I've gotten photos of this year. Certainly didn't disrupt the deer's behavior during the summer & early fall time frame. Can't wait to see the DEC's harvest report for this year's deer season!!! This has been a single event, so attributing it to hunting pressure by bow hunter, new Xbow season or Youth hunts doesn't seem reasonable, at all!! I've written it off as a weird year!?! Zombies...?1 point
