  3. Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag What a PITA to get person to person sales transfer however. There's only but a couple of places in WNY that'll even do it. Getting the ball rolling after the holiday weekend. Current owner has had since late '70's and used twice deer hunting and some competition shooting. Had some trigger work done, boy is it sweet . Put on Pachmayr grips too. Gun is in pristine condition. Any deer hunting ammo suggestions ? I did a little research and saw Buffalo Bore Deer Grenade +P got great reviews. Have all summer to practice with her. Now I have to find a holster for it. Optics ? yay or nay ?

  5. How did they get here? No idea but I saw at least 8 or 9 of them (2 adults, the rest were pups) in a 100 yard stretch. People were walking their dogs and children were playing less than 10 yards of them and most didn't even notice them.

  6. I'm not gonna beat you up over it but a xbow is just a much archery equipment and the modern compounds...so unless you hunt and shoot strictly trad you are no closer to the true origins of archery than I will be with my xbow Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

  7. No such thing as a golden rattlesnake...Some reporter who don't know **** is referring to a yellow phase timber rattler as a " golden " as if it is a distinct species.. Three venomous snakes in NY....The copperhead, the missauga rattler and the timber rattler in it's several color phases..

  8. Probably an escapee, or maybe a cross between wild and heritage breeds. Given how light it is, I doubt the cross-breed guess. The all white birds are so misproportioned that they cannot normally breed without human help. A big-breasted hen would probably never successfully breed and raise young in the wild. Heritage breeds could do so. My brother raises heritage turkeys. He has had wild birds come into the yard looking for action. A cross-bred bird hatched on a farm would end up in the soup pot with all the others. Not so long ago someone posted a photo of a Bourbon Red breed he shot thinking it was a wierd wild bird..

  9. No luck today, for the record if your going for gobbler id steer clear of baxtertown wma.. Didn't get a call back all morning (and I got pretty good at calling), and the brush is a little thick. Half the forest is covered in an inch or so of water .. Not the best for turkey though someone who lived across from where we parked said she sees them sometimes in the morning . Probably going to try out taconic multiple use tomorrow .. Everyone around here seems to swear by it. Gonna fish at the state park today though will keep you guys updated

  14. How are those gardens coming along...this hot sunny weather is a killer...love it though...I have been able to plant 54 tomato plants, 24 swt. peppers 7 hot. The new strawberry plants look awesome. None of the seed is up but did plant zucchini /cuke plants added some more spinach plants to what is already up basil, cilantro, sage plants...Planted 2 Goji berry bushes in a food plot and a apple sucker. I have the hills done to pop in more summer and winter squash ...just too hot to plant the brassica plants...I may plant some now (Brussel sprouts) and a few broccoli then pot up the others for a later planting...heat ...heat will cause them to bolt and not produce good firm heads. Melons need to find a spot ....

  17. daughter and I had this discussion on way home today. What's everyone's thoughts on birds avoiding fields as those dark feathers will suck in the heat ? They need to keep cool like any other animal. Staying in darker depths of hardwoods and near water sources ? Do you think they'll be hanging out by Six Flags/Darien Lake water park ? ???? My neighbors are headed there now so I'll have them scout for us ????

  18. Excuse my total ignorance but are these escaped domestic birds ? Only 2 houses in vicinity and doesn't appear either are farms. These were 2 birds I saw in field other day. Actually Jake not long beard as thought. He wouldn't stop yelping until daughter says " can I putt him ?" He stuck his head up in the usual " aw crap look ".

  20. I knew two handsome guys that missed last week after working the birds for over two hours, they left the field feeling deflated. Well the one guy pulled his shot after the first guy missed because he felt bad. They were half a heartbeat away from taking some pigeons afterwards, but the anger subsided. Funny thing was the one guy remembered he had a rangefinder after Turkeyfeathers mentioned it might be a good idea in a PM. I guess he should have used it, at least the two hunters still have their good looks.

  24. I heard about another guy who had a similar but not quite so traumatic experience.. He was hunting with a very dear old friend who has tagged out and had located a gobbler... They sat until nearly 8:00 AM and heard NADA, when finally a gobbler answered up... They set up and the dear old friend was doing the calling, all our hero had to do was sit there and shoot the damn turkey.. It was a textbook call up...The gobbler stepped out at 30 yards and posed... BANG !! The shot went over the gobbler's head and the bird flushed totally unscathed, at least leaving no indication of being hit...Perhaps a result of holding on the HEAD rather than lower on the neck with the new tight patterning Longbeard XRs.. The dear old friend who had located the bird and had done the calling, commented, " How the hell do you drop those ducks and geese and crows flying at 50 MPH, and miss that great big gobbler standing there flatfooted at 30 yards ??" Actually I consider quite a feat..One poster on here not too long ago stated that it was pretty HARD to miss a turkey...

  25. I hate to mention this to those of you who have been hunting turkeys quite a bit this season with little or no success. As I mentioned yesterday I am done hunting this spring due to work , parties, etc. so my kid brother asks me where he should hunt turkey with his son. I tell him to go near one of my deer stands in the woods near a big hay field @ 100 acres. He hasn't turkey hunted at all this spring. So he wakes up at 0800 heads out to the spot, sets up and gives a call , gets an answer from this bird that I've seen in the field a couple of times , answers again my brother stops calling and the bird walks right into him and he shoots it at 25 yds. Luck is what u make it but I thought I would share this one . I'll send a pic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. LOL dbHunterNY. Oh, we had our share of 'sparring' for years about the dreaded "black guns". I wore her down enough to where she said "If you can pay cash for it, then get it.". So, the ATV went up for sale. LOL She's done some shooting before we met, mainly a few hand guns. But, I would guess as she doesn't remember, maybe 10 rounds. After I explained how the safety, charging handle, and mag button worked she was good to go. I did the initial sight in at 25 yds, then I put a few down range at 50 and made a couple tweaks. Put up two fresh targets, one for her and one for me and we just took turns. She kept her target as a souvenir. Might take a pic and post it later. Total cost for gas, ammo, and lunch was only around $25.

  30. The guy (Ken Wallace) who keeps finding these rattlers in the park is a friend of mine. He's also an incredible flintnapper, shed hunter, and very knowledgeable guy about many things in nature. No surprise to me at least that this is his second rattler find in as many years here! He has a you tube channel that documents a lot of his time spent in the park and many of his encounters, along with some great knapping, and I believe some caching videos. I would love to have an opportunity to shoot one of those suckers with the camera just once!

  31. That's what I thought. I been looking up "Golden Rattler" and found nothing to state they are an actual species. Oh, and just for a giggle, the massasauga is also known as the "pygmy" rattler. LOL.

  32. I dug that old pine stump out last year , i broke 2 axes and it took me a week everyday after work of digging and chopping . I just don't know if i can come up with that much free time right now. I could probably free up one day and just get it done or stretch it out all summer.

  35. 1 acre...Doing the whole acre?...What equipment is available? How much time you willing to invest? How much $$$ do you have to invest as well? Now depending on those answers, you Need to kill weeds...but spraying doesn't do that...it helps with the turning of ground and perennial weed roots, that's it. Years and years of dormant weed seed is just waiting to get turned to the surface and grow like mad...second you need a soil test to check at least the PH...then lime accordingly. Now Lime takes time to work well. It HAS to be turned into the soil...acidic soils do not produce good crops ,other than weeds. 6 Mos is the time it takes for the lime to really do it's thing ...not that it won't help in some plot seeds but things take time. ...So you can decide to work the acre all summer killing weeds then plant a good weed suppressing crop like winter wheat(WW), Hog radish(HR) winter rye(WR) or turnips. Then attempt a early spring clover, nothing fancy at first...remember there is still weed seed there. The other option is do your initial work and lay down a heavy planting of buck wheat ...It is a short season grower, it will handle acidic soils while lime is working and it has weed suppressing properties ...deer love it. Now cut and incorporate it into the soil before it seeds and go with the above in the fall or try a fall clover a wht /red mix. Once you get the ground under control then think about the fancy mixes like White tail institute. Personally I'd divide the acre into half annual /half perennial so you can rotate the planting to avoid bug problems, bacterial and fungal issues and nutrient deficiencies. After all that ...then consider planting some mast trees in the middle of the plot...Apples, Chestnuts, mulberries what ever you think wil draw with not a ton of care needed and fast production.

  40. Yup thats why i dont play some;s Data game on here. Its a fact that there are a pile of hunters who do not report their kill and surly do not report their kills on the kids and wives tags. Its all a guessing game for them and has been for years. Just like Letchworth were you have to send in your kill results or you dont come back. I am sure some of those numbers are off a bit. But not alot.

  48. Selective but not recoil operated. "Mechanical selective". Only drawback with that was the fact that once the safety was off, the selected barrel could not be changed W/O putting the safety in the "on" position. The plus side was that, unlike recoil operated selective triggers, if a dud failed to go off, the other barrel was ready. The DeHanns were the mechanical twin to the Cz doubles being marketed today albeit at a higher level of finish with many custom options not available W/the Cz offerings. Dehann shotguns were imported way before Cz slid in & took the market away from them. Both were made by HUGLU in Turkey, perhaps the finest arms making COOP in Turkey. I'm not in the habit of naming guns, but I called that sweet little number Caterine Zeta Jones.
