  2. Saw a couple of Doe last night then about 5:00 a bear walks in. Not the one with Mange. This was I guess 2 -3 year old about 200 lbs. Real good looking bear. He wondered around at 50 yards and never came closer. He drifted off after 5 minutes. Hope to get a shot at him. Just real good looking and I'm guessing being young the meat would be more tender?

  3. I agree with Charlie and Wolc when it comes to tough meat the pressure cookers will do wonders, I have a counter top electric one and cook tough game meat cuts in it all the time, the meat falls off the bone and the cook time is short. The good old slow cooking crockpot will work great too if not in a hurry. Al

  5. If you have taken a Hunter Education, Bowhunter Education, or Trapper Education certification course but still want some hands-on training, you are in luck! DEC's Hunter Education Program now offers Next Step Courses Firearms (rifle or shotgun) – learn about different types of rifles or shotguns, hands-on instruction in safe firearm handling and safe zones of fire, loading and unloading rifles or shotguns, shooting positions and stances, and target practice on the range; Crossbow and Archery – learn about the parts of a crossbow or bow, how to hunt safely with a crossbow or bow, how to shoot a crossbow or bow, and target practice on the range; and Trapping (water trapping or land trapping) and fur handling courses – learn safe, efficient, and humane trapping techniques for various furbearers trapped in the water (e.g., beaver, muskrat) or on land (e.g., coyote, raccoon), how to process furs and the equipment needed to do so, and how to use the furs including preparing them for market. All Next Step courses are free, but registration is required. Supplies and equipment are provided by course instructors so students do not have to bring their own. Those interested will need their hunter or trapper education certificate number to register. The minimum age to take a Next Step course is 12. There is no certification offered with these courses. To learn what Next Step courses are being offered, and to register, visit DEC’s website. Since these are new courses, availability may be limited. Hunters and trappers are encouraged to check back often as courses will continuously be added.

  6. That should have been long enough to get it past rigor mortis, unless it was more than 3-1/2 years old. At this point, I’d thaw it all out, chunk it up, and can it, using a pressure cooker. My buddy did that with an 8-1/2 year old moose a few years ago. It also was as tough as shoe leather, until he did that, which made it tender and delicious. I suspect that even the grind will be tough, if you go that route. I’ve been eating venison for 50 years and never had one that was tough, except for a few tenderloins that I ate too quick, from older deer. I did hear of a couple of friends having that trouble though. One was obviously a very old buck (6-1/2 plus), and the other was a 2-1/2 year old buck that survived 8 days after a bad bow shot. If vas very highly stressed carrying an arrow around for a week.

  12. On a side note, my big 8 is back on one of the leases, at least he was this morning. We've got a lot of good bucks this year but he's tied for number one to me. I'll attach a motivational pic for anyone interested! Sent from my motorola edge (2022) using Tapatalk

  15. I wish I could. I’ve asked for that ability a few times and haven’t gotten an answer. I would really like to bring this site back to life again. We will see. I’m trying.

  16. It it abundantly clear there is bad blood between you and some other people. The reason why escapes me, but really does not seem healthy for anyone, or either site. I wish you guys could sign some sort of gentleman's peace treaty and move on, rather than the continued sniping back and forth. I think it only drags everyone down. I would also suggest anyone here on this site avoid being drawn into back and forth with people who seem to enjoy this type of crap. Spring and Summer are short in this neck of the woods, and the world is scary and depressing enough without all this drama. I hope everyone can take the time to think about the direction this country is headed and prepare for the future, and recognize the petty problems on this social media pales in comparison to the real world issues we face. Personally, the massive gardening and homesteading project me and the wife are engaged in keeps me from posting much, but does not reflect me being inactive here for any other reason. And, in any down time I still enjoy coming here so I'm glad it is still up. I hope because I choose to do so does not put me in the crosshairs of others who have ill will for this site and people who did not jump ship. If it does though, I guess there is nothing I can do or say to change it, so I won't worry about it. In short; I'm thankful for the site owner keeping this place up and going, or who ever fixed things, and I wish everyone from what ever site you call home, peace, safety, and good health. Enjoy the Summer! NYH

  17. It is all about habitat, food and cover, the better those three things are the better your wildlife populations will be. I had a decent wildlife population until the Gypsy Moth Blight, the worms ate everything and left a sterile landscape with no cover and no food. Consequently I killed very few game animals in the hope that their numbers will recover as the habitat improves. I am primarily a small game hunter so for me it stinks big time. Al
