  3. After seeing plenty of doe and non shooter bucks on stand over opening weekend we spotted a buck bedded down in a field on DEP property about 150 yards off a road while heading to town. We glassed it and saw it was a legal shooter. Sun was in it's face and wind was in my face, so it was the perfect time to make a stalk. I donned my blaze orange, slipped out of the truck and chambered a round. Got to within 50 yards of it by crawling through tall grass until I ran into a ditch. I parted the grass with my right foot and popped it in the neck, as it was the only area of it that I had a clear shot of. After the shot an unseen doe bolted away. I thought it was the .01% indigenous genes that allowed me to stalk within 50 yards, but it was actually a hot doe. After we brought it back to the farm to process a ferocious cow tried to take the buck away, but I wasn't having any of that and it quickly backed away after staring down the barrel of the 500 S&W ! 4. We have an excellent thread here on deer anatomy that is very instructive on this subject. There are a lot of illustrations and actual photographs of where the vitals are on a deer. The page is at: https://huntingny.com/forums/topic/6770-deer-anatomy/#comments I look at the size of the neck bone vs. the size of the heart-lung area, and the choice for making a more guaranteed lethal kill is obvious to me.

  5. Yes, there are way too many people who fail to understand that marksmanship is a large part of hunting. And that is a real shame. There are so many shots that are taken that never should be taken. Shot selection is another big part of hunting. There are also a lot of hunters that think they can do much more than it turns out they can do when it comes to proper shot selection and placement. I know, it takes super-human will power to pass a marginal shot at some huge buck. I don't want to sound "preachy" here, but sometimes it is good to at least think about some of these things before we pull that trigger or loose that arrow.

  6. While things have been pretty quite in this area it seems a number of guys and gals are knocking down some BIG bucks across the state. While there has been a lot of nice racks what has really caught my attention is the size of some of these deer. Thought I would share some for you to enjoy.

  7. I have a Winchester 30-30 AR It’s all drilled for a scope . I would like to use it for deer out to 50 yards on one wooded spot I have . The iron sights and my 65 yr old eyes don’t work good together Weaver makes the bases and I can get a Leupold 1.5 -4 x20 scope pretty cheap

  9. 94s were top eject until their last run, when angle eject came out..that is, under the long time ownership before they went bellyup in the nineties. Before then, you could use an off set scope mount, but they were alwasy very clumsy. I had never heard of the AR...is that the angle eject? My own thoughts...I dearly love my 94s (I have owned four), but to me ...a scope kills its easy natural handling. I have a Williams aperture on mine, and it is amazing the improvement in accuracy. They used to be all pre drilled for them.

  10. Sounds like a winning combination to me, I do not have any Winchester 94s but I do have lever action Marlins and a Savage that wear low powered straight 2 1/2s, 1x4 and 1x5s. They have all worked out great for any hunting I did with them. Al

  12. That is one of the big problems with thinking that hunting forums represent the thinking of ALL hunters and gun owners. Get outside of the forum and start talking to hunters and other gun owners. I think you will be surprised how many of them do not vote. Also, as someone already pointed out, even some of the forum members vote Democrat. To me that is unbelievable, but I have seen it here for myself. No, if we could ever get all the hunters and other gun owners to vote pro-gun, we would not even be discussing the NY ammo regulations. I spend a lot of effort preaching about the need to vote to anyone who will listen, but the way things are today even something as simple as voting seems to be too much of an imposition. It is a real shame.

  13. Lots of snow in my area of 7m. Deer moved a lot over night judging from the tracks. And I screwed my self up this morning second guessed getting in my usual stand to go higher in the hill. Only to watch a total of 8 deer, including a really decent buck, walk right past my stand I passed up. Lol. They actually then walked past my bow stand as well! Oh well! At least I’m seeing them again.

  15. A trail camera is a tool. Some see a need for them, some don't. If we didn't have cell service to use the cell cameras I wouldn't use them. I never liked having to visit the cam's to pull cards and change batteries. We have a couple of solar cell cameras set up on trails leading to stands and a couple at property access points to keep tabs on trespassers who swear they don't trespass. More than 90% of the bucks we see on the cams are never seen or taken and that's info that I would never know without using them. I set up cell cams on bait piles for coyote hunting and that helps me tremendously in eliminating them. SJC

  16. I noticed a growing trend in society, people refuse to take blame for their own actions. They will blame it on every other excuse, except the real one. Everybody screws up, accept it and take responsibility for what is done. Learn by ones mistakes.

  17. I have noticed this too, missing shots and poor hits are most times the result of poor marksmanship. I know there are many hunters that do not even check the zero of their firearms before season. To be good at anything requires practice and "PLENTY" of it. I know ammo these days is very expensive, but one can get all the practice they need with rimfire firearms and even good quality airguns and become good shots. Also a well hit Deer can travel unbelievable distance, too many throw in the towel early. Each animal is a story of it's own and you can expect the unexpected some days. I shot a spikehorn buck a few years ago with a 45-70 firing a 350 grain bullet at 25 yards, I had to track him through thick woods for a good 200 yards before finding him. The bullet placement was perfect and the bullet went through his heart., I had a hunting partner with me tracking and he could not believe the Deer went that far. A couple of years ago I shot a duplicate spikehorn buck at close to 100 yards distance with a 357 mag with almost the exact bullet placement, he only went 25 yards and went down. So here you have one Deer shot with a cartridge that can probably kill elephants tearing off to parts unknown and one shot with a cartridge that many would consider marginal that piles up almost immediately, go figure! For me one thing is for sure, if the crosshairs are where they are supposed to be when my gun fires I know I have a dead Deer and it is up to me to find it. Al

  18. No hunting for me until tomorrow afternoon. Road trip to see family in western part of state. It figures every time I plan this stuff the weather makes me wish I was staying put. Hunting today would have been interesting. I hope this sticks around!

  20. That is exactly the way I do it, except I don't quarter them. I think quartering them may be a more neat way to finish them off, so I guess I will start doing that. By the way, just a word of safety now that deer season is open. Don't forget the blaze orange outer clothing. I don't think it is required for us small game hunters, but safety is always more than just what the state mandates.

  29. Took a button buck last night. My mistake thought it was a small does Mom. Texted my brother for the quad and three racked bucks were together coming through the woods. Crazy stuff.

  31. So today my neighbor shot a real nice buck. I got a picture of it, what do you think it weighed and inside spread?
    1 point
  32. I would have guessed 18" inside but never guess on weight because I am usually wrong which is why I bought a scale. All I know is some of the ones I have dragged out felt like 400 lbs. and they didn't weigh half of that

  33. After checking the zero of this little Squirrel rifle I found it is pretty much right on the money, I just have to remember it is not the tack driver my dedicated Squirrel guns are and keep my shots short. So a little redemption yesterday, took a Squirrel with her at around 25 yards, old Davy would have been proud. Al
