  1. Just got back from picking up our potato-cheese pierogi and our smoked kielbasa from Pulaski Meat Market in Utica. Will also have succotash. Our traditional Christmas dinner. Wife will probably have some Expresso Therapy ice cream from Stewarts, which she loves. I will probably have a Sierra Nevada Torpedo or a Southern Tier 2X IPA. Coffee all day.
  2. good hanging in there. Congrads!!!
  3. Well, I guess this tale can now be told, as it is about 16 years ago. Up North, a lot of the guys go "into camp" for a couple of weeks at a time (sometimes all of November). Wives are sort of used to it, especially if they come from a hunting family. There was a no-hunting guy who sort of had a milk run. He would go from one house to another (different days), and "comfort" the hunting widows. I figured it out after a lady made a off-hand comment to another lady that I overheard. I mentioned it and he "fessed up". Apparently this had been going on for a number of years. Some were pretty good looking. Don't know how long it continued as I left the area about then. Same area had a bar that would have a bunch of male "exotic dancers" (Chippendales) appear on a Saturday night. Always had a big crowd of "huntin' widders. I was going with a woman from that area at that time, or I would have stopped by.
  4. I make lists. I go through my clothes and gear and see what needs to be replaced/repaired/added to. Put on list any thing that needs to be done to guns. What I am going to build/modify/maintain on my stands. This usually occurs the week after christmas. I also look at last years list and add items I did not get done last year. Will be a busy year because a trip to Wyoming is planned in Sept.
  5. hoping you recover soon. At least deer season is essentially done. Ditto what suburbanfarmer said about the oximeter.
  6. my fisher story, as related to me by my FIL. One weekend in the northern zone, My wife and I could not go on Saturday, so my FIL and his friend, Bud went. Guy wasn't too tall but he sure was fat. Reminded me of a beach ball in profile. My FIL sent him to a stand that I had constructed for my wife. I had taken a rock pile and hollowed it out, making a seat inside and it was high enough to keep the wind off of her. Anyway the buddy got inside and waited. My FIL saw a fisher go past him, doing one of those loping gaits. He said to himself that he hoped that Bud would get to see it. A few minutes later he heard screaming, rocks clattering and here comes the fisher streaking along his backtrack. He goes down to see Bud and he gives him his somewhat rattled story. Seems the fisher was headed generally towards the rockpile, and Bud then lost sight of it until it jumped into the rock seat with him. Both scrambled away and neither were hurt. I wish I had been there to witness this.
  7. When I unload my muzzleloader to clean and/or at the end of the season, the 2 Pyrodex pellets fall out after I remove the breechplug. They often have some small amount of "chipping" on the top of the pellets, but they are not crushed. And I seat them as firmly as I can.
  8. Great gun!!!!! In alaska, I believe some of the guides get rid of the safety and just use the half-cock. Are you going to do that??
  9. we used a similar one, but with a plain handle
  10. mostly unnamed. A few are named. Nut Hut #1 Nut hut #2 (both back up to a 4 lane road ROW) Shootin' House triple pine stand triple spruce stand a area we used to hunt had a big rock we used for a watch. The rock has a fissure, and whenever we stood there we put a penny in the fissure. Was called the penny rock.
  11. Otto-I've always let them dry and shrink up to "air-dry" state and then nail the other side down. Once they are at air dry, the amount of swelling with fluctuation in humidity is minimal. I've built several and currently own a house and a 12 by 24 barn that are board and batten. Reduces the amount of air infiltration. But I've seen them left loose also.
  12. have you tried pulling some and cutting/smashing them. this worked for us when they were just ignoring them.
  13. very nice. Two thoughts: Are the batten strips nailed to just one side? If so you will need to nail the other side down once the softwood boards have dried (shrunk). Also, if the floor and joists are not pressure treated, it will last a lot longer if you can raise it off of the ground by a foot, for better air circulation.
  14. I have right next to my house a combination .22/crossbow/shotgun patterning range. I use the .22 for all year practice. I have one of my 10/22's set up with a lengthened stock, cheekpiece, high scope mounts and a barrel weight. Replicates my main deer gun, a BAR and handles/shoots the same. close to the characteristics of my other deer guns. Have a 2 and 1/2 inch dinger at 20 yards, which is equivalent of a 10 inch kill zone at 80 yards. Cheap practice. Used to have a inside pellet gun range that worked well also. I noted more than usual shooting preseason, although a lot of the shooting seemed to be handgun and AR type rifles by the sound and length of shot strings.
  15. I once still hunted a whole day. Had a great time. Got back to the truck and unloaded the gun. Except there were no shells in it. Duh!!!!
  16. three things come to mind: We had a guy that had a big buck sneak right behind him. For our gag xmas party we made him a mirror that attached to his gun with mirrors. Also had a mirror with a magnetic base for a abandonded RR track. I would lay in between the tracks and would be able to see deer crossing behind me. Never managed to get a shot off although I saw some. Third: I have a big elevated stand that I have contemplated putting a mirror out the side so I can see the brushy fields behind me.
  17. just crack the windows, or partially open. Then the dark clothing, hat and facemask. I have black "lace" over a couple of mine with small holes cut through them to allow gun barrell.
  18. Always the most interesting post on this board. Have a safe trip to/in/from Florida
  19. and also keeps any "clang" noises from happening.
  20. I have some with flip over bars. I have put foam pipe insulation on them, raises them slightly. Works for me, but i am only 5' 8".
  21. nice job. On our F&G range, I wanted some soft bags to leave outside. Got some I.V. bags, cut off the outlet till I could fill it with sand, put in a wooden plug with a little silicone sealent. Figured they would last a couple of years. They've been there about 10 years and they still are very useable.
  22. I believe that all ECO's are under mileage and overtime restrictions currently. Supposedly that was going to include the opening day of Southern zone, unles someone in administration got there head out of their hiney. Hope you catch the guy(s).
  23. you've still got that restriction on hunting with a semi-automatic firearm that has a total capacity of more than 6 shells between the magazine and chamber combined.
  24. johnplav had the magic word in his response. That is "fresh". Venison (and other liver) is great fresh (like the same day), o.k. the next day, and so-so on the third day. Makes great dog food after that. My wife makes venison liver "jerky" for the dogs is it does not get quickly cooked or if it has liver flukes. We have a lot of flukes in Boonville area.
