I purchased Hornady Custom Lite .308 loads for my fourteen year old twins' Savage 11/111s. Both got deer this past Sunday. Both shots were about 75 yards. One deer dropped straight down, the other ran about 10 yards before falling dead.

You didn't ask for opinions, you asked for the law. The shooter is supposed to use his own tags, or DMP tags that have been previously signed over to him. That is the law. But as someone mentioned, if you're in the middle of the woods and no one is around...

The gas price drop has nothing to do with our election season. Crude is down more than $15 a barrel in the last month or so (around $85 a barrel now). That price is set by the global market. And I paid 2.97 for my gas (in NJ) on the way upstate over the weekend.

I planned a Sunday and Monday hunt on public land for my sons, and we didn't even need to stay until Monday! The doe was shot around 10 AM, the buck, about 5:30 PM. Couldn't have asked for a much better first hunt with my boys.

I am taking my sons out Sunday and Monday.

Four (or is it five now?) episodes on the DVR. Been to busy to watch them, but I sure am looking forward to it.

Hope it stays that way. I'm heading up to Mongaup Valley on Saturday evening for a Sunday, and possibly Monday, hunt.

I'm not getting out until Sunday, but good luck to everyone who's out earlier. -
That's great, if you want to be a top echelon archer. If I was making my living shooting arrows into targets, that is what I would do too. But I would hope you would agree that you can consistently and efficiently down deer without being able to shoot a 300/30.

I have brand new UA 4.0 that I will be taking out into the field for the first time this year. I previously had 3.0 and 2.0. Honestly, I got the UA 4.0 as a gift or I would never have bought it, not that I think it won't do the job, but I wanted to upgrade to merino wool.

Not I.

I have a very limited amount of time that I can hunt, so any day I can get away is an all-day-sit. My first two will be 10/4 and 10/5. The next weekend is the youth weekend, so the 12th and 13th will be all about trying to get my sons their first deer. After that, I'll try to get out once more before bow season ends, but it's not guaranteed.

If you're going out alone, have the tools and the knowledge to know what to do *after* the shot.

The baiting issue aside, that is some of the most pompous, uninformed bullsh*t I've ever read on this site. And that's saying a lot. I'm from the city, I know many, many, hunters from the city. Everyone I know eats the deer they kill, with one exception, who donates his venison to a food bank. My either-sex archery tag almost always goes on a doe, because putting meat in my freezer is what matters most to me, so the first good size deer that passes my stand gets the arrow. Saying people from downstate are only in it for the horns (yeah, giant NY racks, hah!), is just ignorant. But if you want to play the generalization game, I'm sure I could come up with some blanket upstate hick comments to post here.

Last month, I finally had a chance to pick up my Euro mount. Nothing fancy, but I like the finished product. Not sure if I'll just hang it as is or put in on a plaque yet.
-
Have you tried going back to the old release to see if you are shooting like normal?
-
I would a proshop with a good reputation near you and see what they say. It might need a good tuning or even new strings if you have never had them replaced before.

What have you done this year to prepare for the 2014 hunting season?
Sogaard replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
I'm using a new bow for the first time in almost a decade, so I'm practicing whenever I can. I've also always used a climber, but this year I put up a 2 man ladder stand on my favorite tree so I could take my sons up with me.- 16 replies

I used a ~2005 Parker Frontier bow up until this year. I now have an awesome Elite Energy 32, and I doubt I will be changing it anytime soon.

Also, for everyone jumping down his throat for wanting to practice shooting at 60 yards, not only is it fun, but on some adjustable sights, it is necessary to establish your proper sight tape.

As mentioned earlier, Willowbrook Park in SI has a public outdoor range that I know for certain you can shoot up to 60 yards at. It is free, BYOT, and open from 9 to dusk (people can use the space as a dog run from 7 to 9AM). And no crossbows allowed. There is also a carousel, a bbq area and a little lake that has a lot of wildlife in and around it, in case you want to bring the family with you.

My arrows came fletched with 2 red, one yellow. As I need to re-fletch them, I've been putting on black and blaze orange because I like the look.
