The land and area usually dictate what I can do. In the Southern zone I will stalk most land until I am familiar with the area. Then I will sit in a spot for most the time, no action I will move after a few hours. I like to be still for the last and first light and noon. Northern Zone I like to explore much more but once I find a area with good sign I slow down. Rain and wet days I tend to move more than dry no wind days. No blind or stands unless space is limited or I am on a farm.

We have no cell service. We use radios and only turn them on when a shot is fired or at the end of the day when a member arrives late. They have ear buts you can keep by your ear, not in it so you can still hear the critters. The radio beeps can be turned off so only the person speaking is heard. Good luck and be safe.

I can never seem to find a good area with oaks in it, but those beechnuts are da bomb! ADK LI is another story, we have more oaks than an oak farm. Can not wait to get out and see what is being eaten, once the season opens.

Going to purchase a really good pair of binoculars. Always looking at new clothes.

In the back pack. I wear it if I am south of 90 or dragging out a deer or on a drive.

Rocky makes some good boots. I would go to a local store and try some on. Nice to compare to others in the store. Boots I like to try on due to application and use.

Figures this topic has so many funny posts. I used all my likes again so I can't use them here lol. Funny how that slow down in the woods is something I cherish so much yet when the antler shine comes off a nice rack and my heart starts pumping I seem to speed everything up as time seems to stand still and every moment is imbedded in my thoughts. Hard for non-hunters to understand this aspect of heightened alertness and awareness of your environment and self. Ironic how I feel hunting brings me closer to our maker and a general understanding of life. Something the PETA type people will never comprehend as we are just "killers" in their eyes.

At 20 yards your bullet is still rising so I would aim a little high. 2 inches or slightly less should keep the bullet relatively close to where you want the shot.

Take the farmers advice, he is their all the time and knows what he is talking about.

Very cool! Always love seeing good pics. Love the fawn, very nice. Some promising looking young bucks, bet a bigger one will come around to breed that doe again, nice! Thanks for sharing!

50 yards because I have never had a shot "in the woods" over 100 yards. If you have the opportunity to shoot longer distances sight in at 100 and know where to aim from 5 ft out to as far as you can comfortably shoot regardless of what yardage you are zeroed in at. You can set the gun at any distance IF you know where your bullet will hit at other distances. EX: Sight in at 50 yards with a 308 and you will have to aim almost 3 inches high at 5 ft and at about 270 yards you are zeroed in again with 180 yards the peak at about 3 inches higher depending on grain and powder. I thought I knew my trajectory until I missed a buck at 5 ft, one mistake I hope to never make again. To say I was upset would be an understatement.

The zebra herd is getting larger. I always wondered why their were so many of them. Close enough to a deer I guess, just hope I am quicker than the lions or my other zebra friends. lol

An Evening with Charles Alsheimer
NFA-ADK replied to TrapperJohn's topic in NY Hunting Calendar / Events
It is a far drive for me, I do not know of any others willing to make this journey. The other issue is if I see the wonderful western NY lands I might never want to come back to LI!!! Especially if I see some of those beautiful deer our members have been posting! My luck I would set up the trip and run one over, lol. One day I will get to one of his seminars. -
Not yet.

Good point! I like to reread it every year just to see if anything changed. -
