  1. Welcome aboard! I have to agree with Grampy, the best thing to do is check out some land online, check out the topo and satellite maps then go check it out. Try to get in early, before first light (After you are familiar with the area.) Get a GPS! They are great for navigation and marking spots on the map. Use a compass and good maps and know how to use them. Know the laws for your area, some spots are bow only! Your local DEC should have great information for you, don't be afraid to call them and ask for some help in this respect. This is the link to the DEC mapping page, great info! http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45478.html Good luck, wishing you success this year!
  2. Downpour is a bit much for the bow, gun the only thing that takes me out of the woods is really warm weather. Bow I wont hunt high winds or downpours or really warm weather, light rain or drizzle and I am hunting. Otherwise if it's enough to wash the blood away in 5 min I would rather not take a shot but I will more than likely stay in the woods as long as it does not downpour.
  3. This is a muffled version of my fawn distress call, (I cover my mouth to make is sound lower.) it is really more of a location call but the fawn is stressed and wants some milk so they will keep calling, they do not know they are suppose to be quiet! You can do it as often as you want but I find it works great early morning when doe are on their feet especially early season. I have called in many doe this way (I use them as bait for the bucks.). I usually do not call more than once an hour and usually less than 5 times a day. Fist light is a great time, then 11 am 1 pm then possibly late in the day but I usually do not call late day as much. Several reasons for not calling too much: 1) They can locate you! 2) Deer move so if you keep calling in one location deer will know something is not right! 3) Early season calling is great but if they spot you on the ground it will probably not work on that doe group again unless you make it sound like the fawn is being attacked by predators. Only issue with that fawn in distress call is the doe come in quick and on high alert and that can make for a hard shot. This call is more of a location call and doe usually will come in less weary of predators. This is what you are mimicking but this fawn is really small, this time of the year you would want the call a bit deeper than this baby of a few days. This is exactly what you are trying to mimic. This larger fawn wants Mom and some milk and is not afraid to call for Mom. You can use the cans but I find it is easy to do with your mouth. Simple Maaaa, Maaaaaa will work if you keep it high pitched, tuck your chin back to make the doe bleet.

    Rut!

Seeing more rubs pop up. Not much buck activity so far. Looking for things to kick off this weekend and really get in full swing the following weekend!
  5. No rusting, composite stock, great shooting round, what more could you ask for?
  6. 1995 yes this gun was heavy to lug around that's for sure but with the over under sights I was good out to 150 yards plus with open sights, long distance the scope was pathetically awesome! This was an awesome gun for hunting just a bit on the heavy side for me. Remember it's not the gun but the round you are using that makes the gun good, black does not mean it is evil! Many hunters use a 308, does not matter what it is fired from!
  7. Nothing wrong with a little bit of fear or readiness it is what keeps you alive. That fear also generates respect, caution and being prepared. NFA No Fooling Around because up in those deep woods someone gets lost every year, and never comes out alive again. Same with the ocean, driving a car or anything that can cause your demise. Many people never worry about getting robbed, having a car stolen or someone braking into your house, then when it happens they lock all doors and keep an eye out, goes back to perspective. While I would like to have a gun when I was deer hunting with 2 - 500lbs black bears in the area it was bow season, the cop can get away with it, not me, boy was he scared and he did not even come back in the dark. Let me tell you EVERY black bush and dark rock looked like the Mom or Pop Bear! With only a bow and knife I was ok and 99.9% of the time so will you if you are hunting NY. One thing is for sure: When I am armed in the woods the only thing I really worry about when I get stuck in the dark is missing DINNER! Nothing in the woods will stop me from getting back to that! Food is probably the thing I look forward to the most when hunting! It's so GOOD!
  8. My sandwich is probably 2 lbs, lol. I am afraid to weigh my pack. Lets just say between the flashlights batteries and extra clothes I have a lot! And I need to work out more, lol. ADK is going to kick my but this year!
  9. Happy B-Day, good luck this year wherever you are!
  10. Same happened to me on last years doe but I did pick my arm up slightly on the shot. That can result in a bad flight for the arrow. Did you move your arm at all on the shot? If not then I would say double check your flight to see if the arrow is flying true. If your arrows paper tune good and shoot left and right even out to long distance, I would not change anything on the bow. If the deer jumped at the same time as the shot this would have the same effect. Almost the same as the front leg braking the arrow I would think. Did the deer jump the string? Might be a penetration issue with the rage open after entry into the chest but the damage they do is worth not having an exit every time. IMO Otherwise like stated, nothing wrong with loosing an arrow for each deer, keep up the good work and Congrats on the Doe!
  11. Really depends on where I hunt. On LI private land I see deer every day. Public land I often see deer daily if I hunt area's with high population. Other areas on public land I can go sometimes a few days before seeing any activity usually no more than 3. Up North in the ADK it can be hard and sometimes just seeing a doe is a victory. Otherwise by the 5-7th day I usually start putting the puzzle together and that is when I usually start to see more deer including bucks. The real factor is population. Simply put if you have a good population you will see deer every day for the most part. A few factors to consider, weather fronts, high temps 20 degrees above normal and if any doe are coming into heat will all affect deer movement.
  12. Good luck, that's not right. Keep us posted on your progress.
  13. Today 52 Yards I aimed a little high and it hit high, not much of a drop from 50 pin.
  14. I have to agree this is normal, young bucks just can't help themselves. Plus you can have doe come into heat now, like stated this is the first cycle, (Or the start of it.) another month or so and the 2nd then same in Dec with November as the prime rut. All it takes is one doe in heat to get that testosterone going not much else to do but eat fight and chase tail. Why not start early they have nothing better to do!
  15. Yesterdays shot at 30 yards.
  16. That sucks! So sorry. Working for Chevy for 13 years I wanted something that would last. Over 180,000 on my 2003 Tacoma and still kicking. Now it is just for hunting and I will get another 7 years out of it I hope! Total repair cost less than 1000 $ until I do the 700$ window regulator and motor, arg. So far only repairs where one O2 sensor and a U-joint from towing in salt water. Love Chevy just wish they where made better! Much more fun driving a truck than having to fix it all the time!
  17. Most of the guys who do it are by accident. I would never shoot through something that close, a slight touch of the mesh will send your arrow into right field even if it was a perfect shot!
  18. I have to remember the fireball, I think that is the real deal! I hate those things but apparently they give good luck and I need some of that! My buddy uses doe P to cover his P out of the tree. He keeps giving me some, now I have 2 bottles one of buck P and one doe P, that is the only 2 things in my fridge. After updating my GPS my other friend did a doe in heat drag from my buck spot in 2010 to my buck spot in 2013 now my GPS will never go on another computer except my own. And now I hate people who do scent drags, lol j/k.
  19. So far so good, they penetrate almost as much as my heavier arrows, hope to test them on a deer this season if I can find one I want to shoot.
