Venison Collection Endeavor 2010 by Fletch
NYBowhunter replied to Fletch's topic in Member Hunting Journals
On opening day I was tucked away surrounded on three sides by pine trees, I heard the wind but did not feel a thing...lol -
There is no doubt in my mind legal or not, I would have put that deer down. We are all hunters, but I think most if not all of respect and admire animals therefore we should not ignore a animal that is suffering. Wether it be a feral cat, deer , coyote etc.... that was found hurt and beyond recovery and was ultimately going to die, I would choose to move the process of life along and end the animals suffering. I had once in the past put a wounded deer down and used my tag. It happened to be a button buck that had been shot by another hunter and the deer had bedded down near me.

I took a nice big 3 pointer opening day in 4F that was 120 lbs field dressed, saw three bucks on opening day along with 2 does and a button buck.

I'm in 4F as well, no chasing going on. Had one doe come in on opening day with a 3 pointer and were feeding. I shot a 3 pointer later that day that was with another buck a spike. I have not seen any scrapes as of yet. Have seen lots of deer in fields and plots with no chasing going on. However in our area things should heat up by the end of Oct. Good luck this weekend.

The plot you see is half clover and the other half is turned anually for Brassica's (turnips/Broccoli Rabe). I also have another smaller plot that is in front of where these pictures were taken, that plot is six feet lower in elevation then the plot shown and has clover and chickory. I never tried soy or bush beans. The deer by me really like the clover and devour any Brassica plot I put in... I may want to mix with my turnips next year a deep root raddish that I have spoken with my local agway about or I may mix in some sugar beets?????I'll have to research the raddish and sugar beets somemore. I'm still waiting to see how the turnips perform in the late season.

Fantail congrats on your booming success thus far. Thanks, I was up all night thinking that I would find my buck all eaten up, there are coyotes and fox all over and I was fortunate to find him intact. -
Congrats, thats a dandy buck...

Pictures of bucks on a trail leading into one of the plots, most of these bucks have been around since in velvet and hopefully will stay around much longer.

2010 Deer Harvest Thread - Post your Pics and Success Stories!

Heres a buck I took on opening day, I took pictures with a disposable camera so it will have to wait until I can post pictures of him, but here is a recent picture of him from the trail cam. He is a very tall 3 pointer field dressed @ 120 lbs. Took him just before dark, I was setup a couple hundred yards off my food plots, he had come in with another buck (a spike). I had heard them staging up under the pine trees for a good 15 minutes before they came into the stand of apple trees I was setup over. The rage 2 broadhead lived up to all the hype, the arrow broke through his front shoulder and was lodged in his opposite shoulder. The shot took out his shoulder and his lung. I found 3/4 of the arrow on the ground with blood on it and the other 1/4 of arrow was recovered in the deer and suprisingly was fully intact with only a slight kink in one of the blades. It was dark after I waited awhile and gathered everything so I decided to let him go over night. My dad and I found him about 100 yards away, he went down into a ditch and crossed the stream on my property. The blood trail was excellent as well. -
Cant wait, I'm heading up tommorrow night......my area is calling for cloudy on opening day with temps. for a high of 45F and low of 31F...guess we will need to put the wood stove to use...

I hear you loud and clear....my dad is retired but is always running around doing things...on the other hand it is also nice to be able do things at your pace and when you want to do them,,Enjoy the trail cam... you got a good one there.,

Who is ready for the "Southern Zone" Oct 16th opener!?!
NYBowhunter replied to burmjohn's topic in Bow Hunting
I just have a couple small things to do, so I'll be heading up to the cabin on Wednesday night. Practice a little with the bow, retrieve the SD cards, put a camo skirt on one of the stands and shoot the rifles and ML a bit. I'll be hanging around for Sat., Sunday and Monday morning..... ...I'm about to jump out of my skin I cant contain myself....I want to wish everyone the best of luck... -
Hey Eddie where do you hunt in the jungles of Belize..lol..that stuff looks real thick...they must bed close to that stand...
-
Nice picture Doc....how do you forget about putting a trail cam out with all these fabulous pictures being posted by members?

I have actually retrieved 3 gut shot deer, one for my dad that I had found about 300 yards from where he shot it, with hardly no blood what so ever. The other was for my cousin, we let that deer bed over night and we tracked her for over a mile and sometimes we were on our hands and knees. The above were shot with rifles. The third was a spike I shot with my bow about 6 years ago, it bedded down about 40 yards from me when I got down from my stand it took off. I gave that deer about 4-5 hours to die, we tracked it for a few hundred yards. It crossed a road and went into a property we knew very well.We went to a certain area based on our instinct after not finding anymore blood and we jumped the deer out of its bed. We tracked that deer for a couple hundred more yards and jumped it another time. We then come face to face with the buck as he went into a stream, but he could not make it up the other side of the bank. I went back to get the quad and by the time I came back the buck had died. Not happy with gut shots but they do happen. If you are persistent, a gut shot deer can be recovered.

Real nice, is that from the island?

Shot my buck last year with Grim Reapers which are practically identical to Splitfires, the first 20 yards found very little blood after that it was like someone threw a bucket of red paint on the floor. The buck only went 40yds or so. I think the lack of blood in your case has to do with the distance the deer went after shot as oppossed to the type of blade your using. My friend has been using splitfires for a long time now and swears by them. Also the intestines that were hanging out of the exit wound would contribute to the lack of blood as well.
