Actually with NY's population going down (our population has NOT grown) and the license sales flat the % of participation in hunting would be going up.

Steve. How is that set up? pick one color or two?

Steve’s stings are top notch. The one he made for my recurve is wonderful. I’m going to have to figure out how to take mine off and I’ll send them to you Steve to match them up

What do you do with the flank meat?

we separate them down to their smallest muscle group as well. Usually yields pieces that are pretty good for 2 person consumption. -

you mean the false backstrap. Texture and tenderness on par with the backstrap. -
I believe that is what he was talking about. I like those becasue they take up little room. The ones I have gone to that really resist freeze up are the Polar-therms. Never had one freeze and it can be set for light bites or set heavy to resist a false flag from big bait fish https://www.fishusa.com/product/HT-Enterprises-Polar-Therm-Extreme-Tip-Up

We go the "all roast" route because we can decide what we want to do with it at any time and even with vacuum sealing there is less chance of freezer burn loss. . Thaw a roast and cut into steaks. partial thaw a roast and slice thin for jerky. Use it as a roast. Grind it if we run short on ground. Too many times we had steak packages and wanted to do jerky and that is a real pain slicing from steaks. ...lol -
treat yourself. You'll not regret it.

The shanks actually don't fair too poorly in the canning process. That said, with the amount of deer we take I grab the tenderloins, backstraps, front upper shoulders and the deboned hind quarters. I grab the neck roasts for pulled venison. Hinds go into just roasts, back straps into 6" long sections and front shoulders into stew/grind. The rest goes to the cookie pile. -
That is on my bucket list. I know two that did go on one in Texas. It was insane when I saw their video.

You are right. so take the deer that makes you happy and let them take the deer that makes them happy. See how that works. What you want if for them to only take the deer that makes you happy

I just checked Facebook marketplace out by me and there are set ups for $100-150 with about all you would need. They are out by Rochester but I bet they have a lot by you as well.

As long as we are talking about safety, I think the best $10-15 you can spend is on a set of Ice survival picks. Worn around neck or around your chest in some fashion they provide the ability to pull yourself up on the ice is you go though in most cases. There is literally nothing to grip to without something like this. Ponds and small lakes may seem like the best and safest place to start but I offer this word of caution. be careful around inlets, outlets, springs and hard features (like dock posts and trees). Ice can be much thinner than the ice in the rest of the water.
-
don't forget ice...lol. Been an issue some years. You really need to clarify what your target species is. It will make a difference in whats needed. Some stuff will be the same other won't. For instance if you said you were only going after northern Pike and would be fishing big water, I probably wouldn't recommend a 6" auger. But if you were solely going for pan fish I might. I don't like drilling any more ice then necessary.

with snow and him just not willing to go into thick crap to follow up I can see this is going to be a very very long road. having to learn hunting skills is one thing but you can't learn lazy away.

the one guy made a 30 yard broadside shot. It stood for a bit. turned and ran at them. it was was head on, had to arrow it again, and ended up collapsing about 10' from him. That was about a 300# boar. It may not be a real hunt but I bet the pucker factor was real...lol

I had two buddies that did a high fenced Russian boar hunt with bows. They were on the ground and it actually took them a full day to get close enough for a shot. I guess the ones there were not kept in a small pen but left out in the full enclosure. Anyway they each taped each other on each stalk. It was pretty freaky how those things actually charged at the shot. I think he figured it out back then that the price per pound was just a tad over buying commercial pork at the store

Many states do scale the fines based on Anyler size. I wish we had done it that way. -

Nah. You kind of missed my dilemma. It isn’t so much about the deer but more about the use of he deer I guess. I know that technically there is t a real difference but I am conflicted putting a guy shooting deer to feed their family because they are in a rough spot VS a guy doing it to put horns on the wall or putting it off as a legally taken deer. I have spent years up in your neck of the woods and it his band of mine he State from you east to Vermont boarder hold a lot of folks that do put needed venison on the table regardless of season or method. I know it sounds pretty liberal(which is out of character for me. Lol) but it feels different. -

I agree but would like to see forfeiture or anything utilized in the crime. gun/bow-gone...vehicle-gone....House? But I also struggle with other things that I know goes on and can about justify it in my head. Guys shooting deer to feed the family. I know it is viewed differently by LEO's if there isn't a big stink made. Don't be bragging in the bar, don't be like these douchebags and trophy poaching. -

I can’t remember the original numbers. I do know there were other provisions as well, including loss of license and that went away too. Would have been much easier if all the hunters had actually contacted their Reps and put pressure on them. -

The new poaching law and fine structure won't be in place for about 3 more months. While the new fines are quite a bit higher than they were, I feel they aren't enough. To me the structure should be like other states. The bigger the buck the more "value" the the people of the state and the higher the fines. The initial proposal was much higher and tougher on the poaching law. The feed back was it was too high and tough an would not get support or pass -
Steve. Can you do them for cam crossbows? I picked up a killer instinct furious 370. The serving on the stock string sucks. The serving is separating and I only put about 2 dozen bolts though it. It pinches and spreads the serving where the cocking rope hooks bind
