use to have cut corn under big plastict in the feed lot and the deer would wait for my son in law to take a bucket of the corn for the cattle and follow him and eat with the beef. They also all summer when the corn was ready for picking in the field all day eating away. I am aware of several hunting clubs use to have in Feb a work day on there lands to cut brush for deer. The brush piles also then made great holding areas for birds and rabbit.

Most Versatile Caliber for NY Hunting?
sweet old bill replied to CFD914's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
dollar for dollar the Mossberg 500 is a great buy and with it you can take any game in NYS. I have both the 20 ga and 12 ga. Also have several rifle in 308 cal and 303 cal.. but still use most time the 12 ga slug for deer and number 6 shot for birds and rabbit... -
Governor Announces Support for Crossbows in NY
sweet old bill replied to Tinlodge's topic in CrossBow Hunting
so the problem here is if a person has a different view than you they got to be a pinko left wing trash. I sure found that there have been lots of ideas under this subject and yes in some cases they do not apply to just a crossbow. I for one use to think that a crossbow would hurt our sport of archery as I shot both trad and even a evil compound. But that was the same way people felt as when the compound came in the 70's, it was going to have just the gun hunter shooting arrows at great distance and deer running around with arrows stuck in there butt. A survey was done by several states and they found when the season was only trad bows, the average shot was under 22 yards, and now with the new tool of the compound bow the average shots was under 27 yards. Most deer killed on the average was still about the same 10 to 20 yards for a kill shot. The biggest change was from stalking on foot to the use of a new tool called the baker tree stand or use of building your own stand with 2 x 4. I now feel that the crossbow will keep our number strong and may help even increase the overall archery season. these our my own feeling of the left wing pinko hunter. Who at 73 still hunts with his compound at 56 ponds and or his checkmate hunter trad recurve at 45 pounds Bill -

seems the new 2014 bows are out and now is the time to pick up a left over bow from a dealer at about 1/3 less than in Oct. I got a new 2013 PSE drive compound bow that should meet my needs for the coming year. great back wall and the draw is very smooth. anyone out there shoot one and how do you like it.

red pine and if the trees are under 5 foot is a good place to walk, with snow on the ground you may also see hare run ways. it is very hard without a dog, they do run a big circle if being pushed by a pack of beagles. Sure use to love to have dogs and do hunt them all winter long.

it does occur, I have found if you back off the poundage and use a Q tip with bow wax on it and rub the wax in the noise will go away for a long period. Or take it back to the pro shop and ask them to correct the noise problem.

Hi if you are going south to MB SC, make sure you bring your bow, they have a great practice area at the Sand dune archers and also hold monthly 3D shoots. I go down for a 3 month period so I joined the club, as I read the very cold and snow from upstate NY, today they are calling for sunny and 65 degrees. I have a buddy that stays at the same hotel as we do so he brings his New 2013 Hoyt 3D bow with him, I bring my two old 2007 bows with me a bowtect commander and a hoyt hunting bow. Plus about two doz arrow and a tackle box to fine tune if I have a problem. They are hold a two day shoot on the 25 and 25 30 3D targets for the ASA state shoot , I am shooting as a senior master class Over 72 years young. They have shotgun start at 8 am. if you have interest go to there site on line for directions from were you are staying. best to all Bill

He wanst to run for the top job in the good old USA....just as bad as his father, great with a mouth of gold and no care for the people. I have tried for over a year now to go to a dicks or bass pro store and find a box of lr 22, 308 150 gr soft point and or 303 British Enfield and had zero luck in NY and SC. I now have to see there madness they do not have to take the guns, there no good without bullets... by the way the crazy and or bad people will always find a way to get arms / weapons. I have enough ammo to keep going for a few more seasons, and was able prior to all these changes to get some full metal jacket for target shooting etc. So at 72 I am ok, but for my grandson and his love for the hunting I see a end in sight. We got to get guys like Como out of the office. By the way I am a life long Dem.... -
god bless you and hope you are on the way to be better real soon.

the key is the spine. if the spine is right they will fly great for you. Most carbon are so good now, you can not have a problem. I shoot the Easton with 2 inch fletch and out of my hoyt bow they fly like darts.

all well said, if it very cold and dry it is so hard for the dog to work a rabbit. -
strange and scariest things while hunting or fishing NY
sweet old bill replied to noodle one's topic in General Chit Chat
I was fishing and a snake came swimming by and I had to make tracks out of the water. But the sound of a pack of coyotes running in the dark as you sit in a natural ground blind waiting for the first sign of daylight is still number 1 on my list. -
two bag targets with a 4 by 8 ft plywood in back of the bags. but we now go south for 3 months in Myrtle beach SC, shot yesterday at the practice area, 55 temp and sunny skies.... Sand dune archers first 3d shoot is 3rd week of Jan for ASA. I will be shooting as a senior master over 72 years young.
