I joined a deer camp in the 90's in central NY, it had the perfect name " Outdoor For Ever " .... the camp was started by one family from Johnson city and was made up of a lot of firefighters, police and local IBM's. I was in the group for over 10 years and loved the mix of guys, lots of guys that wanted the club to grow, no issues with getting helping hand to have new project for the club, the house was next to 7500 acres of state land. We had the upstarts as a barrack setup of over 20 beds. I liked the area so much I purchase my own piece of land and built a camp on it, and when I retired from IBM I built my retirement home.

At 73 years young, I use a single pin , but do it the old way, just shoot the marks in and then make my own tape. The others as you suggested are close, but it seems at the lower weight of the bow peak weight for my ( bow setup is 55 lbs peak weight ) I do better making up my own yardage marking on the computer. I have marks from 20 yards, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and last 55 yards.

I shot yesterday and had a group of 10 arrows that were in a 3 inch spot. I had two of the arrows that were just on the right side of the spot on the edge, but was due to the wind at times, it was hard to hold on the center of the spot at 25 yards. My buddy was raving on the bow and he is now in the market to get this PSE Drive model bow. He also has a 2007 Hoyt and that still will be his backup bow like I have mine. I also played with my New 2013 40 inch 3D bow from Alpine, have it setup with a fiber optic scope, Tox slider sight, 12 inch stabilizer, also have a 30 inch stabilizer for shooting NFAA or 900 round, I still am shooting a WB's rests on all my bows. I find I do just as well with them than with a fall a- way rest. They are more user friendly for a old fart like me 73 years young and still shooting. I also am shooting a Winn hook release, my backup release is a short / sweet release. I use to shoot for Hot shot a few years ago.. I had a old Hot shot that I sent in for repair and they sent me a new one to replace the old one. Now that what I call Mfg service.

the bow is just about 4 oz more than the hoyt. It does seem if you get the heavy bow that they make less noise when you shoot a arrow. Also the bow just seems to lay in the hand during the shot process.

Nothing like finally a sure sign of spring, sunny sky, and a new PSE Drive model bow to sight in. I was able to sight in out to 35 yards. The bow shot like a dream, it is to replace my 2007 Hoyt. But the Hoyt will stick around as a great bow for hunting and backup.

looks like they used the report and finding from 2012 and just added a line or two here and there.

So cross bows are in. As a archer of 73 that still shoots both a compound and a recurve at 45 lbs, I thank god each day that I still can. But I sure know a few guys my age that are thanking that now they can get back in the hunt during the early season with a cross bow. Due to age and or other health issue. I may want to try it myself. But for all the guys that say it should not occur, you just have to follow the $$$$. As a archery pro shop owner for over 25 years, It started about 6 years ago, with the big cross bow firms, started getting all the state writers to a free hunt to try out cross bows, then were I used to buy from XXXXX started having them as the hot new products that every little or big dealer just had to have in stock. So there in now, lets just hope the new cross bow hunters will be as the traditional hunter or compound hunter is in taking the time to learn how to use there equiptment and also what is there ability prior to hunting and not take shots that will not kill but just wound a deer.. By the way I have shot a PSE crossbow, and would not want to trade in my Hoyt bow for it. The crossbow is heavy, needs a rest, would be a pain to carry, and I am sure a pain to get into a tree stand to shoot.

On the side hill that do not get full sun it still is a lot of snow, 5 to 8 inches of snow. On the side that get full sun you see lots of brown ground.; But we still are getting snow showers and it stay very cold 12 degrees this morning with light snow showers.

Welcome a good hunt club is Walden rod and gun club, they have archery and guns both...

best to you and your new bow.

at 73 I am just as good as a deer to know a front is coming and bd weather is about to set in. SO on those days I get out of bed, cry a little to get started and then am out in the woods. The deer will feed prior to the storm hitting.

Im with Doc a old fart likes me has a wall of bows and keeps giving them away to start new archers out. But some of the old one's that are 8 years old still I take a walk in the woods with me. Why they are slow, look not that great in the finish, are setup with WB rest, but shoot were I look so that why for me they still work great. It what you the archer like.My buddy John has unlimited $$$ and has to have a new bow each year, and it has to have all the new sight, bells on it, but it sure does not shoot any better score wise than my 7 year bowtect commander when we are at the 3D shoots.

As a archery dealer for over 20 years I have to tell you the best is what feels good in your hand. It does not have to me the top of the line bow or the one that costs the most. It has to fit you that why I suggest you go to a good dealer and be checked out for draw length. Also for hunting or target it does not have to be a 60 to 70 lb bow, it can be a 50 to 60 lb bow will kill all are big game in the USA. Why kill yourself and get bad habits due to to much poundage. I myself have several bows I use, some are single cam and others are duel cam or cam 1/2.. I have shot my best scores with a older bowtech commander and then my hoyt bow. They just feel right for me. When I draw on a target or deer, I know the arrow will go where I am sighted in on. So take your time and try lots of them. Once you get the new bow, start trying to learn how best you can set it up and fine tune it for yourself. good luck in your selection of a new bow and a lifetime of fun with archery. Bill

Light rain now, but still calling for a lot of snow later in the day with high winds. I for the first time could see brown ground in a few spots and deer on the side hill looking for food. I am sick of this winter.

Look again at what Doc said and he is right on. Both the pro shops you talked about are great. I had my own shop for 20 + years and they will get you into the sport. First is making sure you are measured correctly for draw length, being a first time archer you may want to consider a bow in the 50 to 60 lb range, have it setup on the low side so you can build up to later in the year be on the 56 or higher weight range. Being over bowed or to much bow weight can be a killer for a new archer. You slide into bad habits. my best too you and hope you will have a life long new sport. Bill

What is your greatest memory while hunting?
sweet old bill replied to DeerStalker22's topic in General Hunting
at 73 I have to say getting the first buck with my Dad and his buddies at the hunting camp in 1958. There have been many other bucks but that 7 point buck was number 1 in a life of loving to hunt with both the bow and gun. -

Sure would be great if this was offered to all low income student that wanted to go to, but did not have the $$$, but have a test to make sure they have the ability to go. Not like some of the programs were they keep getting grants, get dollars for living period without cutoff. I have a grand daughter who has to work her butt off at Brooks waiting tables to get her education. No help there Mr. Como who wants to be the leader of this country. Your actions over the years make me a life long dem sick, I want you out.
