What's the one thing you don't want to do while bow hunting?
sweet old bill replied to First-light's topic in Bow Hunting
I sat in a hand made stand one year and in the rain and wind. I got ready to go down to meet my buddy and turned to pull up the rope. I then saw a 4 point buck about 20 yards in back of the stand eating apples. I put a arrow in the bow and drew and released the arrow. The bottom limb hit the stand seat, missed the deer, broke the 3 week old new bow bottom limb. Some days it may be best to stay at home. -
the gang of trad did not get a deer, the rains and winds were there for both days. But what they did have was a lot of fun, goood friends old and new, and outstanding food meals ...

Doc it may not be the hunting togs that cause the problem but when you put them on they sure does not feel the same as shooting in a t-shirt and 85 degree weather. A lot of guys go thru this as they seem to for some reason to with heavy hunting togs to overdraw there bow and also change how they ancor. That sure can make you change the right or left of the arrow as you change the position of the release on your ancor and also the peep position...

great shot, that what you call knock down power...for sure what the bow setup Hoyt peak lbs and draw, arrow, release etc... and how far was the bird from your blind...

what do you do with your old one you take out...want to send to a cheap old hunter ??? I have several bows that have them on the old style WB rest and maybe have been shooting them over 5 years now and never see any problem with the rest. Still seem to shoot as well as the first day I put them on the bow. I even have one bow has the old b lack style one that had the big hole for alum and it shoots carbon just great, less ware on feathers or vanes...

I wish I could do as well as that with my recurve. I still play at it but come hunting time most days I take the compound with the sight and release. I do find that if shoot a trad bow the FOC should be in the higher level as it then also iuncrease the down range peneration of the arrow. Some even add weight tubes to the carbons to get the total arrow weight up as the same they had with alum arrows.

I had a buddy who when he returned from hunting he put his bow arrows on top of the roof of the car to have his hand free to open up the car and then jumped in and took off. He traved about a hour plus to his home and found at that time his bow was missing. He was lucky as he drove right back and the bow was not damaged or taken it was on the dirt road he had been hunting from. -
I had a 6 point buck just about under a stand in a old apple trees setup. I just watched him to get about 10 yards a way from the tree I was in. I drew on him and then overshot him with my first pin set at 25 yards...forgot aim small miss small and should have put the pin on the heart and not center mass. In this case center mass results in over the back and bye bye deer.

I have one buddy who has used them and the key is he used a hair dryer to get them to shrink down. I myself just use the wraps and then fletch normal. I can buy 36 vanes / wraps for what he pays for just 12...

They are having a hunting camp time for trad archers this weekend and I sure wished I was able to go but with that type of weather I may enjoy the baseball playoff or football on tv and stay dry. Till I hear of all the fun of a bunch of guys hunting together and the meals that about 12 guys had the wifes put together. It is not about the amount of deer taken just old and new friends getting together in a sport all they love.

I shot the recurve in the morning and it was fun. But getting 30 fish on a fly road must be a great time.

that good to know, from the photo it sure looks like you have to buy a total rest assm.. .I have 4 bows setup with the WB and will never change as they sure seem to work without a issue. I try to keep it to the Kiss ( Keep it simple stupid ) way of hunting.

good luck with your new bow and hiope you post a photo of the bow and a great buck you take this year with it...

The real test is my 2 xl camo coverall still fit from one season to the next and or do I still have time to lose about 15 lbs prior to snow fall. I have scheduled the middle of this coming week for wash all the camo and air out the wool. A great time I heard about for wool is just put them in a larget plastic bad with a 1/4 box of baking soda and shake it around awhile and then pull the wood coat / pants out of the bad and let air for about two hours and he siad all human scent is gone. I am going to try it as I sure do not send my wool to the cleaners. He also said he sprays down the coat and pants with leaves of fall scent killer and also then put the wool in a plastic tote from Walmart that he puts pine in the bottom of the tote. I know that works as that how I store all my hunting items with pine in the bottom of a tote. I have 5 totes nowto handle the sizes from fat to real fat or 2 xl to 3 xl....

I have not head any bad words on the ELete bow ling. I just wish I had a dealer near me to shoot one. I see some of the major bow mfg start shooting the 2012 bows as early as Oct 16 for Hoyt.

I went about 15 years ago to a Easton arrow education center for Archery dealers and they had as a guest speaker the coach of the USA archery team and he talked about setting up bows and paper tuning, He asked as his first question how many use paper tuning and of the class there was only 3 of us that siad no we did not. He asked me why, and I told him since I was not a mechnical maching I did not think that I could have the same shot each time due to I was at that time a finger shooter and not a release.. He siad right on and then showed us flims of how by setting up the bow to paper sure did not seem to work as well as just making sure you had a good nock point and then putting baby powder on the rest / riser area and then shoot one arrow. Then check for drag marks to see if the arrow is clearing the rest without a hitting the riser etc. If hitting the riser you may have to fine tune the arrows to the bow like the arrow is to stiff or too weak a spine and have to lower the peak weight on the bow...I try to keep it all simple, I use a WB rest setup for me as now just a hunter. Works great in hunting for those shows under 40 yards. Most deer taken have been under 30 yards in the north east states due to are heavy brush etc, not like out west.

How about joing the Walden rod and gun club they may have a range...in Walden NY -
and you guys did not plant your food plot with rice to bad for you all.... I have not cut the grass now in 3 weeks , just to wet. I am sick of it, lets get some sunshine and maybe in another 2 weeks a hard frost to kill off the rag weed and those deer flies...

hind legs, just seems to make it easier to then skin out. Plus I cut the nexk open and put a hose in and run water inside the body cavity to make sure it is clean, then skin out and cutup / wrap. I like to do with the same day if possible, I try to handle like a fine piece of beef.

Living in Franklin NY it is great as we get into Oct to see the leaves change and the start of the bow season in the middle of the month. But for hunting I have found that we need two hard frost to get the brush down and most years it seems to be we get into that last weekend of October and the bucks are in the chase for the doe's I stay out all day and just enjoy the time afield. I have been hunting now for over 50's years. I wish I could say that I have taken over 50 bucks with the bow but I let a lot walk on by and I am not a doe shooter. I have taken what I call about a doz good bucks of over 6 points, most were 8 points. I did one time shoot a 7 point with a drop tine.
