  1. use dental floss string and it is easy to work with and does a great job...
  2. I had dogs all my life, raised them from pups and sold as trained hunting dogs. I felt the same way just like you lost a child or wife to illness when they passed away. You will over time get over the loss, but will remember the best of times hunting with your dogs. At 73 I no longer have any but can think back to working with the young pups, seeing them run there first rabbit or hare, the sound of 4 dogs running as a pack, Most of my dogs passed away at 15 years on a average, one little 13 inch girl named Judy would get so mad that she no longer could run with the young pups, I would put her in my hunting coat, game bag, she would bark with the pack as they ran a rabbit. 3. Not me at 73, I will wait till it is spring. We are even having snow in Myrtle beach SC today, with 1 inches maybe and turning then to rain later in the day. But this week no going out to the local Sand dune archers that I am a member and shooting the bow, practice area is covered with water from lots of rain in the pass 3 days, but come Sunday it will be sunny and 68 degrees they are calling for so I will be out there with the bow...
  4. I wish some of the local shops would put on a open day to try out cross bow and educate us on how to use a cross bow.
  5. Stay in and be safe. with those kind of wind chill you can have all kinds of bad things occur. I am down south in Myrtle beach till April 1 and hope then to see brown ground as we travel back. We are going to be highs of 40, but winds in the 20 to 25 mile a hour range. So even here it will not be a trip out to Sand dune archers. I got a new 3D bow that now has been shot in and it now in the stage of fine tuning the marks for yardage. But it looks like this will not be the week, as all week it is very cold and for me with COPD, I will have to sit it out. so it hot tub and the 85 degree pool for me today. Plus crying for Big orange and there loss to Duke from last night. Think brown ground and Opening of trout fishing.
  6. thanks all for the suggestions...maybe the best for me is to stay with my other rifle and that is a Remington 742 semi auto in 308 cal that I have setup with a 3 to 5 scope and am shooting Remington soft nose in 180 gr... I do not do the walking I use to and just look for a place close to the road or our pasture to sit... So OMG suggestion is the best for me...
  7. Does they make a light weight single shot rifle in 308 cal....as I am 73 now, my WW II 303 cal British Endfeld that must weigh 15 lbs with the scope is starting to feel that it should retire and stay on the gun rack for the grandson.
  8. I will have to say that were I stay in the winter for 3 months is a great area, and that is Myrtle Beach SC at Sandy beach resort, we rent by the month and go back on April 1 to most years to brown ground and the hint that warm weather and green is coming. The staff here is great, you look out your window at the Ocean, have all kids of food place and shopping for the wife. At the hotel they have bingo 2 nights and card playing for 3 nights, so there is something to do, they also have fresh coffee free from 7 am to 10 am in the lobby area. I love to shoot my bow so I joined Sand dune archers of MB for $35 year membership, they have a great practice area that is from 10 yards to 80 yards. They hold monthly 3D shoots of 34 targets that is set in the pine woods on flat ground. Cost is $10 to members and $15 to non members. We have 3 guys from here that bring our bows and shoot 3 to 4 times a week. The bow club is 20 minute drive from the hotel on the average based on traffic. Now some would say I just want to buy a place, well that fine, I purchased a place here and had it rented out asa yearly rental, got time to retire fom Big Blue, and my wife said , please write, as I will be staying here with the kids and grand kids. So I sold the condo and here we are now for the 10 year....
  9. Mother nature seems to have the best way and that is the rabbit cycle of from a high to low is about a 5 year cycle, so when the rabbits is on the high side for numbers they get the mange and pass it on to the fox and coyotes...that keeps these population down on both...
  10. found over 5 young baby deer killed off two years ago, also several sets of just feathers from turkey young birds.., on 3 areas of pasture. I just wish the DEC would make hunting them all year long..
  11. TTT anyone have any opening if so were the hunting club located, yearly dues and cost to join ????? still looking for one in 4O....or 7M I lived in the Norwich / north Pharsalia area for 20 years, sure would love to find a place in that area.
  12. Best way is to take a trip in early summer and see if you can find a place. We found a bar that had a room to rent for hunters, and also went to the DEC to get recommendation of what were in the best hunting area, based on road kills of deer or bear...Found a logging firm that also would allow hunting for a fee. This was done several years ago, we had lots of great hunting times at 3rd Lake.
  13. Nothing like when you get a new bow, then setting it up and when for the first time you shoot it. I got a new 3D bow from Alpine a Concord 40 inches long, 29 inch draw, and with a peak weight of 50 lbs. The bow is for 3D, spot, or NFAA. The results were I did not need to do anything, the peep rotation was just right, the nocking point need no adjustment, the scope is a 4X, and the sight is a Tox that I had on my old bow. I was able to sight in from 20 yards out to 35 yards yesterday and going back today to get marks out to 60 yards. I shoot as a Senior master , that is a niece way of saying a old fart that is 73 years young and still loves to shoot a bow.
  14. Several studies have been done, most show that the traditional archer takes close shots 15 to 20 yards and has good recovery rates as the compound archers who takes longer shots 25 to 30 yards . The key is the how sharp the broadheads are, the trad hunter use 3 or 4 blade razore sharp Bh's the compound hunter may use this type of BH or now the closed in flight Bh.
  15. welcome and thanks for your service
  16. I am down south in SC and no can find even here.
  17. My thanks to all the suggestions. I will have to find a crossbow hunter in Delaware county near me to see and shoot what he is using so I can see if I want to have one. At 73 I still can and do shoot a PSE drive xl 2013 for hunting it is setup at 56 lbs and 29 inch draw. With sight, arrows (4), and quiver it is 5.6 lbs. Now that is much lighter than a cross bow. I no longer hunt from tree stands as I have bad legs and also COPD.
  18. Hi, I have hunted with a bow for over 55 years, still hunt with both a compound set at 56 lbs and a recurve traditional bow at 45 lbs. I would like to get a cross bow, but sure do not have a $1000 to lay out, being on SS / retired. Is there a brand that meets all needs to hunt with that does not cost a arm and a leg, or a recommendation for a used cross bow mfg and model that you would recommend.
  19. a great bow if it was 29 inch draw and a 50 to 60 I would be all over it. But at my age of 73 I need the bow to be down to about 55 lbs...
  20. same me a bowl.... always a great way to fix deer...when the weather is this cold stew is the way to go...
  21. down south in Myrtle beach for the winter, shot this weekend and it was 65 and some showers, they calling for this week good weather till Thursday then it a high of 35 for one day, then back to sunny and mid 50's.
