  1. Oct 30 thru Nov 12 for me has always been the best for Bow, the bucks are ready and the doe's are still not ready to breed so it is the chase period. The bucks are looking for that first doe to come into heat... I stay out most of the day, in several ground blinds that are natural materials, like a downed maple tree etc...have plastic chairs in them so I can sit.
  2. good luck with your new bow, may the hunting god allow a big buck to walk pass you...this season...please then post the photo's of the hunt.
  3. Being a old hunter at 74, I use 3 blade muzzy, due to they fly well for me and I use lower weight now, my compound is set up at 54 pounds. they seem to continue to go right thru a deer, move of my shots have been in the range of 15 to 25 yards.
  4. they are Balson pine and are about 1 ft to 3 ft....
  5. I have next to my shooting 3 D targets a spot that has maybe 12 pine trees that are 1 ft to 3 ft high, that is next to our land. He stopped by and asked why I was cutting back his trees ? I have not cut back the trees and or broken any off. What can be doing this to his small trees ? any ideas, I do not think a deer will eat ona pine tree. any ideas ?
  6. at 74 I am a fair weather hunter, does not mean I do not shoot a bow all year long to get ready for the season and or have my rifle sighted in and ready to go. I use to hunt all type of game, my hunting buddies for the most part do not hunt any longer and or passed on. I also have my own ills of COPD, plus now living in a new area that does not have a lot of state land to hunt. SO I take a few trips per season back to North Pharsalia are and hunt for the day. I still love the pre season and checking out the land for deer, by taking my old bow with wood arrows blunt tip and just shooting stumps and checking out were I hunted the prior year for deer sign.
  7. not deer looks ore like a herd of cows...wow
  8. Had one about that size under the front steps, wife got stung by the yellow hornets and we spent last Sunday at the hospital, I got stung when we got home trying to kill off the hive with the bee wasp spray. it took 3 bottles and a rake to finally get them all.
  9. I see the buck of your dreams waling along and the only missing part is you are not there, you are sitting home watching TV...get out there this year and maybe that buck will walk by... at 74, I do not hunt as much as I did in my youth, but still love the pre hunt scouting, just walking the woods and looking for deer sign or the first buck scrape. Then the plan take shape of were to do when on opening day the guns go off. I like the early bow season, warm weather and not a lot of hunters in the woods. I let the doe's and young bucks walk so I tell my wife of 50 years, but she says I just go out to take a nap by a tree. I hope all has a great hunting season Bill
  10. 303 with a 3 to 9 scope on it, got it in 1964, in Paramus at Ramsey outdoor store for less than $100. Has taken a lot of deer over the years. Was made in 1944 in CA Long Branch. I did redo the stock. No good looking as the new rifle, but for down right a working man rifle.
  11. that's it, they had a perfect first day, sunny and cool weather and it looks like the rest of the weekend will be also perfect weather. I even got out my bow yesterday, took the dust off of it and found I still can hit a target out to 20 yards.
  12. The Oxford NY archers are holding there yearly traditional archery only bow shoot this Friday thru Sunday. If you want a good time and see some great traditional shooters please come on out, They serve a great Breakfast and food is available all day. I attend as being a old fart of 74, still love to shoot. I must be the number 1 bad shoot so all my shots are under 20 yards or less, but you can see and meet a lot of great archers and just have a fun day. I hope to see you Bill
  13. have done both from a tree stand and or blind.
  14. that was my last base in the AF and then several years later I lived in Walden area and would past the backside of the base and hunted it for rabbit and deer both. I think the deer were more aware do to the activity in the area, but also I would also hunt the wet areas when it became ice and snow..
  15. sound like we all are old farts ( I am 74 ) and have a problem that will not go away. For me it is in my bow hand ( left arm ) as I draw with my right hand. It hurts all the time as I draw now. In the past I could go out and shoot for several hours, now the best I can do is shoot 1/2 course at the 3D shoots or about 20 arrows. I have found nothing that seems to help. the answer is keep doing what you love, the best you can do, for me it is decreasing the number of arrows I shoot. good luck and hope there is a answer for all of us.
  16. What a waste of time, this will never fly. As a life long hunter ( 74 year old ), with 7 guns and on SS. I can not think that the house or senate would support a bill to change your right to own a gun.. .I think in NY we have to be more worried about a local NY bill that says you have to have insurance to cover each gun you own, this would be like auto insurance.
  17. I have COPD so the days of big hills is a killer, so if they have a flat course I will shoot that one...Mountain trail has a hill like that in Binghamton, by the time you get to the top to start shooting, I am to tired to shoot.
  18. I had a balll for this old man of 74. The flat course of 20 targets was very wet, the temp were hot, the flies were so big they could almost carry you from target to target. The breakfast was great. all in all we started shooting at 9 am and was home prior to noon. all in all it was a great day...
  19. Gibertville rod and gun has a shoot today. A great archery course, good breakfast and lunch available. I am up and getting ready to drive over so I can shoot early due to the heat latter in the day. ( sun and temps in the high 80's )
  20. I have a Remington 742 model in 308 cal. works well, can not tell you how it groups but is dead on for 100 yards if I hold and do not make any human error.
  21. I went thru rehab a few years ago and started with a kids bow of 20 lbs and worked back up to a 60 lb compound over time. Now 74, I still shoot almost every day but the bow is now set at 53 lbs. The new bows seem to store foot lbs and are very fast. You do not need the high draw weight as in years past. I use carbon arrows and 100 grain fixed blade BH for deer.
  22. I am like you all and just love the sport of hunting, love the bow and also gun hunting..
  23. being a old fart at 74 years young I try to shoot a few arrows most every day. Still one of the things that brings enjoyment to me. I sure wish I could shoot as well as I did at 30 years old...but I still under 35 yards can get the job done. The only time is in the Jan to March period I got south to Myrtle Beach SC, and am a member of Sand dune archers and go out to there range about 3 times a week and have two other guys that stay were I stay that bring there bows so we have a good time shooting. Most days down there it is in the mid 50's to low 60's...but no snow...
  24. sure seems that the way it should be ..one person and one vote
  25. just what Doc said and do it early prior to the hunting season, now would be a good time to start.
