  1. Well Doc at 73 years young I sure do not hunt as well as I did at 20 years young. But to me it never was how many deer you can take or how many points on a rack. I first started at 10 going with my Dad to hunt camp for the weekend prior to opening day of Monday. Several of the sons who were to young to hunt would be there to help setup the camp. We were shown how to see the deer trails, rubs and scraps. We would also that night hear the tales of hunts of the past. I could not wait to be old enough to have my first tags and be able to go with my Dad and the other members of the hunt club. I was just 17 when I was able to take my first buck, it was a 5 point. I was to get the shot just at dark and only 30 yards away as he walked out of a swamp. The buck ran up the ridge and fell maybe 60 yards only from me. My Dad called to me and we then walked up to the buck and it was my first time to gut a deer as well. There have been many deer taken in my life but that one will always be with me, as the skill I learned from my Dad and the other member of that hunt club. I find as I recall hunts now it is more of the people I hunted with, the weather of the hunt and not so much if game was taken. )Over the years we sure enjoyed getting a deer and making speedies meat and having them in the summer. I now am in my last stages of a hunter, have to many medical issue to hunt in the back woods, have to take a cell phone to call the wife when I get to were I will hunt for the day. I go just 100 yards or less off the road on public hunting ground in North Pharsalia NY. It has 7500 acreas of land that over the last 25 years I have hunted most of the places and have taken deer. I still shoot a few arrows most days when weather permits, I now am down to 54 lb compound bow setup with a d-loop, kisser button, single pin slider site in fiber optic, and a winn release. I use carbon arrows with 2 inch BH vanes and 100 gr muzzy 3 blade BH, that are old style but for me have taken so many deer that I just can not change for what has worked year in and out. If I hunt rifle I use my old 303 British Enfield in 303 cal. I now am just a sitter and do not walk to much and for sure no more tree stands. I deer now becomes 1 in 5 years at best, and I take no does and or young bucks. I tell the young hunter that in hunting you have a life long activity that will give you a great life in the outdoor.
  2. 4O is almost snow free now. We have had several days of rain showers and they are calling for several more days of showers, On Sunday they are calling for high 50's and sunny. I would think we finally will be snow free by 4/20/15... I am in the town of Franklin.
  3. is there a site that will tell you the conditions of the water on the beaver kill ???
  4. Based on the snow cover and yesterday it snowed all day with snow showers,...white and green and brown spots may be just the thing to ware. if this winter finally ends in May.
  5. woods 50 yards till the leaves come off, open field 100 Yards.. as my rifle is sighted in for 100 yards. Plus at 73 years young I sure do not want to just wound a deer.
  6. If the cost is only about $5 more I would get this feature. Otherwise once you are sighted in the amount of adjustment is zero.
  7. At 73, and past owner of a archery pro shop. I have to say the bow I always just walking thru the woods with and shooting at stumps with was My Checkmate recurve bow, wood arrows with blunts it is 45 lbs at 28 inc and I draw 29 inch.. I have about 5 recurve bow, 1 long bow, 6 compounds and lots of arrow from wood, alum and of course Carbon. I currently am shooting Alpine Concorde target bows one green and black the other red and black. They are 41 inch long, setup with Tox slider sights and fiber optic scope. I am one of the old school that goes by the kiss way of doing archery and that is Keep it simple stupid. So I use WB rest on all the compound bows. I also have a bowtect commander and a Hoyt setup for hunting. All the same setup as with the target bows.
  8. I do not think it will be expanded in to the archery season.
  9. fiber optic scope single pin on a Tox slider sight. I preset to 25 yards and most years never have to move the sight in the hunting season. I do use it for 3D and NFAA were I can shoot 50 yards for 3D and up to 80 yards for NFAA.
  10. 12 foot is just right for most of the time, high enough to get the scent away from the deer, your ability to see deer coming in and sure helps with getting that bow up to shoot.
  11. I suggested they have a simple survey that you filled out as you went to get your tags. did you hunt last year, if yes what area, how many days, bow or gun or both. how many deer did you see in the area , doe, bucks did you take a doe or buck, how many points, with gun or bow suggestions for changes to the hunting season. I think this would give better insight in the local areas if implemented
  12. I had a camp in North Pharsalia on 12 acres, I had the camper on cement blocks and no electric, running water, or septic. I made sure I checked the town laws to keep the site as just land and it was tax as such. I did have a issue when I added electric, had to show the electric was just a plug in to the pole and not a electric on all the time, as I would only use for a few weekends... I would check first so no problems after you pay good money for your dream site. My location was next to 7500 acres of state land. Made a great camp for lots of years, when I retired I built a home on the site, sold it a few years later to be closer to the grandkids...
  13. beaver kill but not till the last week of April. Not a lot of people on the stream in mid week, and by then may have several hatches on the water.
  14. I have found in the past you find more of the deer herd die off in the month of June. Things are green, but they have lost to much of body fat and even down to loss in the bones marrow. I sure hope we have a early spring to help the deer herd.
  15. I am town of Franklin in Delaware county and we have about 30 inches on the ground, My guess is we will see brown ground sometime in April.
  16. If I was younger I sure would have a interest, but being a older fart 73, ure do not think I could cut it for the big woods. But you younger guys / gals the price is right for a good club, were else can you have the ability to have fishing and hunting for that little of a price. Sure wish this was over in the 7M area of North Pharsalia.
  17. wow great looking bear, were are you from in NJ ? I grew up in Paramus and now have been in upstate NY for over 40 years...I never have seen a bear in the woods. I use to hunt down by Liberty NY and did see tracks at times. Now in the catskills area and no a sign near our town of Franklin...
  18. come on brown ground and the start of green season
  19. At 73 I new them all, nothing like a old fart that still loves to shoot the bow, shoot the bull and just loves hunting with stick or gun...Hard to find other guys now, my age, I shot a 3D last year and won due to no other master senior left to shoot with...
  20. How about Stewart Air port for a meeting site, near rt 84 and is open hunting for Turkey I think....
  21. great looking gun, can we ask what the price tag is ????? I looke dna d liked the less than 7 lb weight, plus 30 - 30 is just about right for deer. I have two rifle, 1 is a old 303 British Enfield, about 11 lbs, the other is a 308 Remington 742 model semi woodmaster is about the same for weight 10.5 lbs.
