  1. I had the same occur at 52 years old from Big Blue, I took the buy out of a extra year salary. I got home from the last day, went into the bedroom and got rid of 9 suits, 18 white shirts, 9 ties, 4 pair of wing tip shoes, two winter top coats, 1 rain coat, 2 sport jackets and took them down to the free bank for need people in Binghamton NY. The biggest problem for me, was I needed another 30 months till my retirement kicked in so we had to do what we could do with part time work and our saving. I was lucky my wife went back to work and got a good job with a law firm. I become the house Mom,did the cooking cleaning and washing and started a local archery pro shop to keep me busy. We both never looked back the wife worked for 5 years at the law firm, I had the bow shop for over 18 years and then closed the doors when I was 70, so we could do whatever we wanted in retirement. Now 74 and still having a great time with life with the wife, kids and grand kids.
  2. Will it came a day again that I can go into DIck's and find a box of 22 cal LR for sale. I am now down to my last 20 rounds that I use for woodchucks.
  3. god bless those that were killed praying. I see there will be more outcry for take hand guys away and maybe even long guns. But again it sure seems that it is another person with mental issues.
  4. I just drill a smaill hole in the top of the quiver and run a piece of para cord thru it and tie a loop and it works just fine. cost less than a quarter for material aned time less that 5 minute to do....
  5. Tim that all part of hunting, making sure you have the right setup with arrow and BH's. I try to make sure that I do lots of pre scouting for state woods were I hunt is in North Pharsalia, over 30,000 acres of state woods. I do not put out any cameras as they may be taken. I lie to take my traditional bow with blunts and shoot stumps as I walk the areas I hunt. It give me a great way to check out the lay of the land for deer sign and also just fun for shooting the recurve bow. I deer hunt with my Hoyt compound bow, Winn release, peep, kisser, carbon arrows, 100 gr fixed 3 blade BH's. At 74 years young each season may be the last so I sure have fun being out in the woods. I still let the young bucks walk as well as the doe's. My wife seems to think I just go out in the woods and take long naps...I take a book with me and in the middle of the morning or early afternoon will read. I also no longer can use a tree stand so I have some plastic wall mart chairs set out in natural ground blinds.
  6. at 50 is the start of a 2nd life time, get a lot of discounts for age, the kids are on there own ( so they tell me ), but you also start to take a little more time doing things. I know at 74, still feel like a kid at times, but sure do have a bad day now and then. Have a great day with family and friends
  7. about 40 minutes I think...I am in the town of Franklin, have route 28 out my front door, so it would be on route 28 going East to the catskill mountains and route 30.
  8. They sure do not have any valid way of knowing how many deer in a area and or how many were taken in the hunting season. I have been at meeting with the DEC and have asked why they do not go to a online survey when you go to buy your tags. A short listing of questions on hunting, such as did you hunt last year, how many days did you hunt, what areas, did you see how many deer, did you take a deer, what sex, if a buck how many points. this could take less than 5 minutes and the info would give a n the spot review of the areas the hunter hunted. there has to be a better way, time for the DEC to go there heads out of the ____. Not just say lets change the archery season, and put more black power in there season or they have to kill just doe's or must take a doe first to get a buck tag...
  9. shotgun in 20 ga works well for rabbit, I use number 6 shot.
  10. any good places and tips on fishing for bass in Delaware county near Oneonta...plus when does bass open ????
  11. sent in this date, it does seem that if they the DEC can screw the archer they will. I have been a gun and bow hunter my total life ( 74 years young now ) I sure love the early start now of Oct 1, I have bad lungs COPD, and legs are about gone, so the early start in Oct give me the ability to hunt, when it gets cold below 40's, I just no longer can be out there, so the gun season is no longer for me. The bow season I want the chance to take a buck or doe. In my area, after this winter I am seeing just about a few doe's on my pasture areas. I would like the DEC to start being for the hunter and no the insurance agents or farmer that would love all deer gone. I sure wish the DEC would try to have a program were a hunter could get the ability to hunt local farms if there were reported crop damage, the DEC could pay for some of the amount of damage if damage is due to deer. West Va had a program like that, the farmers were listed by County area and each farmer could say how many could hunt per day and how many days he allowed hunting. A hunter would pay a extra $5 to a damage fund for the DEC to use. The program was a great one that I utilized when I lived down south.
  12. I am in the town of Franklin NY, about 13 mile from Oneonta NY...We have a small farm area that has 3 pasture area. I use to see in the early spring about 30 hen's feeding in the pasture for the first of the spring bugs...the last two year this has gone down to just 2 or 3 hens. I think the poor weather for the last two years has had a major impact as well as the coyotes that seem to feed on young fawn and young baby turkey.
  13. I sure try to see what is the issue in PA now ? I have been told there is some issue's that sure seem it is better not to do all this type of drilling. Clean water may be needed more than, cold hard cash they are now getting.
  14. In our area the town of Franklin the bird numbers are down due to weather and the coyote killing off the young birds...
  15. black earth belt area, lots of good food source and also not a lot of state hunting land...
  16. grow the middle class and a lot of this goes away. Hard for me to support there actions as there is not a finding of what caused the death the person. It may be poor response to a health issue with the person, if that is the final finding then the police officer or medical attendant should be held responsible. I do wish there would be more support to hold the people who break into stores and cause fire damage or damage or take things accountable..
  17. good post, if you do this on a monthly basis if you are shooting a lot of arrows the life of your string and cables will be increased by a lot of time. I have a bow that are 2007 Hoyt and still shoots like it new and the string / cables look like new as well. that due ongoing small things to keep it looking new and well oiled / wax .
  18. I have a pair to use around the yard in we grass times and they work fine, but for hunting I still use the old red wing leather boots for hunting, they fit like a good glove and I use bee wax on them to keep the water out. I do not do a lot of walking but even to walk a mile at 73 I like to feel I will not fall or trip over my own feet.
  19. the target bow is a Alpine Concord and it is 40 inches in length. I got another one this spring on a close out from Alpine and had it set up for 50 lb limbs and 29 inch draw. The limbs are black and the riser is red and black. My hunting outfit are: a Hoyt 2007 that is 34 inches long and is 50 to 60 lbs limbs and setup at 56 lbs and 29 inch draw. My newest bow is a 2014 PSE drive compound bow that is 30 inches long and setup at 56 lbs and 29 inch draw.
  20. wow great looking bow I hope it will take many great bucks for you and alsso win on the 3D events... good luck with it...
  21. at 73 I sure do not do a lot of stalking. I pre scout a hunting area and plan were I can use ground blinds out of natural material and I leave a plastic chair for me or other hunter to use. I have a tag affixed with my name that says handicap hunter, use this spot but do not move the chair. I have about 8 chairs out and in about 12 years have only had two taken. Could have been the state forest guys, as most of my hunting is on state hunting lands in the a North Pharsalia area of Chenago county. A little town area that is 13 miles from Norwich NY on route 23.I also no longer can use tree stands so my amount of deer being taken with a bow sure has gone down, but it does get more exiting as you are eye ball to eye ball with a deer on the ground. Most of the deer taken with the bow are under 20 yards and with the gun under 75 yards.
