  1. I used my Remington 1100 with slug barrel as were I hunt my shot is less that 75 yards.
  2. sure he is a friend. I hope he hit a tree branch. I would not ask him back for hunting.
  3. With my COPD, when it cold can only sit for about 3 hours, I heard two shots at first light, and that was it. Got into the house and my wife had made me a pot of chicken soup, had a bowl and sat by the fire. Looked out about 11 am and saw a small 4 point buck, walking in the open pasture. That was it for the first day
  4. my thanks to all that have served...for myself, I was in , Jan 1960 thru Oct 1963 in USAF, a 29150 Teletype crypto...
  5. Pick a spot and do not look at the horns. MY problem is after the shot, have to make sure I do not have a heart attack.
  6. 4O the bucks were running around yesterday and pushing the doe's. Had one in back of the house and my wife had 3 doe's being pushed off the hill as she went to town... We are in the town of Franklin and on Swart hollow road.
  7. 55 years of hunting with a bow, now 8 compound bow, 7 traditional bows, and must be over 200 arrows. The arrows are 6 doz made up and the rest are just shafts at this time. They are left over from when I had a small archery business.
  8. sunny days in the mid 50's or low 60's sure make up for it. Now if the bucks would start walking around in the day light I sure would be happy...
  9. at 74 years young, I can not hear worth a darn. Now this also is a plus , when a deer walks out and you see him, rather than hear a noise and turn and he see you first and runs away...
  10. being a old fart 74 and also handicapped with bad legs. I am on the ground now and leave out several plastic chairs in natural ground blinds on state woods. Each one is tagged with my name, phone number and also says use but do not move. So far in 10 years I have only one taken. I have had notes left on the chair as I used the chair on this date and took a doe or buck...so for the most part I still think a lot of our hunters will not take your stand or in my case a chair.
  11. they are calling for a warmer winter in the east this year. I sure hope so after last year.
  12. concur 100%, I even tie a feather to the compound bow cable so I can see if the wind changes...I use natural blinds like a downed tree, but if I use a purchased blind I leave the windows open and do not try to shoot thru the mesh.
  13. I use to stay till total dark, but now at 74 I walk out in the last light. I always have had a issue with finding a deer if you shoot at that last light. About 8 years ago I had a natural made blind of a downed maple tree on the ground and just at dark a 7 point buck walked into a scrape he had made that was within 20 yards of were I sat. I had a perfect shot and hit him great, I sat there and waited about 15 minutes, then walked to the spot, by then I had to use a flashlight to check for blood trail. I lost the trail within minutes, so I packed up when home and got a Coleman light and 2 buddies to help me look for the deer. We found the buck within 70 yards of were I hit him. But the Coleman was key to finding the deer. It gave off enough light so we could follow the blood trail. I sure do not want to leave a deer that been hit for the coyote can have a meal.
  14. I made up some info package on cross bows package and also that Dicks has a sale on crossbows ( $50 off ) for the guy down the road that wants to try the sport. MY thanks for the feedbacks and will give them to him as well. I am a 74 year old fart that still can draw and hunt with my compound bows or my traditional recurves...so no cross bow for me as yet. my thanks Bill
  15. Is there a cross package that you would recommend for a adult first time buyer of a crossbow, I have shot traditional and compound bows my whole life I am a senior in my 60's retired and would like to try a crossbow. I do not want to spend a lot of dollars to try out a new sport.
  16. A great place to have a bow tuned, and or buy a new one. They have been in the area for lots of years. Neil retired but the new owner is very good, plus lots of good help in the shop....
  17. I shoot all the time from 10 yards to 50 yards and do very well on 3D's and cardboard targets. But in the woods I keep all my shots to 25 yards and under, why, I am now to old for tree stands and on the ground most times there is a lot of wood in the way of the arrow, so I say pick a spot and keep your shots close.
  18. I had six next door to me and as the kits got bigger they started coming over to make a home in my land. SO far I got 5 and just 1 left and he never seems to come out for a clear shot. I check each day, got 2 with 20 gage shot gun and slugs, got 2 with 22 cal rifle, and 1 with 303 cal rifle.
  19. so true, in my case were I live I have to drive a hour to find state land to hunt, otherwise all you see is posters. so I drive back to North Pharsalia NY, two different areas each with over 7500 acres of state land to hunt.
  20. No, they are so costly from the mfg to any shop they do not carry them. you do better making your own with old feed sack, put in two pieces of cardboard, then fill to the top with used plastic bags from Walmart, close top with plastic tie's. and hang bag from 2 x 4 boards. The arrow will come out with out a problem and will not go thru... the cardboard in the bag is so you can put a plastic paper plate on the feed sack as a item to shoot at, or I just after have the bag ready , put a circle on the center of the bag with black spray paint.
