  1. Plus it's not to long, so guys like me can even finish it !
  2. Grampy, mentioned this book which is all I needed. Bought one, liked it so much I bought a bunch more, been giving them to hunting friends for their collections . I'll keep a couple to loan to guys who have issues recovering their deer. The guys who look an hour, can't tell what different blood tells them, and so on. The author has been on over 900 deer tracks/ recovery with dogs over 30 years . He shares what he's learned based on that .
  3. Tip.of the hat to Culvercreek ! One full day of hunting and there's a fair chance I'm sleeping in the next .....
  4. Years back I had a poster thing from Deer and Deerhunting mag. What was nice was you basically just checked off boxes and filled in a few notes, this was for kills. Hunter, distance of shot, weapon, tracking distance , method, area and so on . Was nice to look, back, over the years . Today I don't keep any records, other then then the DEC bowhunters log. Which also is easy and fun to,look back at. This year 23 hours on stand 25 deer sited , one buck killed. oh if I just saw off the skull plate I write date, weapon ,distance , location and so on ,on it .
  5. The edit function times out, not sure if that's the issue you're having .
  6. Keep in mind , people lie . The guy who shot his dad in the chest is not going to say, " I saw a guy walking out and put my scope on him to see who it was, and must have had my finger on the trigger", he's not going to say " I saw a bush move and figured there must be a deer in there and shot." They always say " thought it was a deer." The old timer who fell out of his stand, we won't ever know I guess, medical issue ? Slippery ? Stand broke ? When we respond for a person down one of the first things I ask is, " did you fall because of a trip/ slip or a medical condition , dizzy, ect . The group walking out where the one shot the woman walking out with them? Pretty sure they won't say they always walk with safety off and finger on trigger while muzzle is pointing at others . byw the " safety " is between your ears . Most of my handguns don't have an external safety you switch on or off . Follow the four basic gun safety rules .
  7. Broke all four of the " four gun safety rules." 1. Treat all guns as if they're loaded 2. Don't point muzzle at anything you'er not willing to destroy 3. Keep your bugger hook off the bang switch, until on target and ready to fire. 4. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it ,myself id like to see charges , and more then loss of license and a fine .
  8. Ditto , Cabin Fever. Tons of beds and tracks in my thicket just inside from crop fields . I have a couple stands just inside as well... can catch a buck moving in there early or late in the day . Saw 4 doe just walking around today from 3:00 - 4:00 at my friends land . Our freezer is overflowing , I'll,be out for big bucks only ,here and there , I like the late season , pressure drops way off , which is light on my land to begin with.
  9. 30 yard shot with .270 . 3 came out waited no buck, they slowed up, Bang.
  10. Flètch, I have the same craving, Although we're sticking it out to 11:00. Eating then moving over to buddy's spot . Slow here for deer but non stop geese.
  11. Few shots around here as well. Did not expect this rain though .... Good news is I now have my gun tag on me! Was cleaning / drying gear yesterday and noticed I did not have tag. It was in safe clipped to the hunting guide thing.

  13. Well I understand how you feel but I'm not sure it's selfish . Back in the day we sat the first and last hour and a half , the rest we drove every farm wood lot, creek bottom and swamp , everyone did. Like Doc said the deer were on their feet all day long. Now many of our drives could take an hour or more to set up and drive. The watchers would set up on one or two woods the deer would run to , often these spots were 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the driven woods. 10 to 12 guys setting up on two woods ,driving third , walks in to the woods of 300 yards across muddy fields . Sometimes we'd find a guy sitting in a tree stand in the driven woods. Should 12 guys who, just spent 1/2 hour setting up all back out because of one ? It happend to me more times then I can count ( me being the one in a tree stand) I'd either join them or wait for the deer to run by . ive shot a number of deer off others drives . I really miss those days . Not the walking in all, those muddy farm fields though .....
  14. As someone said , you also, need room in your boot . Two pair of thick socks unless you're buying the boots larger then you normally wear can be part of the issue . All socks are not created equal as well . Many like merino wool or wool blend , my favorite sock is Under Armour Coldgear boot sock . Even though I have issues with the company . The sock is warm and not bulky at all . Also I make sure my feet are dry before putting them on, if I shower first I use a blow drier on my feet ( yes my wife laughs ) . I found just toweling off ,my feet still had a lot of moisture that transferred to sock . When I return home I dry my boots out, remove insole pad and turn open end of boots towards gas fireplace . I know some who leave boots in truck/ trunk but they stuff crumpled newspaper or paper towels in them to,draw out moisture . Just found this, https://www.buzzfeed.com/alisoncaporimo/ways-to-keep-your-feet-warm-according-to-lumberjacks?utm_term=.prL5dw6qd#.qdzX4gk04
  15. I think they may be talking NYC specific . But the un SAFE act made permits renewable every, 5 years ? , however nobody has a plan in place to do it . Kinda like the background check for ammo, purchases .
  16. Article says " around " 4:40 not all hunters wear a Rolex like myself . Friend out west tells of a river by him where locals would hit a person over the head with a rock and push them into the river . They'd joke " take him fishing " as a way to murder someone there . Hey shoot a guy hunting maybe lose your license a couple years .
  17. Thanks everyone it's in the gun harvest thread . My back has been killing me for a month , just as it gets better , I get to drag another deer .... anyways her first deer , I'm so,glad it came togather for her . It's like those tv shows , I walk her to the stand ,she shoots it ,I come over gut it, and drag it out . Gotta go put a mint on her pillow .....
  18. So my daughter hunts a bit , while in college not so,much , now her working as a nurse and I as a Firefighter our schedules don't line up much . She did two hours opening day and and hour and a half tonight . Put her in a big ladder stand where I know that they move past late afternoon . I was in a ladder near by watching cut beam field . I look her way I see deer , does she though ? I'm pointing ... BANG ! Guess she does ! 8 doe were headed her way , 4 big 4 small maybe more she said . Dropped her in her tracks !
  19. Well a doe will work 7 or 8 came to her 25 yard shot. Dragging it out now .
  20. On and off light rain. Im fine but daughter who hunts a few hours a year does not have rain gear . All I want this gun season is one buck to pass her stand
  21. Heading down in an hour, guy who, hunts the woods north of me said he's seen deer every time out . Well ok then push some across the fields to,the south .....
  22. Almost always . There was a time for me a 4 inch L frame .357 which made concealment a challenge . Today there are so many choices that are easy to carry , makes it hard to find an excuse not to . At least my SW Sheild in 9mm , so flat and comfortable I leave it on at home all night . In a couple hours I'll have a .270 in my hands and that 9 on my belt .

Sorry gin and tonic today !
  24. Yes self imposed , and none of those are mine although one is of a member here. Our co op is loosely formed and trust me many around the area still kill, the first young buck they see. But I've hunted this piece close to 30 years and can say without a doubt I see more larger bucks then in " the good old days". we also don't freak out when someone , let's say kills one with some ground shrinkage . Kids, new hunters are welcome to kill young bucks on our ground too . We dont freak out when the guy next door kills a small one, we say nice job! We'll still get ours ..... its just deer hunting, everyone take a deep breath and enjoy the day with your friends and family. The member who's buck is on that wall ? Last year he hunted I think two half days. Years prior he hunted hard all bow and gun , all day sits . He said he didnt miss it . the Mrs needs cream cheese... Happy thanksgiving !
  25. Well here's where we are ....is post more but ,many don't want to show what we got .
