  1. It's cold and there is snow . The horror !!! Omg are they targeting wimps or what . They could always go hunt Texas, sit in a cabin up in the air and shoot a 170 class buck when it comes to the feeder at 3:00. My Nephew does but it costs up to ten grand ..,,, But no snow !! So it's better hunting .
  2. I wish I could edit above but it seems to time out. Our farm deer take in the mid 20's. My processor overflowing with deer. My taxidermist said it seems about average. A guy nearby took 8 off his 40 acres . My friend in 8j took several off his 40 acres . ( maybe we should all buy 40 acres....) My little corner of the deer woods seems fine . Either way the stock market goes up , then down. The Earth is warming , then cooling . Yankees win then lose We had record seasons.......
  3. I knew the Spangler family as I grew up down the street from them . 4 Webster FF were shot, two killed. One was also a Webster Poilce LT. One of the Volleys wounded also works for my Dept . Leroy is between Rochester and Buffalo, closer to Rochester though .
  4. Mine has a higher number this year as well, my doe on Tue. morning of opening week was numbered in the low 100's when I brought it in. He had a full crew working 12 hour days . The place near where I hunt was turning them away. Now did he have workers call in sick who knows. Our farms deer take right now is in the mid 20's , wait till we start driving ......,
  5. I agree it's more about less hunters and those that are hunting are sitting in stands all day , while the deer bed in cover all day . A Mexican stand off in the deer woods . This years nice weather made it easy for guys to sit longer , making it even worse for deer sightings .
  6. It's all relative, are deer numbers down ? Sure from all time highs! Guys talk about when the roads were lined with cars and campers, hunters up from Penn ,bars and hotels packed. Yep we had way more hunters and far fewer deer back then too, but guys hunted to hunt, because with far more hunters we killed way less deer then today. I started when it took 2 or 3 of us to,get one doe tag( party permit). Then the golden age of ny deer hunting came and guys saw 15 ,20 heck 30 deer a day, now seeing 6 is a bad day. I wonder how many here would hunt if they could take one doe between 3 guys and a buck in range made a good season.
  7. The issue is less hunters, and those that hunt sit all day while the deer bed in cover all day , in some sort of a Mexican stand off. Where I hunt 8h bow season gets better each year , tons of deer and lots of bucks. Opening day we all saw multiple bucks and doe and that continued on Sunday as well. By now they've caught on and just bed all day. One has to adapt , push them out, or sit in there , get on food sources mid day, I've seen many feeding mid day in fields. We don't hunt in gun like we used to that would be a waste of time . In the past we could just sit in the open woods and wait for them to run across the fields after getting pushed by guys in the other woods, that doesn't work anymore. Someone's getting deer, the processor near where I hunt was turning away deer and the guy I go to is way up for the year .
  8. Time will tell won't it . What he says seems to be true for many I guess, then again this outdoor writer and Hunter is out of his stand on opening day at 9:40 taking his trash to the dump...... Perhaps some sort of opening day Alice's Restaurant tradition for me him ? I heard less shots in my part of Canandaigua as well, but there was no shortage of deer on my spot and anyone could have got deer there that wanted . Well all but one. One guy I hunt with complains that there are no deer . He still tries to hunt like we did 15 or so years ago when each woods had a bunch of guys who started moving around after getting out of there stands at 9:00. That doesn't work, one has to adapt and I gotta head down now......
  9. The issue I've had a time or two is not taking a split second after they stop , to make sure my pin is where I want it to be. While following it as it moves it easy to be off target a bit, when it stops take the half second to make sure your pin has caught up and where it needs to be . Well after rereading you did that. It's a hard game we're playing , to my thinking you're doing it right don't sweat it to much , you'll score.
  10. I don't think I've ever shot a moving deer with my compound. I draw, follow and if they don't stop i BAAA. Seems to stop most of them. Many a time in my neighborhood I'll drive by deer stop and Baa out the window at them, In fact if I were to do it right now my Beagle would jump off my lap and look out the window for the deer as he's seen my do to so much.
  11. I'm luckier there's a place in Rochester that recycles one time use cameras , they have tractor trailer loads of AA batteries that are about 90% charged. They let us take 5 gallon buckets of them ,have to test them as about one in ten are dead. And yes people must still buy one time use cameras .....
  12. I've been going to Tony since he worked out of his old house off Bay road, I'm guessing 20 years now.I just dropped off 26 pounds to,be made into Slim sticks , pepperoni , hot dogs and more.... I'd say he's the best, you,pay for that but I'm glad to. He has all his products out for sampling in his shop , so stop,in and sample to your hearts content before ordering . Im having 10 pounds of meat made into slim sticks, Cheder cheese and jalapeño and cheese , that should yield 15 or so pounds of slim sticks..... Now I'm hungry ! Before driving "up" make sure you, know his drop off hours, they're on his web page.
  13. I'll be in the thick stuff this afternoon , nobodies been in there since last Monday afternoon . I'm just a bit downwind from an area the big ones stay in all day. Very hard to get much of a shot there but the payoff can be very good if you,do .
  14. Right now my edc for "non routine knife use" is a Spyderco Yojimbo II with cpm s30v . I often drop a Delica with zdp 189 steel in my back pocket for dally use. Its funny though I dress my deer with an Old Timer Stockman with carbon steel blades that I bought used for ten bucks .
  15. FYI , when I picked up a deer at my processor yesterday I asked him about deer numbers. He said he was up and just took in 15 deer that Procuts turned away . Don't know if they are caught up yet but it may be worth calling first. Btw my guy is 30 miles north of them.... So perhaps there are less doing it this year and those that are have their hands full.
  16. We are on the same schedule ..... Sunday afternoon thru Wed .
  17. I've had mine for about 20 years . Nice is to see you have some nice blades and even know the steel ! I'm a knife guy and even have been in Blade magazine a couple times and wrote a piece for Tactical Gear magazine on knives . Clean the Spyderco " sticks " with cleanser and a pad when they show dirt and they will cut like new again .
  18. Well let me be the first to ask , how/why did you get a 8H tag living where you do ? I hunt 8 H but private land, not sure of any state land and private would be hard to get on especially last minute .
  19. Nomad

    Cigar's

That's my question as well the Macanudo Portofino is a mild , pedestrian cigar .
  20. Why I hunt private land ? Well we own some of it but I mostly hunt wife's cousins farm . We manage , post and control what is taken and by what methods . I have many stands, huts, blinds and cameras and don't worry about any of them being taken or used . We bush hog trails and fields. I don't have to worry about someone else " being in my spot" Or " messing up my hunt", we get a couple dozen dmaps from the dec. By hunting it lightly and being smart, gun season can be a lot like bow where I hunt . None of that could I do on state land.
  21. Ya well he flys to NYC and Dallas on week ends go to,football games, he lives among the top country stars and his kids go to private schools with their children , $ not an issue . I'd like to be his driver when I retire..... But he's still an upstate red neck by heart and deeds.
  22. It's a BAR .308 , I don't know anymore other than the gun and scope ran 3k.... His 11 y/o daughter dropped this buck with it a few days ago too.
  23. Welcome ! I hunt 8h and some in your town, my buddy owns 40 acres off 31F .
  24. My nephew in Tennessee went out this AM to get some more deer, but had these all around him so he figured he might as well take them. He has a 1,500 acre farm that he is the only one allowed to hunt on , unbelievable deer but lots of these things.
  25. I'm guessing with today's political climate , nobody wants to "walk like an Egyptian" anymore ?
