LIVE From The Woods 2018 - Lets hear stories and see some pictures!
Otto replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Got my first bow buck tonight! Special thanks to The Real TC III for walking me thru the after shot routine! Kept me on the ground. Had a pretty easy 50 yard track and he expired 5 yards from the ATV trail. Had to cancel my wifes birthday dinner reservations for tonight, but she was cool with it! Tacks I did have pass thru, but did not find that arrow. I stopped looking for it when I found the deer! My daughter took better pics which I will post up when I can. Went for the afternoon today, had a spike jump out right under my stand at 5:45pm. He walked up the trail I came in on and was not spooked at all. Had the bow in hand, but I was not really interested in shooting him. He was standing at 20 yards and I noticed he was looking in a different direction from me. I looked that way and saw a small doe coming up to him. She was behind some thick bushes so I waited for her to come out so I could size her up better. Eventually the spike walked away and she disappeared too. Walking back I saw her again at 50 yards and we both froze, had a good few minute staring contest before she blew and ran off. Getting closer!- 10374 replies

I don’t have a recipie but someone made a “Pheasant au Vin” at a game dinner and it was delicious. Look up a recipie for Coq au Vin and substitute the pheasant for the chicken.

Lightly marinate it and cut into small strips. Use in a stir fry. I have also marinated them in a buffalo hot sauce marinade, then grilled them on a skewer over hot coals. Serve with a blue cheese dip. You can also pound them out and that helps, just be careful not to over cook. Sautéed in butter after an egg dip, seasoned flour dip.....use pan for making a gravy after.

Sat from 6:40 until about 9:30. I saw 2 does - one at sunrise, and another about 20 minutes after that. Both took same trail and about 50 yards from my stand.... getting closer! Check two cameras and found 1 of them had pictures of 2 different ATV’s trespassing. So instead of taking a nap this afternoon,, I need to go out and post that area again. Bastards!- 10374 replies

Went out tonight, beautiful night to sit. I had 5 deer come into the field that was behind me. They were in the far end of my scent cone, but they stuck around for 1/2 an hour or so. A spike and a 6 pointer were locking horns and pushing each other around. There was the other small spike I saw the other night, plus 2 does. Had to wait for them to clear before I could climb down. I hope they are still around tomorrow morning, I’ll be waiting for them! PREDATE - nice job on the turkey!- 10374 replies

Chef, looks like a great job! We leave ours whole like that too, you can always steak it, cut it into chinks or grind it if you want later on. But i see yours is tied up already so looks like a roast is in your future. I would just clean up a little more of the fat and silver skin now. A fish filet knife works rest in getting under that layer. We follow Grant Woods in butchering and he explains it very simply. That rump roast make great corned venison. Also really good smoked!

Shows available on Sportsman Guide and Amazon. Looks like a great blind for a bow hunter. I have a Barronett blind, OX5 model, it is really sturdy and well made. Big step up from Ameristep and others I have had. https://www.amazon.com/Barronett-Mike-Hunting-Blinds-Backwoods/dp/B076WVQF6W

I hunted this morning and saw nothing, What a diffenerence a few hours makes! I went this afternoon and only had 90 minutes of daylight but it was action packed! Walking in I had a deer 400 yards on opposite side of field from my stand. I waited until it went into the woods and then boogied to my stand. Got settled in and 15 minutes later I see a turkey, then I pick out the whole flock of 12-14 birds. 2 days too early! A few minutes later a deer walks out from the same place one had walked into earlier. Maybe the same deer? It looks like a doe, but I want to be sure so I glass it and its a spike with one 4” antler, and one 2” antler. Hoping and praying that something else is following this deer because he is headed my way. Comes to within 20 yards and sniffs around for a while, eats, sniffs at the licking branch and then finally hits where I had walked in earlier. We have a few staring contests, but I don’t move an inch and he seemed fine. He is cagey, but not freaked. Stays around for another 10 minutes or so and then slowly walks off. Nothing seen for a half hour or so. Finally pull my phone to check the time and it is 6:16. Sunset. I wait a few minutes and start to get ready to descend. Now I see 5 or 6 deer following the same path as the spike did. They take their sweet time coming to me, but now I am stuck in the tree until they finally leave after about a half an hour. Now it is pretty dark, but I can still see and while I am climbing down a 4 or 6 point buck walks within 30 yards of my ladder. I froze on the ladder. He is staring ahead but not at me and I hear a snort, but not from him. Finally he leaves, and I get on the ground and try to sneak away. I slowly make my way to the bottom of the hill and I jump 3 or 4 more deer. I am in the right spot, but the deer are all running late for me! Where were those doe 10 minutes earlier? Long post, but that was one of the most exciting 90 minute deer hunts I have ever had!- 10374 replies

I did hunt this morning, but never took my phone out of my pocket. Not a single deer seen on a beautiful morning! Stayed in the tree stand until 9:30 and then moved to a ground blind, mostly just to see how I liked the location. I didn't. Sat in it for 15 minutes and decided to move it 30 yards down the plot where I can actually see something coming my way. Brushed it in good again and I have a lot more confidence in the spot now. I will let it sit for a few days before I use it. Next chance for a hunt is this weekend. TF - I will add to the calls of "I would have shot that deer!" - but like you, I am glad to be out there and carrying a bow for the first time. Your deer (and hopefully mine) will come soon enough. I am hoping for a doe for my first one, but if a buck is in front of me then that will work too! Good luck to you all out there.- 10374 replies

I had a buck parade in the field in front of my house....11 deer total, 6 were bucks. At one point 2 pairs of the bucks were lightly sparring. They paid no attention to the does nearby. 2 of the bucks are definite shooters! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

I started using the Earth Scents wafers in a plastic bin too. I also added a box of baking soda in the bottom......wondering if that is a good idea?

Semi-live from the woods......from 8am this morning. Had a great time in the woods going after woodies. We ended up with 5, jumped 2 more on the way out but only got one of them. I know it's a great couple of days to be in a treestand, but we are going duck hunting again tomorrow too! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

Yea, but dried and smoked?????

Yes, you are correct about the San Marzano label. I’m not not sure what the exact variety is. I can find out. It does make a great sauce!
-
We have a 250 acre fruit and vegetable farm. We grow that variety specifically for selling as canning tomatoes. Because we don't get hot enough and long enough growing season in CNY it takes a few days longer after picking for it to get red throughout the whole tomato. I make homemade wine too, and that juice does come from Italy! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Here's a tip I picked up recently when I googled that exact question. Wear black, not camo. It really makes sense since the insides of the blind are black too. Also, take the time to really brush it in to hide any outline of the roof or edges. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Very sorry to hear about your Dad’s passing. My father was not a hunter, but we spent a lot of time in the woods cutting firewood. I still enjoy using his old chain saw, axe and splitting maul. They are treasured tools that remind me of all that hard work.

Just waxed a couple of days ago. Thanks!
