  1. ... so when I'm going 60mph down the busy expressway and "error code 999, please reboot" is shown on the car's display screen, what do I do??? I'd have to be heavily medicated & restrained to use a self-driving car! lol
  2. Yeah, progressively trimming off excess tape and bending frame to form-fit the roof of your mouth is key. If you don't do this, you're bound to be disappointed or at best very frustrated with diaphragm calls as a new user. Oh yeah, just in case you forgot, your mouth is literally an incubator for germs. Do whatever you need to do to keep it clean, even a simple water rinse or the preferred mouthwash method. Guessing there are 20 or more diaphragm call makes by simply looking at the BP turkey hunting catalog. Then each mfger has maybe 5-6 different varieties of mouth calls. Some are made or endorsed by champion callers, some made in garage shops and others may even be made in small production shops overseas... Pretty sure these calls are mainly low-tech, hand-made and not a lot of quality control is involved to insure each call or lot is the same as others and same style of call between different mfgers differ. Exception may be mfgers that sell a lot of calls, ie; Primos or Quaker Boy. Also, the same call makes a slightly different sound among different users. It's definitely mind-boggling all the unique varieties with 1, 2 or 3 diaphragms, "funky" cuts or materials and esp all the fancy names given to them!!! Just starting out - KISS, then evolve onto the trial 'n' error journey. Unfortunately you have no way of knowing how a specific diaphragm call will work for you until you take it out of the pkging, fit it and try it.
  3. How about the Spencer .56-56, the first practical rim-fire, cartridge based, large bore rifle. FYI - got a lot of use in a little place called Gettysburg, for all the wrong reasons.... Started whole evolution of modern rifles. Gotta be in the top-10 along with Ralphie's BB gun and possibly the flintlock or percussion cap rifle. If you're looking for a best favorite hunting or target rifle, many good options on the market today.
  4. Interesting article, but shouldn't have been a "shocker" for anyone! Definitely a political hot potato! Like some other states with the majority of legislators coming from urban areas, conservation isn't a priority.Even when funds are specifically allocated to the DEC, they can also be transfer back into the dreaded General Fund to make-up for shortfalls in other state departments/budgets. Vicious cycle!!!
  5. Always a pessimist..but I see nothing useful coming from this survey of homeowners that would promote better whitetail mgmt practices. Hell, if I were a homeowner with a couple of acres in the suburbs that deer were raising havoc with my landscape. I'd want them all gone as probably do the large homeowner's with 100s of acres of orchards. Conversely, if I were a hunter & homeowner in a rural area with numerous acres, I'd want more deer around!! I'm a homeowner on the edge of town, with a meager building lot and never see deer around where I live. My input would be to let the population grow, biased input due to my hunting within a few miles of my home and nothing to due with my opinion as a homeowner. Would these differing survey inputs be equal or weighted? Scary that this survey might establish another non-science based, multi year Whitetail Mgmt Plan put out by the DEC.
  6. When there's so many opposing opinions put forth by the so called experts (whitetail biologist) and even more from hunters experiences, it makes it difficult to state "this is what BBs do during the rut!". Can't call these deer different sub-species, but everyone should agree there's a difference in hunting for strictly BBs from LI, the ADKs, to WNY in the S-Tier or the Catskills. JMO, it's mainly habitat or food source driven behavior. Also these different hunting regions or even specific local pockets produce different definitions of a mature buck. Finally, whitetail deer are animals and behave differently from one another, just like humans. So there's no rule of thumb saying this is how to harvest a big mature buck per your own definition in the area you hunt. Lot of generalized "rules of engagement" that can make your success rate increase, but you really need to hunt in a way that makes your luck improve. Then there's patience...!!!
  7. Pretty neat when you can see an actual historical narrative with actors portraying those figures, as opposed to simply seeing or reading the facts! Watched the episode about Lewis & Clark, Sacajawea and Tecumseh, was pretty interesting.
  8. ^^^ you almost forgot #6- During the rut anything goes. You'll see BBs you've never gotten photos of all summer/fall and for sure never see the ones you'd been tracking for months. Granted, it does improve your chances on a BB you've seen for months or even semi-located his core home-base. BUT when the rut is on, a certain amount of this predictability or patterning vanishes. Hell, if it was easy, it wouldn't be fun anymore!
  9. Would be nice, but lets be real...! Those bills are currently embedded or tacked onto the budget. All legislators have their pet district projects within the annual budget and Xbow legislation is not in the top-10 of any lawmaker's priority list. So, the past few (3?) years the Xbow legislation has been plucked out of budget and lingered as a "stand-alone" bill w/o any resolution. Encouraging, yeah! Optimistically, wait 'n' see! YES, do contact your legislators and voice your opinion!!!
  10. Didn't you mean; be better prepared when the unexpected does happen, which it seems to always occur in a hunting situation! Not so sure you can anticipate the unexpected, would be nice though..!?! Some great advice already given, but there are a couple other things that might help. Stand location and practicing a semi-concealed draw technique. I'm not 35yo anymore, actually 2X that, so I've used these to help my minimal hold time at full draw to my advantage.
  11. Closer to home, maybe. NYC & Madison Sqr Garden, not so much! First show already sold out and very limited tickets available for 2nd one at ~$1000-$1500. One of my favorites, but wouldn't pay that $$ to meet him in person.
  12. Glad it's over with all the drama between the Bills & Tyrod during the last couple years! Ends an abusive relationship!! What the Browns do with the draft is anyone's guess...? Would it surprise anyone if they didn't pick any of the non-stellar top QB picks? Or maybe draft 2X QBs with their top 4 picks and deal one/both away..? When your at the bottom, only way for the Browns to go is up!??! Be interesting to see what happens to the Bills roster after the dust settles!
  13. Now we're talking, da' blues. Didn't renew my Sirius contract and regret not listening to B.B. King's Bluesville on channel #74.
  14. Probably 13-14yrs ago I bought a retail home-brew trail cam that was highly reviewed and the cost was comparable to the lesser quality Cuddebacks or the Scoutgards that were just introduced. Could have been a Wildview, IDK? Use to be able to buy all the parts or kits for a DIY'er cam. Not sure if that is still the case!?! Any more it's probably just a hobby project for those with some electronic background and the tinkering desire.
  15. Dumb question - If you're going through all the effort, why not just plant a normal apple tree? Wildlife won't care if you don't spray, prune, fertilize, thin or the fruit is visually less appealing. Granted, with a domestic apple tree you'll need to open the canopy more than is needed for wild growing trees. Wild crab-apple trees where I've hunted are super unpredictable as to producing apples every year. May be different in your locale!?!
  16. I used ethanol gas for years with numerous additives I experimented with. Always had to have small engine carb's rebuilt about every 2yrs. That's when it was suggested and I switched to 91 octane, non-ethanol w/o any additives other than Stabilt. Anyone that's gone through this is aware most shops do NOT rebuild cards now a days, they'll simply install a replacement. Which becomes a ~$100+ expense, cost of new carb plus labor with shop rate's of major service techs at ~$90/hr.
  17. To avoid any confusion, a cell phone's built-in camera has nothing to do with a service carrier, other than the capabilities of the free phones they are temping you with. BTW - You don't always need a major carrier to be using a decent smart phone, a lot have the BYOP option. You just need to be completely aware of what you're buying; if it's unlocked, tower system it's attached to, refurbished or an overstocked couple of generations old phone, if it's on your perspective carriers approved list, etc.
  18. Sorry dude, you don't have the right assets - money &/or fame! Nice try!!!!
  19. That race she actually needs to qualify for, no given or token starting spot. Did I miss it, didn't see Aaron Rogers hanging around her garage/pit...!?! I really wanted to see her succeed, so no offense meant for Danica or her fans, but she was retained because she brought in sponsorship funding. So she was kept around until it dried up. When a major sponsor spends ~$35M/yr, it wants to see their advertising efforts displayed on TV, preferably in the top 10 finishers and not among the causalities.
  20. As you found out, ethanol isn't just a 2-cycle engine issue. Anything that only runs sporadically needs ethanol with Stabilt, if not non-ethanol gas w/Stabilt. I use 91 octane non-ethanol in everything from an ATV down to mowers, chainsaws and trimmers, with Stabilt added. Basically small engines that sit with gas in them for extended periods. Definitely a band-aid fix for a bigger issue... Small engine repair shops love it..!!!
  21. ^^ and when she returns, it'll be because she wants to, not because she was coerced into continuing something she dreads. Need to walk the grey area between coercion and encouragement. Oh yeah, with a lot of patience!!! Great advice from other's about encouraging "stick-to-it-ness", but dropping a hobby doesn't seem like that big a deal to me either. Hell, I tried bowling & golf, quit both after too many frustrating hours/days/months and being humiliated. My advice is to you, dad. Is tournament archery something you like and want her to like also, merely because it's something you two can do together? Take a couple steps back and view this from all angles &/or sides! The father-daughter relationship is much more complicated and fragile than father-son bonding.
  22. If you need a plan with lots of data on multiple phones, that's one thing. No offense, but those of you (like myself!) that don't get online with your phone, only have a smart phone for the better camera, etc - JMO, you're wasting your money paying for a major cell phone provider's plan, or even a TracFone type plan! Not to mention the cost of keeping up to date on the latest cell phone... IE; new Iphone & Samsung are ~$900/$1000, add that to your monthly bill. Crazy!
  23. Agree with everyone else. When you push, they often get pushed away.
  24. Believe there is some shared tower usage by most carriers...? Isn't your specific phone linked to a tower (network) system, but can be change only via SIMM chip within the phone??? IDK..! I'm not a big fan of being on social media, connected to the web, playing online games, etc with my cell phone - so my data/air time usage is minimal. Which makes my Samsung S5, linked to Verizon towers and Tracfone's ~$125/YR smart phone pay-as-you-go plan ideal for me. Can add on minutes or data as you need if necessary and unused time/data is carried over. Maybe cheapest, but not for everyone!! Had an employer offer to give me a cell phone, once. No thanks, I'll just answer my phone when I want w/o any obligations.
  25. ^^^ Yeah, definitely a point no one wants to address. Currently, even if the people who opened their home to this kid or social media followers saw some disturbing activity - nothing legally could have done about it! Suppose law enforcement went in and confiscated his guns per behavioral tips given, there'd be an unlawful seizure lawsuit filed. Something wrong with today's society, in general. There seems to be absolutely no regard for another person's life. Agree with Robhuntandfish 1000%! This line in the sand both sides of the gun issue have drawn needs to be looked at with open minds. JMO, the ATF needs to propose gun control legislation that would supersede all state's laws. Has to be some common ground or compromise between how (as an example only) Texas vs Calif state gun laws differ. BTW - I own long & hand guns, but I just can't continue to keep the blinders on about what's going on in the US currently. Unfortunate situation is there are no US legislators that think clearly about this issue without some prejudice or hidden agenda, on either side of the issue.
