To each their own!! I just don't see the advantage of having a single pin, adjustable sight vs a multi pin fixed sight. Just me, but last thing I want to be doing during the "moment of truth" is making a lot of unnecessary movements using a rangefinder, adjusting my sights, ect. My be why I'm not into all the latest 'n' greatest tech gadgets or marketing gizmos. My 2¢ ... whatever gives you more confidence!

Do deer migrate and if so how far will they travel
nyslowhand replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Remember that yarding in the past too, but don't see that as much any more though! JMO, yarding isn't the same as migration. When whitetails are searching for available food sources, esp in winter, they may wander away from their fair weather home-bases somewhat, but not sure you can call it a migration. Nothing like their cousins the elk that move miles from mountain tops to valleys in a seasonal search for food sources or escaping brutal weather conditions.. Although I do try to justify the October lull on the deer moving south along with the geese I watch flying overhead! -
BTW - There may be a major difference between a Yankee, flat-lander being in good shape and being capable of enduring those Rocky Mtn, high altitude treks!??! You've got a great plan and like you mentioned.. the sooner the better before you regret not doing it!

Wasn't it 1st introduced in those higher end over/under skeet & clay shotguns to disperse heat better? Then it was found to be a better sighting/aiming method than the plain barrels with only a notch & bead and glossy barrel between. Or vise-versa? Somewhat associated with mfg'ering process of ease of making a thinner barrel and adding a rib vs turning, boring & honing a much thicker & heavier barrel. For hunting shotguns nowadays, it's become a personal preference.

Can't wait for this to air on regular TV or on the web, since I'm not a Showtime subscriber. Always been a big fan of his music all the way back into the 1960s. Not so much for his drug habit and behavioral issues during that era of his life. Have to give him a lot of credit for allowing all his dirty laundry to be aired! Phenomenal music career! Only geriatric rock star I'd still pay to see perform.

Not sure of your dad's age, but when I was in my late 50s/early 60s I was thinking of an elk hunt. Never followed-up on that dream, but had really considered New Mexico, due mainly to the "milder" terrain. My theory was NOT to be able to drive up, shot an elk, load it into an ATV/truck and be done, just did NOT want some test of my endurance while still being able to enjoy the experience. FYI - Some of those Colorado hunts look physically brutal demanding!!! IRC, when I was researching I'd seen some states &/or zones within states required guides. Even saw some situations where guides actually had tags they had available for customers. This was 10-12yrs ago, so not sure if this is still the case??

Like others have said, it all depends on the habitat you hunt. Makes no sense to zero-in for sniper range shots IF your max possible shot is within 100yrds - regardless of the rifle's caliber, bullet loads, etc. IF you mainly hunt big, open woods, edges of large agr fields, out west, etc - that's another story. If you hunt where shot opportunities range from ~30 to 150yrds, probably should decide on what is most likely shot distance and plan on some +/- compensation. I don't have the luxury of having different bow and rifle stands, so I hunt mainly from my bow hunting stands even during the SZ regular season. So my ML and even when I could upgrade to a 270, both were zeroed-in at 80yrds. BUT, what works for me may not be ideal for you, so use your own strategy!

Why isn't the Superbowl on sat night?
nyslowhand replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
^^^ So what's the alternative, college sports? That's also getting a little ridiculous with the devious recruiting habits, one-n-done athletes, alumni pressure, unionized &/or paid college athletes and not to mention the bad behavior of some of the 18-20yo players kids..... And then there's some of the MLB & NFL HOF nominees!?! Guessing we're both preaching to the choir..! lol -
I'm going through this cable-cutting exercise right now. It really depends on your TV, newer smart TVs can be linked to streaming services solely via a "hardwired" or WiFi internet connection. Depending on your TV's age, model, capabilities - may need a Roku, FireStick, etc, but IRC still need some sort of internet connection. Also have watched a lot of YouTube type how-to videos & they tend to skip or gloss over some of these minor details. Not yet aware of all the ins/outs of the streaming services, but a majority of them cost $/mo. Gotta be a cheaper alternative to my ~$100+/mo, basic TWC/Spectrum gouging!!??!! JMO, Dish &/or DirectTV are NOT alternatives once you get beyond their initial, enticing sign-up plan contract period. Most $$ pretty much double, putting them closer to the $70-100 mark, again. Grrrr... This is one of my pet-peeves along with the outrageous cost of internet & cell phone service plans! Deep breath, relax.....

The signs were basically NYS advertising billboards and NOT pointing or directing to any specific tourism sites. IRC, the total bill of ~$8m included ~$6 to install. Is that what it'll cost to take down also? Dumb-a$$ politicians!!!!!!!

Last summer I had my small kitchen, adjoining laundry room and down the steps to rear entrance done with vinyl wood-look planks. Went in easy, little hard on cutting tools, has held up great and best of all it's waterproof, not water resistant. Flooring I used was much thicker than most vinyls and didn't need padding, but it should hold up great and it was better at covering the existing sub-flooring. BTW - Most vinyl planks are pretty thin & flexible, so take that for what it's worth. Anyways... in my research, Lumber Liquidator's products had great reviews as good, lower cost alternatives to the $2-3/ft name brands. The installer is an entirely different issue, esp if it were one suggested by the seller..!

... and to think in 2020 we'll share him with the entire US. Think it's bad now...

Dude, you've gone way beyond cool with this one!! Super awesome!!

Why isn't the Superbowl on sat night?
nyslowhand replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
My vote is for you!! But you do realize there would only be enough eligible players to form a 4 team NFL league if your rules were implemented. Kidding..!??! -
So this is why we haven't been hearing much from you, witness protection!

Yeah, IRC read something on the internet about Bigfoots (Bigfeet??) being trapped & relocated into NYS to control deer overpopulation areas. Or maybe it was mentioned on one of those Bigfoot hunting reality shows on TV. Must be true!, right??! Pygmy might be interested in a Bigfoot cougar, if there were such a thing! Last call, lights out, you know you're game!?! Sorry dude, couldn't resist.

What bewilders me is these are exact same bills introduced the past ~3yrs and they go thru the same cumbersome legislative process each time. Okay, I get the process is needed, but... Bills are introduced, referred to Enviro Cons sub-committee, submitted for assembly/senate vote, and onto Gov for approval/veto. Betting they will, again be stalled in that Envro Cons sub-committee. It's not like that sub-committee is looking at something new...WTH!?! They passed identical bills thru last year, so what's the big deal, again? Just pass it thru the sub-committee onto the legislators with their constituent's input for yea/nay vote!!! Last time that sub-committee actually revamped a Xbow bill is what we're living with now. Political process at its' worst, FUBAR.

I wonder why this "stalled" at Andy's desk?
nyslowhand replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
Me either, but here goes. The residents of the states pay to have these elk (and moose) populations re-established, so I'm for NO non-resident tags if it comes to that! Selfish, maybe! "F" the tourism $$. -
BTW, just to add more confusion here's yet another name... Bosch. Little heavy and not super ergonomic. Not one I'd be toting on the roof or up a ladder. Can drive screws into most anything. Mine is ~15yo and not a single complaint for homeowner's use. Torque adj, 2X speed, reversible, keyless chuck, 2nd battery, charger, case.

nyslowhand replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
Last I knew both Pa & Ky elk reintroduced into those states were free-ranging herds. May be wrong..!?! ... and our czar only looks at hunting and fishing opportunities as tourism dollars. -
My little slice of heaven
nyslowhand replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Congrats! Nothing like being able to go out the back door to hunt! Not to rain on your parade, but... Know you'll do this, but I'd be getting chummy with the adjacent property owners this spring/summer and hinting at retrieval rights, at least. You have some career skill-sets that might be worthy of bartering. Lets assume your purchase of this piece of heaven does NOT come with any unknown historical hunting access issues!!! In the grand scheme of things, 15ac is not a huge property, meaning a lethally wounded deer running onto an adjacent property wouldn't be unheard of. Just my 2¢.... Enjoy!! -
FYI - Rope cocking devices are not a one size fits all! The length of the rope (pull) has to be adjusted for each shooters height, build &/or arm length and even physical limitations. Wouldn't be unreasonable to have numerous rope cockers for different people using the same Xbow. Just have to keep then ID'ed or separated somehow!

The obvious 1st sign of spring would be the robins or flocks of geese returning. Officially, on the calendar it's March 20th, but we all know that's not true! Personally think the beginning of April is when I see the winter weather pattern breaking and more encouraging, widespread signs of spring. Like scouting for turkeys or the dreaded return of the pesky bugs/flies.

He had a lawsuit brought against him for trespassing & filming on a (elk?) protected area by a PETA-type organization. Paid a substantial fine, IRC ~$300k! Another accusation was he staged the filming of two tame mountain lions chasing an also tame deer/elk over a cliff. Not to discredit the great, early wildlife videography he made available, but not a lot different than all the staged hunting shows on TV now!??!
-
If you read his bio, you'll see he's a pretty weird unique individual in his beliefs and activism! Bizarre and hypocritical... BTW - His gun control rant came during an interview with a mid-east news agency during the filming of Taken 3 in Istanbul, shortly after the French Charlie Hebdo terrorism killings. He was asked about that disaster, but decided to include the US and our Constitution in his tirade. Idiot!
