  1. Honestly, you are making a number of assumptions with your statement. There probably are some that take shots that they shouldn't, but there are others who typically don't. I don't know any hunter with a good bit of experience under his belt who hasn't blown a shot at least a time or two in their careers. Maybe this was one of them??? It isn't pretty, but $#!+ can happen to the best of us.
  2. Yes, so this would give each landowner an additional buck tag no matter how much land they own. But would they get any more buck tags than that? I'm not seeing that. Surely isn't anything like someone getting an ADDITIONAL buck tag for every 50 acres they own. In that scenario someone like Buckmaster with 300 acres would be given 6 buck tags, which I would not be in favor of.
  3. Where does it say that you can get an extra buck tag for every 50 acres or any acres? From what I see you get 1 general tag, which I guess would be the buck tag, and 3 antlerless tags. Says nothing about more buck tags than that. Even in NYS a landowner could get landowner preference and draw a doe tag in areas where other non-landowners might have a difficult time drawing one. Giving out buck tags for every 50 acres would be a complete game changer in so many ways in my opinion. $#!+, many of us can't even draw a doe tag and now people want additional buck tags for every 50 acres???
  4. You are saying that a property owner/leaser should get an extra buck tag for every 50 acres of land? What state allows something like that? I've never heard of any? In a number of western states even residents have to go thru a draw for a buck tag, so I'd like to know which are the states that give out buck tags per acres of land??
  5. The ONLY fair way would be to not allow bowhunters to use their bow tag on a doe. Why should they be the only ones allowed to take a doe in a region where the DEC feels that few should be taken? Others have suggested this in the past on other threads, but why not have doe tags be on a draw for everyone in these regions, and not just for the gun hunters? If you burn the doe tag during bow season, you won't have one during the gun season. Simple solution that should please everyone.
  6. To HELL with that idea!! In the past 10 or so years in the Catskill region where I've generally hunted, I've seen antler restrictions implemented, you have slim chances of drawing a doe permit and now they want to shorten the gun season? Maybe someone can give me a good reason why I should even buy a hunting license at all? And please, I don't want anyone giving me the BS that I should go out and start bowhunting where I could use the tag on a doe. Why should only bowhunters get the privilege of taking a doe? And of course shortening the gun season would also probably benefit bowhunters more than anyone else. Sure as hell ain't benefiting the gun hunters!!
  7. If you do get to see him, you better not miss him then. Instead of you mounting him, he may try mounting you! LOL
  8. Congrats to your Dad, Biz!! Nice deer. Now if he was on the other side of the river in the Catskills, he wouldn't have been able to shoot at this one because of antler restrictions. This proves what a joke AR's are since your Dad's 4 point has nicer sized antlers than some 6 or 8 pointers that hunters ARE allowed to shoot at.
  9. I don't know how many deer you have shot, but I WILL guarantee you that if you shoot another 100 thru both lungs with a rifle, 99% of them won't go as far as 200 yards. The caliber of the gun probably won't matter, neither. So the one that did go 200 yards on you is a very rare bird.
  10. I think some of you are over thinking this blood trail issue here. So are some of you saying that people shouldn't hunt with proven deer calibers like a .270 and .30-06 because deer don't bleed enough shot with these rounds? What type of blood trails are you expecting? The only time you will be following blood is if you made a poor shot. I know $#!+ can happen, but the goal should be to make a hit where you won't be needing to trail blood. If you hit a deer where you are supposed to behind the shoulder in the vitals, he may run a bit, but in the majority of cases he will drop within sight and there will be absolutely no need to trail blood. Exactly how much blood would you expect if a deer dashes for 50-100 yards after a mortal hit and then drops dead? The deers movement alone may restrict blood from flowing out. And a deer can cover 50-100 yards awful quick! In my opinion, if you hit the deer where you are supposed to, the amount of blood that will pour out of it won't matter in the least.
  11. I love it! Many say that it's all about the antlers, but guess what? It isn't! I think the sooner a hunter realizes this, the more enjoyment they will get out of hunting.
  12. He's checking into the hospital tomorrow for gastric bypass surgery.
  13. LOL. I will have the funeral home on standby when I finally do retire if I live to see the day. I bet it won't be more than a week after my retirement before they are stretching me out in that aromatic pine box! I've seen it happen to a number of people, too. I guess some of us are not meant to have a life without working like slaves!
  14. Having an excited, inexperienced young kid firing at their first deer with a bow is a mess just waiting to happen. I agree with you 100% that NYS has it all wrong.
  15. I think if this guy with a shotgun sights in dead on at 100 yards with a normal duplex style scope he doesn't need to worry about any fancy charts or math. He'll kill any deer walking from 0-150 yards if he does his part in holding the gun steady. If he takes shots from 150-200 yards all he needs is a bit of holdover. I don't think you need BDC reticles or fancy trajectory charts to put down deer within normal shooting ranges. It's all overthinking in my honest opinion.
  16. I did not notice that you said that the 3.5-10 was a VX3. Generally, from what I've seen the price difference between the VXII and VX3 is quite a bit more than $100, so I guess if you can get a VX3 for only $100 more it would be a great deal. I'm sure there might be a step up in the quality of the glass with the VX3, but from my experience there are no flies on the VXII neither. It is a simple scope that works and holds it's zero better than any other I've had experience with. As you probably know quality mounts are half the battle or more in keeping a scope in zero. I see people buying good quality scopes only to connect them to their rifles with cheap mounts, many made of aluminum. If you want stability, you need steel mounts, and then even cheaper scopes will work pretty good for you.
  17. Simple answer. NO, not worth the extra $100 for 1X more in magnification and the added weight. I've had a VXII 3X-9X on my gun for 30 years and I don't remember the last time I had to re-sight the gun. They typically hold zero better than any scope I've had experience with.
  18. I nominate this group to replace Trump's current cabinet. I'd think you guys would probably have less chance of getting indicted, arrested, etc. At least I hope that would be the case. LOL
  19. I take my hat off to Moog and anyone who is kind enough to share their hunting spots with others. Not too many people out there anymore like that, so it's extra nice to see things like this!!
  20. I would bet that our time to be WITH God will come sooner than meeting up with a slob like that. LOL
  21. Is that the bride of Sasquatch in that first pic? LOL
  22. Are you talking about typical or non-typical scores here? I am no expert on record book bucks and could really care less about antler scores, but isn't the world record typical something like 213" or so? If that's the case, I would HIGHLY doubt there are too many "typical" 200 inchers roaming around ANYWHERE in NYS. Hell, there aren't too many of those even in the well known trophy states if the world record is 213. Sure, I guess one could technically show up anywhere in North America, but saying that one could grow one here in NYS is still a far fetched dream in my opinion.
  23. Biz, what is that in the above photo to the right of the trees in the middle? It looks like a small ladder with something on top of it. Someone might think you have a feeder going there! LOL
