He's checking into the hospital tomorrow for gastric bypass surgery.

LOL. I will have the funeral home on standby when I finally do retire if I live to see the day. I bet it won't be more than a week after my retirement before they are stretching me out in that aromatic pine box! I've seen it happen to a number of people, too. I guess some of us are not meant to have a life without working like slaves!

Having an excited, inexperienced young kid firing at their first deer with a bow is a mess just waiting to happen. I agree with you 100% that NYS has it all wrong.

I think if this guy with a shotgun sights in dead on at 100 yards with a normal duplex style scope he doesn't need to worry about any fancy charts or math. He'll kill any deer walking from 0-150 yards if he does his part in holding the gun steady. If he takes shots from 150-200 yards all he needs is a bit of holdover. I don't think you need BDC reticles or fancy trajectory charts to put down deer within normal shooting ranges. It's all overthinking in my honest opinion.

VX-3I 3.5-10x40 Vs VX-2 3-9x40?
steve863 replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I did not notice that you said that the 3.5-10 was a VX3. Generally, from what I've seen the price difference between the VXII and VX3 is quite a bit more than $100, so I guess if you can get a VX3 for only $100 more it would be a great deal. I'm sure there might be a step up in the quality of the glass with the VX3, but from my experience there are no flies on the VXII neither. It is a simple scope that works and holds it's zero better than any other I've had experience with. As you probably know quality mounts are half the battle or more in keeping a scope in zero. I see people buying good quality scopes only to connect them to their rifles with cheap mounts, many made of aluminum. If you want stability, you need steel mounts, and then even cheaper scopes will work pretty good for you. -
VX-3I 3.5-10x40 Vs VX-2 3-9x40?
steve863 replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Simple answer. NO, not worth the extra $100 for 1X more in magnification and the added weight. I've had a VXII 3X-9X on my gun for 30 years and I don't remember the last time I had to re-sight the gun. They typically hold zero better than any scope I've had experience with. -
I nominate this group to replace Trump's current cabinet. I'd think you guys would probably have less chance of getting indicted, arrested, etc. At least I hope that would be the case. LOL

I take my hat off to Moog and anyone who is kind enough to share their hunting spots with others. Not too many people out there anymore like that, so it's extra nice to see things like this!!

From the mind of an eight year old. Biggest deer in NY

I would bet that our time to be WITH God will come sooner than meeting up with a slob like that. LOL -
Is that the bride of Sasquatch in that first pic? LOL

From the mind of an eight year old. Biggest deer in NY

Are you talking about typical or non-typical scores here? I am no expert on record book bucks and could really care less about antler scores, but isn't the world record typical something like 213" or so? If that's the case, I would HIGHLY doubt there are too many "typical" 200 inchers roaming around ANYWHERE in NYS. Hell, there aren't too many of those even in the well known trophy states if the world record is 213. Sure, I guess one could technically show up anywhere in North America, but saying that one could grow one here in NYS is still a far fetched dream in my opinion. -
Biz, what is that in the above photo to the right of the trees in the middle? It looks like a small ladder with something on top of it. Someone might think you have a feeder going there! LOL

Oh man, I'd feel terrible too. I don't know, that looks like it will leave a scar. I got cracked on the forehead a time or two by my .338 win mag, but never drew blood. I guess it pays to be hardheaded for some things!. LOL

I know the Savage's are known as great shooting guns, and the looks of a gun are certainly not everything, but the bolt handle on the Savage rifles looks like a dog's leg ready to be lifted to do it's thing. LOL Plus, the entire bolt has like 1000 parts to it compared to most other bolts out there. The Savage's will definitely do the trick, but they'll never win any beauty contests. -
I've been following youtube videos by Randy Newberg. He hunts public land out west. I find his videos very well done. He videos all segments of the hunt including the skinning and processing of the animal. He seems very down to earth and has a good sense of humor. Lately he's had day by day video coverage of his hunts. It's not the typical hunting video where you see a weeks hunting condensed into a 20 minutes. Newberg's videos make you feel like you are out there hunting right along side of him. Also, highly recommend some neat videos by these guys in Scotland. Fantastic videography on these!

Why doesn't one of you brave souls go hunt with a bow and crossbow, or bow and shotgun on some public land where you know that DEC officers frequent and report back your findings? If you get arrested we here on the forum will start a collection and promise to bail you out. At least we would know what the correct answer here is once and for all.

Family room remodel
steve863 replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
It boggles the mind how they seem to have the last say on everything. We pretty much sign our lives away when we get married. Lately, if any guy tells me he's getting married I go look for a tape measure to measure his neck for the ball and chain they'll be hooking on. If he has a size 16 neck, the steel collar that will get put on will be a 14. Nice and snug so it makes it tough for the poor sucker to even breath. LOL -

Looks awesome!!! The only thing missing is a moose head over the fireplace. -
Are VG 10, AUS 8, and D2 carbon steels? I know the majority of hunting knives these days, especially the less expensive ones are made of stainless steel, but from my experience a carbon steel knife will hold its edge way better than any stainless steel knife I ever had. Not to say there aren't some high quality stainless steel knives out there that wouldn't hold their edge just as good, but I have a couple German carbon steel knives probably 50 years old that are unbelievable when it comes to holding their edge. You can saw tree limbs with them and they are no worse for wear. Try that with moderately priced stainless steel knives. You'll screw up the edge on it in no time. Also, I'm with the others who would never be caught dead with a replaceable blade hunting knife. I don't care how sharp they are, those things are toys compared to a real hunting knife.

Why not call it what the Italians call it? I'm not Italian, but people sometimes think I am, so I've learned a thing or two from them over the years. I sure don't look like an Italian, but I guess it may be my name that has them fooled. LOL https://www.thespruce.com/pasta-sauce-gravy-or-ragu-2019557

I would have to agree. Allowing hunters to hunt closer to homes was probably an incident/accident just waiting to happen. Some bone head hunter out there was bound to screw it up for everyone. This is one reason I'd never hunt in a suburban environment where there are many houses close by. I don't care how many deer one could kill there. I just don't want to be too near to the rest of humanity when I am hunting. I prefer to be out of sight of as much as possible. What the rest of humanity doesn't see won't hurt them or us.

I hereby nominate the above three posters to organize the deer hunt on Staten Island. They are too be fully responsible for all the logistics, red tape and BS that will surround such a hunt. They will also act as the hunters public relations representatives for this hunt in the biggest, most left-wing media market in the US. They will also act as lobbyists within the NYC council to make sure that such a hunt does not get blocked by the majority liberal politicians in NYC. This letter is hereby forwarded to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Good luck boys, you will need it!!

Bowhunting has never been very effective in significantly reducing deer populations where there are too many. Staten Island is nothing like Long Island or Princeton. Long Island has too many deer for sharpshooters to ever kill them all. It's too late on LI. You can kill all the deer in Princeton, and more will come in from surrounding areas since it's not and Island. Staten Island still has a small enough deer population for sharpshooters to be effective. They can most certainly reduce the herd significantly if not completely. And even if you had the odd deer swim over to Staten Island from NJ, it would take years for them re-establish. Yes, sharpshooters might cost some money, but it would be the quickest solution to the problem. Having bowhunters try to kill them off would take forever in comparison, and simply be a media circus hunters EVERYWHERE don't need.

Biz, would you go with Aaron Judge's picture on that??
