I think I'm in trouble...
Merlot replied to Merlot's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Maybe I'll strip the feathers for fly tying....wait a minute...I have an idea. Perhaps the Hitler rant clip can be adapted to my owl dilemma. I can see it now, Hitler in his bunker, going over the map on where to hunt crows, then being told by his aides that possessing an protected species is against the law. Then Hitler asks those in the bunker to leave if they do not want responsibility for the owl....at least I came up with some added material for a rant. The deer permit one was brilliant. -
I recently moved my parents into nursing care and started cleaning out the house. I re-discovered a mounted Great Horned owl in his basement. upon seeing the owl, I recall seeing it around the house when I was little...we're going back 50-55 years. I couldn't see just throwing it out because the owl is in great shape. I took it home and planned on donating the owl to a local DEC office. I double checked the DEC site and protected bird site and find that possession is a very serious state and federal offence. To protect myself, I am considering taking it to camp and disposing of the owl....hate to do it, but I do not need a police record, like the fellow caught with protected birds while reading the New York Outdoor news. I know my father and his uncle hunted crows after WW II and maybe back then, having a stuffed Owl was no big deal...sure is now. The lighter fluid, wood and owl are ready for ignition...Wondered what the group thinks I should do. I vote burn.

There are bad guys and there are good guys in this world. I just hope that we, the good guys, have more toys than the bad guys and we whoop their butts.

Read like a Hitler rant.

from Sprague's, south on rt 305 into Portville, right turn onto Rt 417...5 miles to Olean...then right turn onto Rt 16( Union St) . 200 feet on the right. Park in the back. Can't miss it. For dessert, order Graham cracker cream pie...

Sprague's and Beef 'n Barrel in the Olean Portville area. Rarely disappointed at those two locations.

Nice buck...hope you get a crack at him this fall.

I'm going to check crossbows out at Belmont Archery and see what the fuss is all about.

The neighbor who called the State Police probably is an avid golfer, who just wanted to watch the big golf tournament on the tube Sunday afternoon. You just disturbed her karma a little.

Perfect time frame for me. Cannot wait.

Finally doing it.....moving to Rochester area
Merlot replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in General Chit Chat
Good luck with the move. We may be moving soon from Cattaraugus County to north of Batavia (Elba) to join family. -
If legal, OK by me, but keep the pictures private amongst the group responsible. Don't post this stuff. Spreading this stuff around gives hunters/hunting a bad name.

Hurry !! Someone tell cuomo to ban assault knives

Don't forget the plastic butter knives also. Sick world we live in. -
My first bow was a Fred Bear Kodiak Hunter recurve. I stuck with it, trying to be traditional in pursuing deer. A hunting buddy picked up a Jennings compound bow in the late 70's and tried to get me to change. I finally did change to compound in the early 80's...peer pressure I guess. Back then, I just had my bow/arrows, camo, quiver, knife, and drag rope....just the basics when we went out...traditional in my view. Now we cannot be without all our gadgets stuffed into oversized backpacks. Still fun to get out and if I have to switch to something a bit more radical like a cross bow...so be it. Better to be out with friends and enjoy the outdoors than anything else. Sit by the fire after hunting with a cocktail or two, then grill up dinner, sit back in the camp easy chairs and tell stories while sipping a wine....my kind of tradition. Dang, cannot wait for deer season.
-
...And by the looks of your picture, it would have been a perfect weather weekend to enjoy camp...dang.
-
Nope, not too heavy. Just offering an opinion. I hope to continue using my compound bow for as long as I can. No need for special handicapped status. Whenever you want to shoot a friendly competition, let me know...May be good for you to get away from your computer for a bit.

Guess I was wrong about the bickering going away....

The bison and other creatures are moving in unusual numbers out of the area where tremors are apparently occurring within the park. Some say animals can sense something bad and instinctively move. Hope the Yellowstone caldera doesn't blow its stack and plunge the world into eternal darkness/arctic mode. That will put off my purchase of new archery equipment...Damn. And we just got the x-bow issue settled.
-
The x-bows I have inspected seem a little heavy for me, but I will adapt if this is the way to stay in the woods during bow season as I pass into the youth of my old age. At least the bickering will settle down so we all can now just concentrate on hunting.

There was a time when I shot in my back yard within the village lines. I shot early in the morning before going to work. One time an arrow got away from me and it ended up bouncing off a neighbors concrete garage. After that, never again. I'm satisfied with my 12 yd. shot in my own basement. Never outside again and risk getting pinched for a violation.

We struggled getting our son through college, now through grad school, and these loafers just sit back and wait for a check before driving over to a nearby casino. Upon returning from a hard day( or night) of gambling, kick back in their easy chairs to watch a little wheel of fortune or price is right. I believe a number of these slobs deliberately sit in their unpainted, unkempt homes, waiting for someone to pick up their garbage, cut the grass and paint the damn place, just because they know some feel good volunteer group will eventually do the work for free. Country is just nuts.

A co-worker of mine used to go to Wellsville area to trout fish in spring. He would hit the Graves rd. bridge among other stops. He would use meal worms for bait.
