  1. I would be happy with 4 deer in 9 years.
  2. The doe that was struggling at the beginning part of the video is what the anti-hunters will grab onto in their fight against hunting in general. For me, I would not have this video out there for public viewing. I recall the recent pictures of the doe with the arrow protruding through its face. I believe those pictures made the national news. Although the person pulled off the shots, the video can be used to portray hunters as a bunch of wild shooters. We don't need that kind of negative publicity.
  3. 3500 Customers is a good number of customers to restore power to, given the miles of electrical distribution lines needed to serve. I have worked in restoring power after storms for National Grid in rural areas south and east of Buffalo, but not to the extent of rural terrain that the Adirondack region offers. Such a pain to restore poles/conductors. Good luck and hope things get back in order before too long. When our son attended SUNY Potsdam, I always enjoyed the ride up 81 then route 11 to Potsdam. Now that he graduated, I kind of miss the trip...maybe this summer for old times sake. Must be difficult to live in rural areas, considering you need to be properly supplied with food, fuel for heat and cooking, water, T-paper...everything. Seems like you need to load up with suppies for a month just to eliminate expensive road trips for stuff. God bless ya...
  4. I'd rather watch " Deadliest Catch".
  5. Great idea of using frozen bait of deer bits, and so on. I would like to see an individual coyote hunter have 24 hour per day coverage on coyote elimination by leaving, during non-stand hours, a small coyote gulp package of bait tied into a portion of a womans stocking. tie off both ends and leave next to the gut-icicle. When the hunter is away, at least there is a shot of getting a coyote by means of the coyote swallowing the morsel, and having the coyote eventually die of digestive tract issues. Of course, keep the domestic animals away from this set-up. Just my 2 cents.
  6. I had a good season. Got about 10 days in, all told, between bow and rifle. Didn't harvest a deer, but had a good season. Chose to pass on a couple bucks at 7 yards with 1 side of rack busted off. A good season. Bad seasons will be when I'm taking a dirt nap...That will suck.
  7. Spoke to a DEC official in Buffalo and he was not encouraged from the early deer take results. He felt the season wasn't going well for meeting harvest target for DMU's in WNY area, but who knows for sure until the official tally comes in.
  8. deer venison lasagna with vegetable sides and pumpkin pie and whippee cream.
  9. I like Montana Mojo, rather than New York numbness.
  10. ....sipping that beverage in front of a fireplace would be perfect..
  11. can anyone offer a numerical comparison of this years entries as compared to previous years? Judging by the concern of Lawdwaz, there must be a serious drop in entries.
  12. Turning 60 sucks...but it's better than a dirt nap...
  13. Judging by the 20 yard width you describe, sounds like high voltage transmission line property which is usually owned outright by the utility, which means you could get in trouble with trespassing on private property, if caught. High voltage transmission lines usually require property widths ranging from 60 to 100 feet so as to safely maintain the line(s). Did you see any utility "no trespassing" signs attached to the poles/towers? As far as the State land by permit part, sounds like you may be out of luck as far as hunting there, unless you have some written permission. Also, those state signs also serve as a warning to the utility that no encroachment from the utility will be allowed without an environmental permit from the State. If I were you, I wouldn't hunt that strip of land. And as a side note, I have seen metal ladder stands attached to utility poles in areas where people think no one will look. Well, as a former utility employee, I have walked miles of line and you will not believe what people will do to harvest a deer...please don't get any ideas about setting/attaching stands to utility poles...I have found a couple and had line dept. remove them...kinda dumb to hunt with distribution/transmission voltages just above ready to kill someone.
  14. I consider it too windy when I see white caps on the camp pond.
  15. Bow hunt is my way of having some control over the neighbors. Mostly peaceful and the deer are mostly undisturbed. Come NY gun season, I'm better off spending the money for a Montana hunt with friends and have a great time.
  16. I sit when I hunt. I carry a small foldable tripod seat and attach to my pack. When I find a suitable location, I set up the seat in a blowdown and am ready to go.
  17. stash a 5 gal bucket with cover near your stand and paper. If ya need to drop a load, at least you can cover it up and dispose back at camp.
  18. At least you and the other guys talked things out and were civil about the situation.
  19. In 9h, I like to be in my ground blind about 45 minutes before legal shooting begins.
  20. Sorry, I should have referred to Feral dogs from the beginning. Hope we can move on from this. Looking forward to rifle season. Good luck.
  21. Always fun the afternoon before the opener to grill steaks, have a mixed drink and sit in Adirondack chairs shooting the breeze around a campfire.
  22. I wish other dog owners were as interested in training their dogs as well as you claim. Good for you. The dogs I refer to are those feral dogs running wild and doing harm. I will always take those out whenever I can. Had enough of feral dogs growling and snapping at me while hunting. Guess I'm a heartless loser when I take one out. I suppose I'm wrong to do so in your world...
