Very much a newbi with questions
Fantail replied to Grizz1219's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Going by the 1st post, your going to be competing with corn, beans, & sunflowers till end of Oct or more depending on scraps. Tough one. Sounds a bit like going bass fishing with rubber lures when the guy next to you has live crayfish. Imho concentrate your efforts of shooting lanes and stand work. If you got time, maybe clear a spot for some cold climate spot jazz, or as an alternate, if your going to be there for years to come how about planting some dwarf/crab apple trees? -
Good thread! Potential is there. Hope they make it through the year and survive a harsh winter if there is one. How much can they grow in 4 months if they keep healthy. Speaking of looking good this 4 showed up on a cam I was having trouble with; Now, in my book buttons/spikes get a pass. Another reason why I like filling dmp's. I can't imagine going through the freezer by the time Archery opens so this guy could walk, still this guy could be tempting by then.

"Pop can Buck" I like it.

It occurs to me as I'm learning more about plots, that perennials can be a wise inclusion Spring browse for the local herd gives them a good start I would think. I've since pulled this cam for other surveillance duty but I wanted to share these videos. It's also nice to see lasts years labor continuing to work. I'm also hoping that with luck the other plots & the expanded area grow & this one will help introduce the local deer to them.

You know it's gonna be a bad day when.....

Fairly rude of these Canadian Bears not to knock first. -
Alot of people looking at clubs initialy want a place to shoot - sight in. Others might not hunt but own 1500$ trap-skeet guns and enjoy clays. Same goes for Archery & pistol. It can get elaborate especialy if your club hosts sanctioned shoots and local law enforcement uses the facilities. One of our young shooters is getting club sponsored trip to the olympics, she is quite good.

Local Business comes under State and Union attack
Fantail replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in General Chit Chat
It's funny I remember when hitlary was using this state as a spring board all the 'union' offices and buildings had her signs greased to the windows, walls and yards. -
Hey, if they change the laws we could all put out feeders and attract wild Bore! No thank you. Yeah I shop at Gander once in a while, it's sort of on the way to camp and I do small plots, they usually stock the seed-mix I'm after. Seen the same jazz this thread is about, who hasn't if you've been there. It occurs to me corn and 'feed' would attract unwanted critters. Look at it this way, think about all the rats that have settled down to welfare in this country. Gander should rent rear-tine tillers, or - sell these signs;

IR cam - setting Q - white day pics
Fantail replied to Fantail's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
Update - well I contacted WGI and they are sending me some 'filters' to put over the lens to try. They probably won't get to me before the weekend so that gives me time to pull the cam bring it to camp & try facing South & other settings till then. -
Appriciate the feedback. I'm prepaired to mow it but never had to 'yet'. I think, the combination of the size of the plot, amount of light & browse has helped to manage it. Time will tell the clover plot is bracketed by two other plots about 40 yards away (tecomate deer peas plus / chicory).
-
Clover plot grew back a bit from last year, i've expanded it about 25% to the right & back of the cam. Also tilled up about a yard in from the outside into it to try and get rid of some rye. Put down more lime & 8.8.8. Tilled that in and planted more clover mix.

IR cam - setting Q - white day pics
Fantail replied to Fantail's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
Close to complete white out as I can think of, a few other snaps it looks like it's trying. I'll take it back if I have to, just hate being bothered with that hassle. -
Got another cam facing generaly North, takes good night stills but in daylight hours the pics are white. Pir med, res med. Switched res to high. If I can't find the right setting I can mess with it at camp I suppose. Not convinced it's defective. Tested it at home before I set it up. New at this - any pointers?

In the clover plot. -
Being an old gear head I can appriciate that story.

For a store bought mix-product, Antler Kings Fall/Winter/Spring mix (winter rye/peas) doesn't look bad. Looks like it's mostly the rye though. 1/2 acre bag would be plenty to overseed the new plot & extend to part of an old logging trail. Giving me plenty of time to work on the area, grind up the ground and work some lime into it. Ph is only 5.5 avg now. But just like the other plots when I started they are now 6.0 or higher. Friggin rocks.

Clovers, lime and fertilizer.
Fantail replied to erussell's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I am thinking a few differences in the condition of the soil in the avg yard vs. what qualifies as dirt in a plot might require some asistance. edit - being lime, fert, & some tilling to work these into the ground. -
There's got to be a TNG joke in this story somehow.

Looks good! NIce & clean.
