I bought a small thermos with a flip top lid, and I take in some hot black coffee to sip on through out the morning. It helps take the chill off. The one I got was from the camping section of Walmart. It holds 6 cups.

Congratulations! I remember my first bow deer, great experience.

Rage broadheads turned me into a believer today
loworange88 replied to Hock3y24's topic in Bow Hunting
Ive used the Chisel tip 100 grains for a few years now. The last buck I shot was through the heart, the Rage literally cut the heart in half, when I pulled it out during the field dress...my buddy was pretty much in awe that the heart was in two pieces clean. The entrance and exit holes were impressive as well. Ive not noticed the heads being "flimsy" in any way. My opinion though. -
I have mine mounted on the upper section of my Summit. I've even climbed up and down with the bow rotated far forward, and have had no issue. Its nice to have the bow at the ready with less than an arms length away. I've seen the ones sold at Gander and other stores....they work, but the Third Hand unit is very beefy and well built.

Hazmore Silent Seats

I bought one. I like it. All positives aside from the bit of comfort sacrificed. Sheds a little bit of weight from the original seat...every little bit helps when carrying. -
Looking to buy non toxic Shotshells

Al, You can order on Gander Mtn website, and ship it to their store, then just go pick it up that way. -
+1 on the Third Hand straps...I recommend their universal bow holder, its awesome. I leave the straps on all the time, and use them to stabilize the stand, tether the upper and lower together while climbing, and then cris-cross and attach them when you pack the stand together, and cinch tight, no need for the summit supplied strap that went around the stand to hold the two parts together when packing. Also that cris-cross works good for folding up my coat /layers, laying them into the stand, and then pulling the straps tight. Helps me to not get so sweaty when walking in. I used the Molle straps and waist belt, with a plastic frame on my Summit, and boy oh boy is it a dream to carry, once its on my back. The platform bar on mine is about chin level when on my back, so the grabbers are just at or just below my butt, and I tuck the cables into the tubes as far as they go so I dont hit them with my heels when walking. Good luck with it, I wish I'd have bought one years ago.

Hi everyone, I've been looking at the local GIS maps to find some possible hunting areas, or land parcels that border state lands....etc etc. My question is has anyone had any luck getting permission to hunt lands that are owned by a land trust company, or perhaps owned by a local business? I would assume I would be told NO due to liability reasons. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck in this avenue. Thanks

My summit is rated for 8-15" trees. What are you using?

http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/29305-for-all-you-climber-stand-hunterssummit-add-onspic-heavy/ Here is a link to the thread I made, showing the things I did to my Summit. Its pushing 25 pounds...35 pounds if I pack the Sherpa game cart vs. carrying by hand. Weight is always an issue, unless you go with a Summit open shot or a Lone wolf basic climber, your pretty much going to be at the 20-25 pound mark from my own experience with 2 previous climbers ive used.

I use this one by HSS... http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/bowhunter/ Its light, super easy to put on and take off...basically slip it on like a backpack, clip the chest buckle, and clip the two thigh buckles. DONE. I wear it under my coat, so I put it on at the car, and then all I need to do when I get to my spot is finish layering up. As far as using it with my climber, I keep the tree strap in my pocket, attach it to the tree once I'm up about 6-8 feet. Then I move it up when I need to, and climb up, stop, move strap, climb..... Honestly it doesnt take that much more time to climb doing this than not.

May I suggest an Ares Defense SCR!? Featureless rifle that is built on AR platform and uses a standard upper, and takes AR mags, but no pistol grip and it has a traditional style butt stock. I bought one earlier this year and its a fun rifle. Fully NYS compliant, and there are enough things that can be cosmetically done to still make it look "scary" and still be 100% within the law.

Use a ratchet strap around the outside of the block target and then ratchet it down. It will compress the foam layers and give you a little more life/stopping ability. I got a black hole target from Gander last year, and it is starting to wear out from broad heads. I'll be putting a strap around it soon. I had an original Block target that pretty much dry rotted, it lasted a long time.

Thanks guys. TCIII I'm not sure I'll climb with the bow in the holder....I have narrow limbs on my Z7Xtreme the holder holds my bow...but not like demonstrated on their website. Just not enough surface area across the limbs to hold it super steady while climbing...I already tried. Other than that, its awesome, while at rest.

Hey all. So this is more of a "I'm showing off" than anything else. But I wanted to show everyone my "upgrades" to my Summit Mini Viper SD. I ditched the big suspension seat for a Hazmore Silent seat(made in the USA) this thing is cool it sheds some weight and slides way back out of the way, so when you stand up you can stay close to the tree. I added a Third Hand Archery Universal Bow holder, and stabilizer straps(made in the USA). Next I had a guy at work mill me a bracket for my quiver that mounts to the stand. This holds my quiver down near my feet on the riser bar. Quiver just slides in with arrows facing upward, making my arrows accessible and ready to go should I need a second one. I also added a MOLLE frame, Shoulder straps, and a Lumbar belt...let me say that this set up makes carrying this thing a breeze, all of the weight is fully distributed across my back and waist. The stock Summit backpack straps were really lame IMO. Finally the Sherpa Game cart(made in the USA) kit that attaches to the stand and turns it into a game cart. Lastly I cut and added these furnature feet felt pads to the inside area where the cable meets...it reduced the metal clang that happens when they are snapped in place. Thanks for looking...I cant wait to get this thing in the woods this year.

There are tons of forums and theads over at Archerytalk, and some on Texasbowhunter.com http://discussions.texasbowhunter.com/forums/showthread.php?s=74c5511866de47401063f26f01ebd2a0&t=551076 http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2405577&highlight=arrow+saw The one from archerytalk, uses a small harbor freight chop saw....I've seen lots of these using this saw. I've been thinking of making one, but just havent committed to it yet.

I think practicing with it many times will help out alot as well. We practice extensively with our bows...why not with our climbers? If you can get the stand set up and ready to go(as in how you want it to be while sitting in a tree) before hand thats a big help. OR get used to set up and take down, then work on the finer details(bow hanger, hoist rope location, etc etc.) Also take it out in the yard if you have an adequate tree, and set it up and take it down a few times, get familiar with your equipment so that it starts to become second nature I plan on doing just that, I just got a Summit Viper Mini, and I upgraded the carry straps to MOLLE gear. My plan is to get my gear pockets situated, get my stabilizer straps pre-mounted, get my tether rope set to the length between upper and lower section...and carry it to my maple tree in my yard, and proceed to un-pack it, attach it to the tree, and take it back down and pack it up. Its like working the bugs out of equipment. Plus, you can see and hear what the stand does...if you have a small spot that connects metal on metal, glue a thin piece of rubber or felt on that one spot, it will quiet things down. ArcheryTalk.com in the DIY forum section has tons of old posts on things others do to tweak or quiet down climber stands. Food for Thought.

Where are you located? -
The only way to really hamper the hoarding, in my mind is to ration it.....lets say hypothetically speaking; Cicero Gander MTN, made a policy that to buy limit supply(in ultra high demand) ammo(items), said customer needs a "store card" that MUST be scanned for limited supply items, and if you reach your limit for a period of time(week, month, quarterly) Then you aren't allowed to purchase this item. However there seem to be all sorts of issues or problems that could occur with this method, not to mention the ammount of pissing and moaning that would stem from it, and the super paranoid wondering who can see how much of any item was bought blah blah blah.... Plus none of the stores would do this because they are turning profit margins at the end of the day.

Here in CNY hoarders ARE a problem, perhaps not the only problem, but a problem none the less... The local Gander MTN and I'm sure other stores, have a line of A-holes outside waiting on Shipment days, and as soon as the doors open, they rush the counter, buy up all that the store has, and move on to the next store. I've seen it with my own two eyes. The clerks will then say they see the same faces week after week of the same guys buying up all they can. Other store clerks have said the same thing at different times. Walmart, Dicks, Herbs, Gander.... I havent really hit up any of the "local" smaller shops, only reason is from where I am in Cicero, its a drive and half to get to some of the smaller shops, and at that point its not worth MY time. And yes like you...I have moved onto other calibers to fill the void. But I was never the type of guy to shoot up a 500 round brick in an afternoon anyways.
-
I've seen it come and go in spurts. I'll see it here and there for a period of time, then I don't see it for a long time. CNY has a problem with "hoarders" the local stores get hit early in the AM when they get a shipment(S) and it all gets bought up. On the flip side....17 HMR is all over the place near me.

My Mathews quiver has 4 screws at the top on the back where the bracket meets the hood. I cut a piece of 1/16" thick cable with a red plastic coating on it, about 4 inches long. Then used 2 electrical ring terminals....crimped one on either end, and then attached it using 2 of the mounting screws on the quiver. Cost me less than a dollar to make, and took a whopping 5 minutes.

I've seen them with my own eyes. I didnt want to believe it, but yes, one Friday morning, I went to the GM there and they were lined up outside and rushed the counter once doors opened until it was gone.
