4K... 10/21-10/22....Hunted Morning. Saw a group of 3 doe and a unknown on Saturday. Saw what I believe to be the same group of 3 doe Sunday morning. I have seen a spike and a fork from the stand earlier in the month. I have seen no evidence of chasing at all yet. Pulled camera cards and finally have a shooter on camera....It was at 1am but at least he was on there. I would say 4 k is at least a week probably two away before real movement starts....

Practice draw on deer you don't intend to shoot?
ApexerER replied to ApexerER's topic in Bow Hunting
It is a permanent location, I practice on imaginary deer when I am planning on climbing down and to make sure I can draw my bow ok after sitting still for several hours. My question was more inline with do you practice not getting busted on the draw? -
Practice draw on deer you don't intend to shoot?
ApexerER replied to ApexerER's topic in Bow Hunting
That was my question and pretty much what I thought. Better to stay still as possible then take a chance on getting busted...Not worth the practice. And Moog I do that all the time, OK the deer is here I would be able to turn...the deer is here I would be able to draw etc..... Not worth the movement and education to the deer.....Thanks for the replies.... -
You guys sure give her a hard time....I would be willing to bet it is intended to be illegal. I would also be willing to bet that Grow is correct and could win in a court of law because I am sure it says no where in there that you can't carry a bow and a crossbow. I would be willing to bet all those regulations were written before crossbows were legal in NY so if you wanted to and had the time/money/lawyer to fight it I would be willing to bet you could get out of a ticket. Intending to be illegal and illegal are two different things. Its no different than the stupid gun laws we get when people write laws that no nothing about guns....My guess is that Grow is actually correct and the way the laws are written it is technically not illegal but that the area LEO may/probably would still give you a ticket that you would have to fight. Just my worthless 2 cents.

Practice draw on deer you don't intend to shoot?
ApexerER replied to ApexerER's topic in Bow Hunting
Hard to argue with that reasoning but you never look at a deer through a scope when you are rifle hunting? -
I have had deer in bow range on several sits this year. A couple small bucks and what I assume is the same group of doe I keep seeing. Nothing that I intend to shoot this time of year although the one large doe has been tempting a couple of times. I was thinking after the 3 doe passed yesterday that I wonder if I should practice drawing on deer. Generally I spot them as they are coming in and determine they are not shooters, and either watch or take pics on my phone if they are really close. Generally I just sit as still as possible and watch as long as I can. I have only harvested two deer and a coyote with my bow in the time I have been bow hunting. I sure could use the practice moving and getting set up and drawing. I am not sure doing this is worth getting busted if I move to fast and do something wrong. I don't want to screw up my stand. What do you think is better...practice or staying as undetected as possible.

Had 3 doe come in from behind and walk past all within 20-25 yds. I hope keeping them around pays off when the bucks are chasing them.
-
Small doe at 30 yds...suprised she is alone...glassed heat several times figuring it was a button ...amazing how loud chipmunk are and how quiet deer are

Got settled in the stand about 6:45. Seems like the best morning since opener. Very light wind and 39 degrees. Pulling for Grampy and his grandson today! Get r done!!!

From my experience....which is little to none.....The ticks seem like they like more brushy/high grass area's. That seems to be the only time I run into them. Maybe it just makes it easier for them to get on me though because generally if I am walking through a forest I am not brushing up against tons of trees/branches etc.
-
Yea, I have heard that on the news but I really haven't had an issue with them until we went to that one place last weekend. I won't be going back....lol.....Thank you for the heads up...

Ticks are strange, it doesn't seem like they are everywhere. I have not found a tick on me while hunting and the deer I have shot I haven't noticed any ticks in them (although I haven't looked hard). I haven't felt the need to spray my gear or anything. I walk my dog very frequently at a Nature preserve around the corner from my house. In all the years I have been going there I noticed 1 tick on my dog. My neighbor and I decided we would try a nature preserve a little farther away (by Saratoga Lake) last weekend. We walked basically the whole preserve. A lot of brush and tall grass. Got in the truck to leave and felt something on my arm....flicked a tick off out the window, felt something on my leg not long after and it was another tick. When I got home I noticed one on my dogs head...brought him in the bathroom where there was good light and pulled off at least 25 and flushed them and decided to take the dog outside and brush him where I pulled off at least 25 more. His Seresta collar is suppose to kill them but I don't want those buggers in the house. I took a shower after because I felt like they were all over me....

Biz, when I was 16 years old my first year deer hunting with my Dad I was walking up an old logging road...plodding along paying no attention to anything because i was young and dumb (still dumb, just not young) and the biggest deer I have ever seen jumped out of a thicket right next to me. It scared the crap out of me and let out the loudest snort I have ever heard and was high tailing it up the side of a ridge to my left. I unloaded my 12 GA (5 shots) in its general direction as it worked its way up a very steep ridge...loaded two more shells in and fired them as it disappeared over the top. I was 43 when I got the 9pt in my avatar (by far the biggest buck of my life) and to this day I would swear that deer was bigger. My Dad was about 250 yds away and came right over and didn't understand how I could have possibly shoot so many times so quickly....we scoured the side of that ridge for blood even though I knew in my heart I came nowhere near hitting him. I will always wonder what that deer actually looked like...I still can picture it today running up that ridge. At least you know what your encounter was and you still got to enjoy him with your dad.....Your day will come and the longer it is the sweeter it will be!

Best of luck! I'll be rooting for you guys.....can't wait to see pics when it happens!!

That had to be unbelievable!!! The things we get to see in the woods while hunting...even if they are few and far between are the main reason I get up early and sit in a stand. That is awesome!
-
Its the only thing I have ever tried that I would recommend. And I have tried damn near everything...lol

That makes sense, thank you for answering....Enjoy reading all the stories....

Your favorite brand of hunting gear
ApexerER replied to StevieSacs's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I don't really have a favorite brand. I don't think I have a single matching item. I have UA base layers for when its cold just like Biz....although sometimes I still get cold. I have some scentblocker light weight pants and a pair of Browning Pants for when its colder. I have a lightweight UA jacket and a heavier jacket from Field and Stream for when its cold. I have a Cabela's heated vest that is awesome. I just have a bunch of crap that seems to work ok for me... -
This is what I am using as well.....Both vertical bow and Crossbow

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Hope you have found him by now......Good Luck! Post some Pics!
