  1. If it's still up in the wee hours of the morning it makes finding the stand a bit easier.
  2. What sound does it make, and what ducks are you trying to call with it? Screeches and whistles are generally made by open-water (lake) ducks , and are completely different from the sounds that puddle ducks make. If it's an older call it's also possible that it's no longer making the sound that was intended. I have calls that my grandfather used in the 40's and 50's which are keepsakes and heirlooms, but they can't be used to call ducks any more.
  3. Have you seen the picture of Turkeyfeathers in his bunny costume yet? It'll probably open a whole new world for you. Sorry TF! And welcome again Artemis. There's a lot to be learned here besides the good-natured banter.
  4. I hadn't noticed that either! Yikes, I'm getting old. ;-]
  5. I wish you all the best! If I don't cut the deer myself I take them to a friend of mine who is a third generation processor. His kids are now the fourth generation and they're as good as their great-grandfather was. Honesty and integrity where no one cuts corners.
  6. The only thing I really change is that during bow season the tree is at my back, and during gun season I can hide behind the tree and use it as cover and an offhand rest for the firearm.

Nice job! I've never seen a euro duck, but I like it.
  8. Welcome aboard Jason! We have a good group here who share knowledge and pics. Enjoy! And please show some pics of your own.
  9. Welcome Artemis, to our big and often dysfunctional family!! The most important thing to learn is how to be part of the woods, as opposed to just being in the woods. The nuts-n-bolts of managing the cold and wind direction and reading sign and whatnot are certainly important, but it takes some time to develop a mentality, comfort level, and instinctual awareness that allows you to actually become a successful apex predator. You learn that by spending a lot of time in the woods just trying to be part of the woods.
  10. Very sad. My heart goes out to the family and friends. This shouldn't happen, and it certainly shouldn't be blamed on a "hunter". I happen to own a "Thompson center-fire". That's not what I call it, of course. It doesn't strike me as the type of weapon a novice would buy for deer hunting.
  11. Welcome to the site Storm914! Thanks for joining.
  12. Senator Johnson's gripe has nothing to do with the SALT (state and local taxes) you're talking about. His concern is that pass-through corporations like LLC's, S-corps, and sole proprietorships don't get the same tax rate as big corporations, which in most cases is untrue when all other factors are considered.
  13. Welcome to the site Thegatman! Pull up a chair and enjoy.
  14. What if Greenville, SC suddenly became the home of the Stock Exchange. Or Huntsville, AL became the center of movie production? Given today's political climate, would there be a difference of opinion with regard to the 'centers of power' in this country? Of course there would, because it's just damned wrong that rubes and hicks and gun-toting, bible-carrying Americans should ever be able to govern themselves in this new world. It's not about the basic nuts-n-and-bolts of the tax plan, it's about stopping the President's effort to change the way DC works. It's a big f***ng club, and we ain't in it.
  15. Gun hunter or not, that little deer is in for a tough year.
  16. Sort of off-topic, but I've never understood the concept of allowing deer meat to "age". Beef is aged because the process breaks down the fatty tissue within the muscles/meat, but wild deer don't normally have much fat, if any, in their muscle structures. Hang it head-down to fully bleed it out overnight for sure, but cut it up as soon as you can.
  17. I've only dealt with one frozen deer. My pickup had a cap on the bed and I put an electric space heater in with the critter over night. It was good to go the next day. Certainly not ideal by any means, but I managed to make it work.
  18. If the Democrat states didn't spend the money of their taxpayers foolishly and then continually ask them for more we wouldn't be in this position. Right? Blaming the Federal government for State incompetence is a non-starter with me. You are still 'at liberty' to leave this state at any time to avoid the oppression of this particular State. Any law, tax related or otherwise, that mandates that the rest of the country subsidize the failures and inadequacies of a few states is wrong.
  19. I've been hit by wind-blown tree branches a few times, both hunting and working. Even if you manage to stay in the tree it's never much fun. It's an individual choice I guess.
  20. LOL! That pretty much nails it. Thanks for the input.
  21. I've never had anything from Buffalo Trace that wasn't outstanding, including their vodkas. The tour is pretty cool as well. Lots of tast(hic)ing. Designated driver required.
  22. Pappy Van Winkle bourbon from the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfurt KY. With one small ice chip. Not a cube. Just a chip.
