I need to look into this trefoil.. Just heard about it recently. And if turkeys eat it.. im planting it in a mix somewheres. Is it an annual? what blend would it work good in? if you had a recommendation.

I took an area that looked just like that BigP..Worked and cleared by a log skidder.. I then spread a good dose of DeerAg clovers over it before a rain in mid May.. They did very well for a first year clover... but this year, year2.. they look even better. besides a few grasses and weeds that popped up. Lush and dark green. Other than spreading the seed, i have done nothing to this plot. I will be mowing it soon.

This spot has always been a good predator hunting spot. I do believe there is a coyote den not to far away. For anyone that may remember all the coyote pups i had on cam a couple years ago. Those pics were taken right here. I believe it is on the neighbors somewhere. Would love to find it. Greene, There is a stand at the bottom of this where i have a staging area food plot. I will be putting one up on the top this year, to see down the hill and across this cut. That cat, walked in front of the cam 8 minutes before i pulled the card. And before i pulled the card, i had just spent 45 minutes at the bottom of that hill spraying a food plot with my quad. He must have been watching me the whole time, or strolling through as I poked around with the wheeler. He was there 2 nights in a row at the same time roughly. Had quite a few cat pics here this spring and i seen a bobcat right here twice last year during gun season..

Hunting blind

Ive been thinking, after looking around camp this spring. Our old outside "shitter" just sits there. Since we now have water and plumbing for toilets sinks and showers for several years. Its beginning to settle and lean.. I bet that would make a good and especially cheap gun season blind keeping for out of the weather.. Just modify the "seat" some, and cut a few windows into it. It can be salvageable. lol, instead of just burning it in a bon fire. Paint it up and move it a few hundred yards to a food plot. lol. I may be on to something here.. Dont mind the picture, i snapped a pic of the Crab apple tree then snipped it down to focus on the "new gun house" -
My neighbor recently found a turkey nest with what looked like a little less than a dozen eggs, all busted up and broken. I hate seeing that when the turkey population could stand to be higher.. This nest wasnt more than 50 yards from one of my spring cameras between 2 heavy clearcuts.. as thick as the area is becoming now from the heavy timber harvest last May, it would seem like perfect nesting habitat with an abundance of young cover. But it also seems it would be a great spot for predators to ambush some small prey. Well, the trail cam has proved that.. I have a ton of predator pics here this spring, daytime and night. Also a lone hen that frequents this spot nearly everyday, late afternoon and mid morning. Hope she picks a different spot to re nest those eggs. Heres a few pics from this card pull..

No till with corn is hard, unless its a no till drill. the seed needs to be under the soil good. and over an inch deep. Especially for the birds sake. If its not deep enough the tweety birds will pull it right out of the ground.. also if not deep enough i would imagine the wind can raise hell with it. Un even seed bed is tough with no till, if your using bigger seeds. Smaller seeds should still work, provided good heavy rains follow. -
If my wife didnt get me a 6.5cm savage for xmas. Id be all over it. but like Grampy, Im looking for dedicated coyote rig too.

If you were heading north it would be the last plowed/planted field on the left(west) side, before you hit 45mph.. She was back in the corner.

Im most certain I seen a doe giving birth at about 5:20am this morning on my drive in to work in Gorham on rt364.. It Looked like she was really working for something big.. unless she was constipated. I'd expect Wooly will have some great pics for us pretty soon! Heard he went for a hike the other day to his "spot" lol

I spoke with her a little while back. And I'm most certain we will not see her here ever again. Hope everybody learned what they could from her, as she did offer a ton of information, and experiences. -

I broadcast everything usually. If its a clover blend i'm seeding. I just spray with gly, then broadcast seed once i see it all turning brown(5-10 days after)If i know I definitely killed it all with the first spray ill seed it the same day.. right before good rains though. The rain part is super important. No rain means probably no germination here. Brassicas, grains and soybean seeds ill do the same, but follow the broadcasted seed with rolling it with heavy lawn roller. Rain is still super important here, but if your ground is damp, or soft enough the roller will push your seed in enough to allow for germination. But rain is the key for both. We have a small seed drill we made last year. I may try it this year .. The seed tubes broke so we just broadcast the soybean last ytear. Just takes longer to plant with the seed drill we made vs broadcasting it. -
Hinge or Tip some trees over on the edge .. make a nice Clover plot. maybe a little oats or wheat mixed in

Leeks. How do you prepare or use them.
LET EM GROW replied to mowin's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
I eat them soon as i clean them. OR if they make it that far, cast iron pan, have done them on the grill with olive oil. We eat them like you would an onion or asparagus. They go great on everything it seems lol. -

Im not sure if its the clay soil i work with or what, but my perennial plots have done very well for not doing anything prior to planting them ever. But I am strictly no till with no planter now, so i do all i can to aid in germination and retaining moisture. Kinda excited to see how this works. How did yours do? -

Ordered some seed last night. I have become big on planting big mixes. Mainly for structure, OM and diversity . Will be planting A screening mix as well as a high energy cover/winter feed mix together. On the outside edge it will be strictly Screen. The complete mix is: Buckwheat, Soybeans, Sunflowers, Sunn Hemp, WGF Sorghum, Forage Sorghum, Egyptian Wheat, Pearl Millet into one plot. This will be slightly under an acre that will bud up to my Clover plot which is around an acre. And the other side of that is a rejuvenating Clear cut. Should be lots of available food and cover in this general location. I also bought some seeds for building soils in a plot that doesn't do so well on one half. That mix has: Spring Triticale, Oats, Spring Peas, Buckwheat, Crimson and Berseem Clover. This will be terminated and used to aid with a fall plating. -

It was nice reading her updates and experiment trials! I was going to get the sprayer hooked up this week and get to spraying soon ... Like to try some new Summer forages, and such I have yet to try. Growing season came fast once the snow stopped! lol. I have an edge i want to spray off and plant a mix of soybeans, sunflower, corn, sorghum and egyptian wheat. With a straight screen on the outside edge looking in. Hoping to get some summer forage with a little screen too. If they hammer it ill seed in brassicas or Cereals depending on the time.. This buds up to my "Murder Plot which is Clovers currently. Might bust this sod up and not do no till. This hasnt been farmed in many years.. if it ever was.. -
What would you grow
LET EM GROW replied to The Engineer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
150ftx150ft or yards? IF feet, I would plant a buffet blend(Annual clovers, Brassicas, Cereal grains, Winter peas) in both Early August. O rsplit this buffet blend in two, half the species in one, other half in the other. If yrds, I would plant one in a pure brassica blend, with half having bulbs. Then maybe overseed an annual clover or a perennial if you want a clover plot established for march april the following year.. or a soybean plot with a corn perimeter possibly.. Lots of choices to pick from if your plot is bigger.. -
The 500 Mossy is a youth. I love it. Whichever gun i stick with will be a youth model, yes sir!

I never thought id enjoy this much, carrying a lighter gun in the field. Never thought much of it. Just a light compact gun when birds are close or even just running and gunning. Its nice to carry less weight. That being said, I want to see which 20 I like better, my Moss MAverick or the 870 20.. Then ill either deck them out for turkey, or pick up another 20 ga and sell one. I know how you feel though. But now that i started loading these shells, and i did everything by hand, weighed each powder, buffer and shot charge individually, i really enjoy this new adventure or whatever it is.. Kinda cool mixing it up some. Especially knowing small bore guns can kill as dead as big bores..

I load TSS now, really only for the fact of trying new things, and actually loading my own shell. Vs just buying a box off the shelf. ITs fun, I am just getting into loading rifle and shotgun shells and to me its just more enjoyable. But I also will load a turkey shell, set it up and use it to its max ability. if i was to load 6s in lead. I want a good evenly spread out pattern at 40, since to me 6s in lead are no good after that. The energy in a 6 lead to me, is not enough to consistently take birds. Load a heavy TSS pellet or a #4 in lead. I want to be able to use it at its maximum range(energy/penetration wise) with a pattern that will make that happen everytime. I have several turkey guns and they are all intended for different ranges/situations.. Depending on if im going with someone, taking someone out or what not.. I just enjoy trying new things every once in awhile. Plus i can tote a super lightweight, non kicking 410 now and take birds that most 12ga can, and cant do.. Just neat lol

Mossy 535 Was shooting 3.5" Winchesters like a champ.. Now slings 3" TSS 8s.. Will mainly be using the 20 gauges this year.. Slinging TSS 8s -
Congrats Mowin & Dom! I know its over now, but I wasnt sure what was happening here with nobody entering. I would have entered my step son, but he had hunted with his dad and id have to do my best to relay the story here lol. He missed a big bird Saturday and was rewarded with a jake at 10 steps while laying behind his decoy, Sunday. It happened so fast.

Ever since my kidds were born, Im always last minute and forget something. Im good for that! lol. They consume me. But as long as i have my mouth calls, and my crystal, and custom slate pot calls. My gun and ammo.. Im good. Decoys.. meh.. they piss me off more every year. I try to do the opposite of what everyone around me does. Speaking of that, i do need to get the 12ga shells out of my vest since ill be toting the 20 this spring. Tomorrow ill get it around .. home with my kids all day.

Im in for the experience and adventure! I guess antlers AND meat come next.. Ill pass deer deer legal, and of size per criteria all season long.. Just to watch them.. and take it all in. Then one day randomly decide to take a doe or what not.. But If that Mature beast finally slips up, i am not passing him up.. So i guess in that case Antlers come before Meat.. But unfilled tags are not an issue with me.. and Thats just me..
