  1. At some point, learning to "seal the deal" is as important a skill as any hunting skill that is learned. As in any activity. Practice makes perfect.
  2. I can not even put into words how cool it is to spend time in the hunting woods or on the water fishing with my grandsons. Ages 12 and 14. Becoming "grampy" has been the highlight of my life! Besides my beautiful wife of course! Congratulations NYH !
  3. I've gotten so much more from this forum, than the nominal fee for a support membership! There are some doggone good people here! For less than a magazine subscription, you get more friendly advice, tips and local info, that you just won't find in other mediums. And on a vast array of topics. Not mention the occasional belly laugh! So if anyone is on the fence, thinking about a support membership, to this great site. I encourage you to do so now. While it is fresh in your mind!
  4. The second weekend of bow after slipping on some wet leaves, going down a steep ridge. I broke my back (compression fracture). And lost my mind recovering, (couldn't hunt) for a while. For the most part, feeling much better now. Lost a blaze orange Buck knife after using it on my buck. I remember folding it and putting it in the pocket of my snow camo jacket. But after getting the deer hung, I could not find it. My have fallen out of my pocket during the wheeler drive to the barn? I bought it at the Cobleskill fair last summer, thinking I wouldn't lose a blaze orange knife. Wrong!
  5. Starting next week my grandson and I will be doing some small game hunting and coyote hunting. Hoping for some hard clear ice for ice fishing. And some snow pack for snow shoeing. Also before long, we will do our post season deer scouting for ideas on where to re-position stands for next year. Will also be gearing up and patterning a shotgun for grandson's first turkey hunt! Lots to do in the winter months to keep active and outside!
  6. My boat has been winterized, cleaned and covered since the end of September. Although a good number of people fish through October, I'm ready to bow hunt by October first.
  7. Congratulations! Way to collect yourself and make a tough shot on a great buck! Kudo's to you for hanging in there and getting it done late season with a bow! Very impressive.
  8. For COLD weather boots, I get them two sizes larger to fit heavy wool sox and the toasty toes warmers. And still have room to wiggle the toes while sitting. Tight boots equal cold feet, no matter what boot you wear. Of course the trade off is added weight and reduced mobility. I like to have at least one extra pair of hunting boots in my truck, to suit what type of hunting I'll be doing.
  9. Very understandable. Better to play it safe with the reindeer! Way to go Santa!
  10. Santa must be resting the reindeer! Saving them for the big trip next weekend! And getting himself in top shape!
  11. I agree with wooly's assessment 100%! That doe should be dead fairly close to where it was shot. Once the diaphragm is popped, the lungs cannot function properly and death will result rather quickly. Good advice to just wait for a more broadside shot with the bow. But we've all been there. Again, good luck with the recovery efforts in the snow cover. That does up the difficulty a notch or two.
  12. I'm with ya brother! Definitely my favorite time to be in the woods and hunting. Only nine more months to go!
  13. Bad news is, it's definitely a gut hit, using the red dot as a guide. Good news is, by now it's a dead deer. If she was not jumped last night, she should be laying within a couple hundred yards. Good luck with the recovery.
  14. Just about a perfect rifle - scope combination! Very nice! Quality to last a lifetime. To make memories in the deer woods, for a father and son. What an awesome Christmas gift! A gift that will keep giving, year after year!
  15. All thanks should go to you and Luna, for the time, dedication, and talent you both have. And for helping hunters you have never met. The service you provide to hunters is worth so much more than any dollar amount. I'd like to congratulate you and Luna on a spectacular season! I have followed this thread all year, and I'm so impressed with what you two do as a team. May you both have a warm Christmas season and a Happy tracking New Year!
  16. Congrats SD! Way to get it done man! Good luck to all you die hard crazies out there today!!!!
  17. Thanks for the chuckle. You must have some "BIG" deer in your area!
  18. Got a big doe last year with crossbow. 154lbs. weighed . My hunting partner shot a bigger one ten years or so ago that was noticeably bigger! But we never put her on the scale. It was early season and warm so she was cut up right away. But I'd be comfortable saying she weighed close to 170lbs!
  19. Got a healthy population of them in the hilltowns of Albany county. It's actually quite common to see them now. Beautiful and incredibly cool critters!
  20. Someone will be sitting next to you, with that old familiar smile. Good luck out there.
  21. You are right. But didn't know we were discussing wounded deer. Whole different topic there I'd assume.
  22. If there is drag marks in the snow, it will always be in front of the track. Showing direction. Most times but not always, drag marks will indicate a buck making the tracks in snow.
