I hit two doe in early bow season a year or two ago. I was in an 8 ft stand, too, so elevated. 6 does came in and were milling about, I picked out the second to last one at 25 yards. The deer behind it was at ~28ish yards but was a full body length to the right from my line of sight. I've shot plenty of deer like that scenario with bow and gun and no problems. This shot was pretty clean but for some reason I saw the arrow take a really really hard right upon exit and I admit I didn't see what immediately happened after that, but it was clear I had hit both deer. The one I intended folded up within 35 yards. The other was tail down, not hunched and bleeding from both sides visibly but ran out of sight into corn. Found my arrow about 80 yards away from the hit site and confirmed Doe #2 was bleeding both sides. Tracked into standing corn and it petered out heading into ground we cannot access. I was unable to recover her after searching pretty hard. I am convinced she died because we saw the now group of four pretty often after that. Was bummed at that mishap but I don't think I'd have played it any different if the situation presented itself again. That arrow had to have taken a 45-90 degree angle change. Arrow seemed to have deflected off of the off side does elbow as it reacted to the shot.

Bucks in highly observed settings. Alscheimer had witnessed this and written about it a ways back, but it's picked up momentum in recent years with increased surveillance capabilities - film, cell cams, stylistic hunting changes. One of the more "public" bucks was Lakosky's Gnarls Barkley in recent years. This has nothing to do with their high management/La-La land differences. The buck was just documented heavily and seen as subordinate to lesser bucks and was witnessed on feed to bed patterns during peak rutting timeframes over multiple years. Chases went on around him and he just ate. And ate. And went back to cover, and repeated that process. It's also a precursor to bully bucks being talked about more often and how they can impact the caliber of deer land managers/hunters want to see/target. It's not an always or nothing proposition, but this component of management is becoming more discussed. Some bucks are more predisposed, whether genetic, environmental, both, or some developing health issue, to not partake in the rut or have a much lower than average participation rate. Doesn't take much to draw a dotted line from lower caloric needs to entering winter in better shape, to earlier onset/better development of antlers. Is it a stone cold lock? Nope. But I think most people would see that it likely gives some advantage over peers worn down. Not much different than comparing an early born 1.5 vs. a late born 1.5.

Be mindful that I didn't quote you. Just because my post is underneath yours (without a quote) does not indicate that it is a measurement of my assessment as to how dumb I think you and your post truly are. You are making an assumption. And, we all know what happens then.

7 pages of comments on a thread from a moderator about personal attacks. How he hasn't demonstrated the ban hammer so eloquently debated about in this thread is beyond me. In light of being part of the solution, I propose driving a hard line on everything in this forum. There is no democracy here. The laissez-faire style is NOT what made this forum great. But getting rid of that style will make it less worse.

Deer are hardwired to be more active around sunrise and sunset to take advantage of their foraging and survival capabilities. That said, they also have to obey biological requirements to feed/water. Animals will adapt as necessary but I don't think it's genetic to "look up" - likely more disposition based which could be genetic. The same ones that look up are likely also the ones that allow other deer to enter a field first, bed in the center of other satellite beds, or are willing to sacrifice mating activities for security. There's alot of big bucks shot as part of the rut, but there is a notable % of top-end antler scoring bucks who were observed as non-participants in the rut. That likely helps contribute to survival, increased body weight retention, and likely antler growth when all other physiological requirements are addressed.

Hunting's Infighting & Fewer Hunters will end all hunting
phade replied to Rattler's topic in General Chit Chat
If we reserved 10% of the time whining about in-fighting, and instead placed that effort on access...I suspect the in-fighting would be almost imperceptible. What happens when you put more and more people into dwindling access or pay to play? Many leave and those that stay get radicalized into their corner. It's like shaking up a hornet's nest. -
Avoid. Amazon is filled with chinese direct sellers.

Runnings is a home/ag/outdoor/trade/lifestyle store. I find their prices to be pretty high - but their trade-off is strong product selection all in one store. For example, they usually have a few racks of Sitka gear, they sell high end brands for bows and firearms, quality tool names, and so on. Yet they also have local sourced goods - we bought some chicks from there this past Spring. I'm very price conscious (not cheap, but just wired to find the best pricing), yet I find myself enjoying that store even knowing I'll pay more than I would elsewhere.

Definitely liked my Sitka rain gear as Moog noted. It was worth the entry price. I can see myself wearing it for a long time. The kuiu rain gear is often very well spoken of. Gander's house brand was probably the best value I've experienced. My prior set lasted 10 years before the shoulder/back seams gave out during a rain-filled day.

Here are the red flags. 1. The bacterium has been talked about before, years ago by Bastian. 2. This has supposed human impact - IE CJD and misdiagnosed Alzheimers, and ALS, etc. They present this but yet say a hunter test kit is the first thing worked on? Then deer farm vaccines. Dumb. If this were truly real, the focus would be on human vaccine/antibiotics first. Not deer. Not to mention the cattle industry - Mad Cow disease testing would be worth billions, too. 3. if this were real, the pharma companies would be inserting significant money into this and the gov't wouldn't be asking about a 10 year plan. Cures/Fixes for humans would be worth billions. and there'd be a rush to market with increased investment on the financial and intellectual side. Instead we get more zombie deer articles.

It was filmed in early February. I've seen some in the scientific community say much of this is old data/news and just a spin. With the purported value, there'd be bigger investments and money pouring in from major companies if this had true merit. I am skeptical on this one.

It fooled me. I have the video to prove it lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's a new world record once it's entered. Deal with it. Be a skeptic. Be a supporter. Be suspect of how much money its worth. And whether you'd take the deals or not. You choose. That's the cool thing about hunting. You'd think a new world record would be celebrated by a group of fine hunters here at this site. Then again, maybe not. Congrats to the hunter. I hope his and his group's wildest dreams come to fruition. Even more than I am sure they already have.

How words are consumed and created is just more technology reflection. In 1989, there were a quarter million words. Today, more than a million are recognized. Reading isn't going by the wayside soon.

JOGGER KILLS MOUNTAIN LION IN FT COLLINS
phade replied to CapDistPatriot's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I think the scars and stories will work well in the bar. Not many people can say they wrestled a mountain lion and won. By the time he's 40 that mountain lion will probably be 200 pounds, ha. -
Technology enhances jobs and opportunities in the overwhelming majority of scenarios. Nothing is perfect, but this cycle has been proven for eons. Dating back to early mankind. A more relevant example. The ATM. When the ATM was released, there was panic in the streets that banks would disappear and tellers would be non-existent. Really, what the ATM did was take on the lower-value add transactional work for the teller and instead allowed the teller to focus on client service and higher value-add responsibilities. The net result? There are exponentially MORE banks and MORE tellers today than prior to the ATM's release. It spurred significant growth in the industry and created many more jobs. The opposite of the fear mongers' nightmares. Automated cashiers just result in more people to add value on other client-centric focus areas.

That line of model does not offer the sensitivity adjustment. Newer incarnations of the model have some adjustments. That said, picking up a mouse is a better outcome than missing wanted game. It's not like it's film days.

That's not entirely true. Your phone is likely setup to transmit certain message types via wifi. If your phone is connected to that wifi successfully, then you can send and receive those types of messages while on airplane mode. There are SMS, MMS, iMessage, etc. I do this all of the time while on Delta flights (you can text back and forth on their platform) and when I'm in the USVI to avoid picking up a BVI signal and costing me $$$.

You're getting it via wifi connectivity.

I have a "kid" who can't write very well with his hands, but he can think critically and code enough that he's automated six figures worth of savings in his first year. I can work with that. I don't care if he spells cat with a "K."
