This above advice is spot on, also WJ has been building rifles for a long time with a ton of experience. If you listen to anyone I would listen to him. To add to what he was saying when firing large quanities of shorts can cause lead build up on the edge of the chamber mouth, this can cause damage to the rifle, extreme inaccuracy to the normal LR ammo, and also cause the bolt from completely closing in extreme conditions and not allowing the rifle to fire.

Is that similar to the Huntstand app/site? I use the Huntstand app and like it. -
Mine is about 10 years out until he can pick up the bow but I'll be doing the same over the winter. I'm planning on adding a couple plots but plan on making them odd shaped and have multiple access points my property is diamond shaped on a hill with one part much steeper. It seems the deer will come off the top in the afternoon and run parallel to it. In the AM they come up from the bottom and across heading up the hill slightly. With that being said my plots will run more across the hill than up and down to accentuate the deer traffic. This will make them more inviting and keep them on their patterns during the hunting season. Deer won't want to visit the plots if it disrupts their habits especially once hunting pressure is present. That hunting pressure will drive a plot to become vacant just like any AG crop field edge. It is really important to have multiple escape and entry routes even if it means taking longer to get to your stand. Once the deer know you are there and you keep coming back to the same setup using the same path they will have you patterned and will avoid the area. This isn't true for all deer but I will tell you it is true for mature deer. I have seen yearlings not care but those 2.5 year olds and older they figure it out quick.

Then in your case why not? Never have enough guns! I don't have an AR-15 so I wouldn't buy a bolt in it, I guess I know what I need to build next...

Kind of sad someone would come and jump your spot because a big deer was there. It's almost comically being they think there will be a giant or big deer there every year or multiple biggins'. I see nice deer once every 2 or 3 years I wish we had big deer every year but they need time to grow so that doesn't happen in my area. -
Apples to apples you can get a better cartridge in a bolt action. Personally only reason I would get a .223 is in an AR platform. For the amount I would shoot the bolt I would get a 22-250, .220 Swift, .222, or .222 Mag something that would outperform the .223 and still not break the bank shooting it. Triple deuce has been a proven cartridge I love mine they are a little different than the .223 brass wise but in my experience will be twice as accurate with similar ballistics.

Truly impressive deer.

I post pictures but only because I don't tell people where they are from. I might give a WMU but not any specific area. -
If I had a 2 hour delay I would have hit the woods this morning, I was really hoping. I should probably mention I'm a school teacher so yeah I would love a snow day or a couple 2 hr. delays this week.

You need to be able to hold the doe if you want that. Deer wild animals they won't go down the street if they can get it across the hall. On my property we have a sanctuary of 1/3 acres next to my house there are tons of beds in there when I first scouted the area in March when we bought our property. I have "local" doe and some that venture in from other areas but I have my locals that don't leave my property or venture far from it.

My problem is the deer get too close, any .243 95gr. bullet going 3300 fps will fragment on me. I haven't found a bullet that will stay together. I have a few a few .270 bullets that have stayed together better, Hornady don't stay together for me but the Nosler ballistic tip seem to do better. Top is the one .270 130gr. nosler ballistic tip 150 yard shot, I didn't weigh it prior but if it was 130gr. I lost 5gr. I think mostly jacket. Bottom is the same bullet shot at 43 yards into the scapula spine of the shoulder it weighed 68gr. almost all the interior was gone.

I managed 2 doe this season, one being last evening about 5 minutes before I was getting down. All backed up with the rifle tied to the haul line here comes a group of 5 doe only 4 left. Big doe for my area and thankful I was able to get enough meat for the year to feed my growing family. Next year I'll be needing 3 deer to feed us all.

Yeah I don't want a shiny finish but wasn't sure if there was a way to keep it from turning yellow. I think it is from boiling the head and basically boiling the fat into the bone. I'm not sure there is a way to keep it from turning yellow short of painting or sealing it.
-
Do yours yellow over time? I have a couple that I was going to re-do with the peroxide to remove the yellowing.

I have seen people make culti-packers out of those corrugated plastic culverts. They fill it with cement then build a frame. Here is a link to one a guy did. Don't do what he did and use the double wall pipe. You want the single wall so the concrete fills in the grooves, if the pipe wears away you'll still have the concrete grooves. http://discussions.texasbowhunter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=550996 You could also fill an old water heater with concrete and build a frame.

Give them a call and make sure they didn't lose it. I haven't heard of any county taking this long, maybe NYC Bronx, Queens, ect.

I have hunted down here on the southern tier for about 7 or 8 years and have had a ton of ticks on me usually 2 or 3 every time I declothed. The buck I shot 2 years was loaded around 50 or 60 fell off when I hung it in the garage. I never really used any repelents and should have. Well this year at our new property I was use going to sawyers but I be darned haven't had a single one on me. My dogs have had 2 since March of this year. I don't know if this new area doesn't have as many or more rodents or something I haven't a clue but no ticks in my area. At my parents in 8F it's the same way I haven't had a tick on me or a deer I have shot.

I would just take my pistol out put it in the top of the head and pull the trigger a couple times maybe once or twice before it got to me.

We have 2 pole barns and 2 houses with 2 metal roofs. One house no barrier and it is like an oven and that isn't with metal siding other house has the barrier and it is nice and cool in the summer. Both pole barns are actually colder inside than the outside temp during the winter. Summer temps are bad on the lake with a almost constant breeze so the barns aren't that much warmer than ambient outdoor temp. Google "bubble wrap under metal roof" it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I have first hand experience with and without the installation of it. If he is going off the grid he isn't going to want to be running a/c units or fans non stop during the summer months. Being in the construction business you probably have heard of double bubble underlayment. I'm not saying it is required but definitely worth considering, the benefits outweigh the costs not to mention it adds more R-value to the areas it is used just keep it away from any high temp exterior vents.

To each their own, only problem with metal is if you don't use some sort of reflective barrier it can act as a heat sink removing heat in the winter and turning the cabin into an oven in the summer. The bubble wrap under the metal is the only way I would use metal on a 4 seasons heated building. With spray foam you won't get the rodents. My father in law has a "shed" that has 4" of spray foam going on 4 years not a single critter inside not even a sign, haven't even seen a spider web. Seal everything and you won't have critter problems.

If you wanted to get serious you could setup (10) 12v batteries in series to get 120V get 2 banks (20 batteries total) and a descent off grid panel setup and you would be set for 5 to 10 years depending on the batteries purchased. The problem with a deep well you won't have a 12v pump that will push over 10' of head. The rain barrel works but look into getting drinking water even if you don't use it to bathe or flush the toilet you will still want your own supply of fresh drinking water. If were you I would install all 120v LED lighting with a battery bank. much easier to find 120v supplies than 12v if you need to order everything online you can run into issues later on with availability. I will caution please do not put a battery bank within 100' of your cabin if anything happened within the banks you could have a bomb. I don't want to tell you how to plan your life, I have been thinking a lot about becoming less dependant and moving my utilities and such off grid.

Yes on numerous occasions and have 3 stands setup on or near ag fields. I have nothing wrong with someone if they wanted to bait or use plots there really isn't much of a difference as I see it. I find the CWD argument a mute point being that the deer share the same browse in nature and eat from the same fields whether you are baiting or not. I could see the use of a mechanical feeder being wrong in terms of morals that isn't hunting. But someone dumping a bag of corn is no different than sitting within bow distance of where the farmer dumped grain onto the ground or on a field edge that deer travel. I don't think you can just dump a pile of corn in the woods and expect deer to just come to it. I would think someone would need to scout first on where to put the pile. I haven't dumped piles of grain on the ground but have hunted AG fields where the deer frequent. Shot my 2nd biggest gun buck off a cut soybean field.
