  1. I can't see any long scratches, but do you have bear in the area?
  2. Welcome! There's a lot of good folks and good info to be found here.
  3. I saw two different news links on Facebook that said the officer was shot in the pelvis, and is expected to recover. Good Lord, there is no good place to get shot, but the pelvis? Prayers for a full recovery, and I hope the charges to the shooter get increased!
  4. Congrats on your first buck, and on a tough weather day as well. Good story!
  5. LOL!! By the way, I was watching a little 5 acre field surrounded by woods on the afternoon of the rifle opener, and at one point had 14 does in the field. My wife, at about the same time had 7 does in front of her 500 yds away from me. And we're both left wondering why the DEC says our population of does is dangerously low. I've never seen that many does on our property at one time. Maybe those were all the does in 8T, and there are no more.
  6. I'm in Steuben County, a pretty good deer county. The last two years the odds were low for first selection, and there is no second selection in my WMU. Most of my family and all of my nearby neighbors have been denied doe tags for the 3rd year in a row.
  7. Well said. I got my wife into hunting about 15 years ago. She doesn't bow hunt and generally after week one of the regular season, she'll only go out 1 or 2 more times as she get into the Christmas activities (no problem there, her doing all that gets me out more). She's only taken about 4 does, and two bucks in her "career". A small four pt. a few years back, and a small five point this year. She passed that five on opening day, but took it last Saturday - she was thrilled, it was her best deer! It was a "scrub" buck. I got my daughter into it about 5 years ago. Her first year she took a small eight, second, a big nine. Last year she drove 300 miles up here to pass deer and go home empty handed. She took a 1 and 1/2 eight point on Thanksgiving and will not go home empty handed. Her husband came up for one day last week and took an almost out to the ears seven-point - his best deer. I had my 9-year old grandson (other daughter) sitting with me for my wife's and my daughter's deer. He's hooked! I have now introduced three new hunters into our fraternity, and hunted with three generations of our family on our place this year for the first time - I'm thrilled!. Antler restrictions would have taken that all away from me. By the way, we all got turned down for doe tags for the third year in a row. I did get a landowners tag, and I took her with my grandson sitting next to me. He was thrilled! I also let each one of those bucks walk away (along with quite a few others last week) on the first two days. Let antler restrictions be voluntary, and let social pressure be what it is for the more experienced hunters, or just leave them alone if they are just out there for meat, have limited time/opportunity or what ever. New York is the most restrictive state in the nation. I for one, am tired of restrictions. Safe, legal, ethical - that's what I'm for.
  8. My property was logged in the winter of 2006/2007. There were some pretty barren areas from the tight canopy prior to logging. The following spring I had a "what did I do" feeling when I saw how open everything was. By the second spring/summer cycle I had some good brush and saplings coming up. By the third and fourth spring cycle it was darn thick! In 2009/2010, I had a bear and her three 1st year cubs den up in there. Then I was glad I did it!
  9. This is getting to be a bad year. Prayers for all of the families involved.
  10. Same here, also made a paypal donation to the site back in October and it's never been processed. Sent a follow up PM and never got a response.
  11. That's awesome Grampy! I have a few cameras set up just for that purpose and it's never worked out for me - glad it did for you!
  12. What a great story!! Congrats to a beautiful first buck and especially for the two of you being together for it.
  13. What a tragic accident. I check my safety like I have OCD. It's too easy when you're walking in and out, slinging it over your shoulder and back off to snag a safety on your clothing or some brush. Terribly sad!
  14. Congrats in getting your first buck, and especially in tough weather conditions!
  15. My crossbow is heavy enough without toting a rifle along with it! I can just see myself banging the scopes.
  16. Cant help with the financing info, but around me (8T) land is between $1000-$2000 per acre. The $1000 parcels are usually steep topography. For $2000, it's usually got something going for it, like a good year-round road, decent cellular coverage, conveyance of mineral rights, etc. I also see a lot of difference in pricing when taking into account the size of the parcel. Big parcels frequently sell for less per acre than that 5 acre "cabin site". And remember, sometimes there is a lot of difference between asking price and the eventual selling price.
  17. Yesterday's weather forecast in my area was calling for 25 mph north winds, and rain turning to snow for Sunday afternoon. I have to admit, I'm not much of a fan with that roaring in my face!
  18. Every buck I saw last week was following or otherwise pestering does. It's on!
  19. Remington 700 Buckmasters edition in .270 w/Federal fusion 150 grain. My go to for long distance whitetail cardiac field surgery.
  20. Unfortunately, yes. While I wasn't at all happy with the things he did, the way he did them, and the things he said both domestically and abroad, I actually did consider him my President. He was lawfully elected by the people twice to hold that dignified office. How could I not? It's not like there was another POTUS.
