  1. Hard to see in that photo, but it's thinning a lot on top and in the back. Plus it was died in that photo (woman's advice) but I'm letting it stay gray now. No matter how much you work out, there's nothing you can do about hair loss.
  2. I actually like the bigger bore rifles that shoot at 30-06 velocities. I love the .375 H&H I have, even though it is not hunted, as I have not been able to make that Alaskan Brown Bear dream hunt happen yet. But a Moose hunt in the next few years may happen. I could use the .325 WSM for that, but that rifle was purchased to shoot an Elk someday. I'm a little OCD about using the perfect tool for the job. They're all fun to shoot and get proficient with in anticipation of the hunt they were bought for. When the hunting opportunity arises, I am always ready to go.
  3. I want to get one some day just like your's. Have one in 12 gauge now and it is a great gun. Camo as well. just doesn't have a removable magazine.
  4. A dove season seems to be a political third rail for the DEC. There is no reason we shouldn't have one other than animal rights groups always pushing to stop any new hunting for a currently protected species, be it fur or fowl. Guys shooting them in NY are chancing a very heavy fine. I believe they are federally protected as migratory birds also.
  5. I was leaning towards using the 200 grain bullets in it. They probably produce less felt recoil and if I load Barnes 200 grain TTSX bullets in it, they should have plenty of penetration creating 2 holes for good blood trails. Not that I expect blood trailing will be needed when the shot is good. Why do you like the 225's?
  6. The .223 will be fine if a good penetrating bullet is used. Heavy bullets are best, that is if the rifling twist rate in your AR is fast enough to handle them. The heavier bullets aren't accurate if the twist rate isn't fast enough. I've heard the Federal Fusion ammo works well in the AR for pigs too. Excellent weight retention.
  7. Some pretty clear answers to the question of fawn mortality can be found in this study. https://www.pgc.pa.gov/Wildlife/WildlifeSpecies/White-tailedDeer/Documents/Fawn_Survival.pdf "Abstract Estimates of survival and cause-specific mortality of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns are important to population management. We quantified cause-specific mortality, survival rates, and habitat characteristics related to fawn survival in a forested landscape and an agricultural landscape in central Pennsylvania. We captured and radiocollared neonatal (0.05). Predation accounted for 46.2% (95% CI=37.6–56.7%) of 106 mortalities through 34 weeks. We attributed 32.7% (95% CI=21.9–48.6%) and 36.7% (95% CI=25.5–52.9%) of 49 predation events to black bears (Ursus americanus) and coyotes (Canis latrans), respectively. Natural causes, excluding predation, accounted for 27.4% (95% CI=20.1–37.3) of mortalities. Fawn survival in Pennsylvania was comparable to reported survival in forested and agricultural regions in northern portions of the whitetailed deer range. We have no evidence to suggest that the fawn survival rates we observed were preventing population growth. Because white-tailed deer are habitat generalists, home-range-scale habitat characteristics may be unrelated to fawn survival; therefore, future studies should consider landscape-related characteristics on fawn survival."
  8. I've hunted Bobcat each year for 20 years now. Usually on days when other hunting seasons are closed, or the hunting is slow. I probably put in 10 or so hunts for Bob's each year. I've managed to tag only 2 in all of this time. I've only seen 3 others while hunting that I couldn't take. It's not the most productive hunt, but I believe one of the most impressive. When you see a man walk out of the woods with a Bobcat, especially when he isn't using a dog, you are really seeing a rare sight.
  9. I'm guessing since he's a Vegan, he does not.
  10. It is possible for this guy to be legit. Diet is very important and the gym time required is less when the diet is correct. Is he using steroids? Maybe. But he doesn't look big enough if he is. Gotta respect his condition though. I was in great shape in college and have always been a fitness freak. Diet is the utmost factor for staying in shape. I spend about 2 hours a day, 5 days a week in the gym, but don't work out with heavy weights. Just want to stay fit. I'm 62 now and still feel great. Gotta stay fit to hunt the mountains and remain capable of doing everything else I love to do. Good genetics help too. I'm hiding my face here as I prefer anonymity.
  11. Kimber Montana 7mm-08 with hand loaded rounds using 120 grain Barnes TTSX bullets. Fast, flat trajectory, excellent penetration and weight retention. No lead is just a bonus.
  12. That's the key to NY elections. Everyone who wants Cuomo out of office HAS to vote. I get really frustrated with those who spew a defeatist attitude about the city controlling everything. It only happens when upstate NY ALLOWS them to do it.
  13. Every so often I get a desire to buy another rifle that's a little different. Currently I'm thinking about a .35 Whelen. I like the .35 Remington I already have. I am quite impressed with the ballistics of the .35 Whelen. But I often indulge in these desires only to find I will rarely use it. I have more rifles than I need, but not as many as I want. If anyone has a .35 Whelen, or can help me make this decision, either pro or con, I'd appreciate your input before I pull the trigger on it. All input will be appreciated.
  14. Probably not until it's over. But when the NRA is still around and stronger than ever, it will just be another thing we can point to regarding Cuomo's ineffectiveness and corruption.
  15. Fake news. The NRA filed a suit against Cuomo because he used state agencies to single out the NRA's Carry Guard insurance claiming it is an illegal product. He claims it pays for the legal bills of murderers. Carry Guard pays the legal bills a CCW holder will incur after a justified self defense shooting. Nothing illegal about it. Cuomo didn't stop there though. He pressured any business with a site in NY state that currently does business with the NRA, to stop. That means insurance and banking firms among others. That makes it very hard for the NRA to do business and continue to raise funds. None of this has affected the NRA at this point, but it could if Cuomo's racketeering policies are allowed to stand. The NRA is going to win this lawsuit and the taxpayers of NY are going to have to pick up the huge legal tab Cuomo is going to saddle them with in his misguided zeal to remove your right to self defense. He's pandering to his leftist base at your expense.
  16. Got my license and tags in today's mail. The letter inserted with it was barely readable, like a copy made in a machine that was very low on toner. Maybe the DEC ran out of toner and that's what is causing the hold up.
  17. At one time (prior to the 1980's) in NJ, buckshot was the ONLY legal ammo for deer hunting. Still legal there but hardly anyone uses it. South Jersey drive hunters still do. Some even require it for safety reasons, that I don't agree are safe at all. Let's see, what have I killed deer with? Shotguns in 12 ga and 20 ga using slugs. All sorts of rifles. Recurve bows and compounds. Muzzle loaders. Want to do it with a handgun someday. Never hit one with a car, but took one by hand with a Buck knife. (It was coming right at me). True story. LOL!
  18. I don't use a spotting scope at all for zeroing rifles at 200 yards or less. I use white paper with two orange dots on it for a target. The lower dot is where I aim and the upper dot is where I want the bullet to impact if I want it hitting above point of aim. For most of my rifles, at 100 yards the bullet hits the top dot, which is usually 2" high. At 200 yards it hits the lower dot, which I'm aiming at. My rifles are on at 200 yards. I can see the bullet holes in the white paper and the orange dot, with the rifle's scope set at 9 power. Works well, saves a lot of time and the money to buy a spotting scope. I can also just put some tape over the holes to keep using the same target to zero in if needed. Try it sometime. I have 5 pair of binocs from compact to 10x50. They seem to satisfactorily cover all of my glassing needs. I would not spend money for a spotting scope unless I was shooting in competition or hunting big game out west looking for them at long distances.
  19. I knew what you meant. I was just making a joke that bombed. LOL! Not free at all. We paid up front for all the years we would have to pay and they earn interest on the money to pay for the years we think we aren't paying. Just avoided the price increases by buying it back then. I don't have to pay for the DMP's though.
  20. Years ago, old timers often used a .44 Special revolver and swore by it. The .44 Mag had not been invented yet. The .44 Special would still be a good choice today, especially if you get a nice 6" barreled .44 Magnum and load it with .44 Specials that have good hunting bullets in them. This leaves you the option of going to .44 Mag rounds in the event you think they are warranted. Light enough for dispatching game, but strong enough to stop a killer.
  21. Buddy of mine just bought some acreage at auction that had to be done without any inspection of the land. Turns out it used to have a "Breaking Bad" type of meth community in the middle of it. People were all gone, but the trailers, outhouses and trash was still there. He has teamed up with the local fire dept to do a "controlled burn" in that part of the land to get rid of most of the junk. Otherwise the land is pretty good hunting land.
  22. I believe mine shows up towards the middle of August each year.
  23. Very good shooting for those ranges. Just wondering about the scope caps a little. You aren't shooting through them are you?
