  1. I picked up a 60 pound bag of medium red clover locally for $100 yesterday. Climax timothy was more however. Weather stays like this, frost seeding will be easy this year. I have seen some of last years fancy mixes reduced, like 50%.
  2. I have been out shopping between day after Christmas and now more than all of 2016 combined. I have seen some mark down items, but not near the deals of other years. Affordable hunting cloths I have looked at in the stores are just plain crap. All made in foreign countries ny cheap child labor. The prices keep steadily going up on consumer items and the discounted prices just don't seem to be such a good deal as they once were. Government says 2 % inflation rate but seems higher. Maybe Trump will put a high tariff on imported goods and send this country into a recession.
  3. Getting that time of the year again. Some of the people I know, got caught up short last season with such an early start the end of January. Like it use to be back in the late 70"s. What the plan for those of you that make your own syrup? Expanding? New equipment? Some new people starting in? I'm just small time compared to some of the larger producers on here, but make enough for family with a little to sell. I will be adding around 14 trees, a larger boiling surface area, and a larger holding tank. Hoping for some great tasting syrup like in past years. I can't wait to smell that sweet smelling steam, and end result all bottled up.
  4. As far as have read, county legislature voted December 23rd. Any news on the outcome? Thank you
  5. You have purchased some of the best, richest land in New York state; if you can drain it. I could only wish for land like this. First a word of caution, Keep Fire Away. Once muck is on fire, it can burn for a long time. I have seen muck land burn underground for months , loosing several feet of soil. Nice thing about humus soils are their dry very quickly, in drying weather of coarse.I have seen muck with a foot of water over it in the morning, then pumped out and tractors working on it in the afternoon with the dust flying. Roots crops do the best on muck. I seen corn planted on it; big wind comes up and the corn tipping out by the roots. Lower growing crops are the best bet. What a score! Good luck with it.
  6. Sitting in a cut corn field with three antlerless deer. Snow is whipping in my face. Feels like sand stinging my eyes at times. Those deer are acting like no wind blowing at all. To young to takem, but sure is nice to see' em.
  7. What happen to the term Siberian Express? Cold weather = hunt the foods sources.
  8. It's funny how different it is across the state. We don't fire a shot for a week to ten days after Southern zone firearms season begins.
  9. I went out this morning armed with one of those fancy breakfast bagels, Paula"s donut, an orange ( for the healthy side) and a thermos of black pekoe tea. Watched the fawns in a very relaxed atmosphere. They were having breakfast as I. They moved on by 7:10; right about the time my thermos tipped over, spilling the goodness. Southern arms season ends what; about December 22nd, LOL.
  10. I like to plant things the neighbors (6, 7 mile radius) don't. On a lean nut and apple year like we just went through coupled with a 60 year drought; I had to come up with an offensive plan of attack; a quick growing salad bowl. We started getting the rains in mid August which really added the vitamins for a strong team. .Add I didn't need to deflate the ball to turn a potentially bad season into a clasic, LOL.
  11. We applied rule number 9 this past Monday afternoon; 12/5 on a mature doe.
  12. By time I get done going through all the meat with little to no fat and silver skin on it, the neck meat doesn't get as clean as i like to see it. Most likely the fat, a thin layer always forms at the top of the water.
  13. I have to cook neck meat in the crock pot outside. MY wife says it stinks up the house.
  14. Everyone else give you advise; now it's my turn, LOL. If you live in an area where "you" think deer numbers deserve a rebound, don't shoot a doe.
  15. On my wont to do list is to make a smoker out of an older kitchen oven. Racks are already in place and just add the water soaked oak woodlets.
  16. We are taking our doe decoys, which has in storage for several years out this afternoon to see if this will shake things up a bit.
  17. The DEC.found the answer to your question with doe only areas in Lake Plains and 9F areas last year, during first two weeks of bow and muzzleloader season. Very few. Season is back to where it should be; thanks to the hunting community overwhelming strong support against.
  18. Saw deer a few minutes after 7 this morning when the wind dropped. Got hammered by a cold shower while coming up. Feels like the temps are falling. I overdressed yesterday and underdressed today, LOL.
  19. Deer were out of the corn field hours ago, Just sitting absorbing the day. You all should feel this beautiful sunshine on this last day of November. Enjoying the large flock of robins landing in the corn field along with morning doves and an occasional wood cock.
  20. No way Niagara County has bucks that big, LOL.
