  1. Make sure the right of way is stoneable and driveable..you can't depend on the family land for access (things happen) when it comes time to log you need a way to get back there that won't be cost prohibitive. Price may be a little high for landlocked property.. how can equipment get to fields? So its not really farmable unless wide equipment is allowed on right of way.. permant easement may be better
  2. have a campfire use hardwood. roast some marshmellows .. all the ash you need
  3. i have only found 2 trees that are loaded with apples, and 2 oak that have acorn so far. its usually this way after a bumper crop,, but it makes hunting a lot easier if you find a producing tree. Kind of like a bait pile ...lol oh lets not start on that topic again...
  4. no public hunting land in erie county.. but good state land 20-30 min away.
  5. i am planting turnips now(the bulbs just get bigger..) i have planted in august and lacked the moisture needed.. now i plant 3-4 weeks earlier .
  6. i've had them take my 3d deer head, and head off 3 d turkey as well. bought a square block to shoot and they ate that..i'm beginning to take it personal!
  7. I have been seeing 3 sets of tracks, a 3. in which i believe are from this one. About a 5 in from this bear.. this one shows up in same place every two weeks. the 3rd track is 6.5 inches but i havent been able to get a pic of it i'll get a few more cameras out and try again. The have really stuck in the area this year and am not happy thinking of what they will be doing to my corn later this year if they stay around....
  8. Well after 20 years, decided it was time to rebuild a couple of very productive permanent stands. The rot wasn't to bad but opted for a complete rebuild and increased size. Have a few more permanent to fix (minor repairs) and about 20 more portables to hang. I have a do not enter woods rule for month before the season. so i have under 60 days left... Tis the season!!!
  9. winter rye or wheat is a good option and provides a good fast greenup in spring
  10. i've had does with triples several times. good habitat and winter food till spring green up is key
  11. I prefer corn for the winter and provide enough so there is some left at spring green up.
  12. Lol... I'm sure it was fine..use by dates are based an a certain temp if your fridge was colder it extends the days
  13. Depends on variety.. growing days needed..
  14. I've shot squirrel s with a 36 cal and a 59cal. I hunt turkey witgame blackpowerr 12 ga shotgun as well. Most fun of all hunting is black powder in my opinion!

    Scouting

Year round, 3 cams, 10 more to go up in next few weeks
  16. I never spray down at all a good shower with unscented soap. Leave equipment in a well ventilated area and hang outside under cover..nothing has ever winded me...
  17. Did 4 last year alone with the car. Total..I'm in high double digits..
  18. Grouse prefer young aspen, 1st succession forest. Most areas have out grown the grouse... clear cutting of aspen stands allows suckering by roots and stumps. The buds of this young trees under 20ft tall are winter food source and catkins are spring.. nuts grapes and seeds are fall foods and that's when you see grouse in more mature woods. I have manages a.30Acre piece for grouse and have had very good results.... like any other animal habitat is the first key .....
  19. Yep I had a bruiser opening weekend..no visible beard, huge spurs but I had no choice but to let him walk.... maybe this fall or if he grows one back next spring..
  20. Nice hope nothing get it...kind of sticks out...lol
  21. So yes planting well worth it , and it is also one of my best fall camera locations as nuts fall 1st week or two in november. they do not require cross polination but same species will do trees have to be within 200-500 ft of each other for sucessful polination
  22. Dunstan are 99% american. I have pure which succume to the blught, as well as Dunstan n Chinese. They produce nuts in 5 to 7 years. they do not frost out as they flower inJuly. Are non cyclical. The american nuts taste like sugared almonds raw ,and better roasted. The deer ,bear, squirrels, and other game will stand under them and wait for the nuts to fall (bears will climb and break limbs off to get them) . One must remember.one Of every four trees in the northeast was a chestnut. Acorns were rare and are bitter. Here are a few pics. a year old from a nut last fall.pure american from a nut 15 years old dying from blight but still producing.close up of canker from blight killing tree by girdeling.close up of flower stalks (will be white flowers in about. Two weeks).usually top 1/3 to half of tree produces nuts(previous photo is actually chinese as my Americans are to tall to get close ups.close up bear claw damage from two years ago.(bark damage is how blight enters tree.
  23. i have several in zone 4 they do fine, keep em tubes for a few years. i also have pure american the biggest is finially dying 10-12 in in diameter.
  24. personally i'd plow a 5 tf firebreak around it and burn it... then spray new growth and plant...
