fasteddie
I stopped into Home Depot in Irondequoit today and was going to purchase a Table Saw . Before doing so I went to the Customer Service and asked if they honored the 10 percent off like Lowes does for Military / ex military . She said it depended on the ID card . I showed her my card and she said it wasn't acceptable . I said Lowes honors the card and she said Home Depot doesn't . I told her thanks and said I was heading for Lowes in Webster . She said , "sorry you feel that way" . I said "buh-bye !
MuzzyLoader
And that's why I shop at Lowes... albeit I didn't know Home Depot honored military/veteran status. I've never checked w/HD - maybe they'd honor mine... 10% Service-Connected Disability.
Doc
Unfortunately, she really doesn't care whether you shop there or not. Probably should have had a conversation with the store manager, or somebody that sets store policy. Nothing against the clerks at the counter but their ability to challenge store policy on their own is pretty limited, if you can even find one that even cares. They kind of do as they are told. Paula
lowes has better prices don't they?
fasteddie
Oh , and Lowes will "price match" other stores . A while back , I needed 3 floor jacks . I knew the price at HD which was cheaper than Lowes . The clerk at the store asked if I wanted her to price match and I said , sure go ahead . She called HD and got their price , matched it and took off an extra percentage . That was sweet .
wdswtr
I quit shopping at both of them. Big reason is most of the prices at our local lumber/hardware store is alot cheaper. for example I just bought 10 2x8x12 Pt boards. 3.50 each cheaper than Lowes. Second reason is I think the quality of the lumber is far more superior. last time i got lumber at Lowes I had to sort through 3 times the amount of lumber than i had to buy to find semi decent boards. Local store i picked up the first 10 2x8x12 and not one of them had a problem. Now the only problem with the local store is they carry all higher end power tools and they do cost for quality when some of us guys dont need the high end stuff. Uncle Nicky
LOL...I get lost in those stores, it's about 1/4 mile from the garden center to the sandpaper department. I stick with Sears Hardware or True Value.
fasteddie
I don't shop at Sears anymore . I bought a 7 cu ft chest freezer from them . It lasted a little over a year . The warranty was for one year . I lost almost all of my venison . The store manager was very unsympathetic . I bought another freezer and an indoor / outdoor thermometer . I have the outdoor sensor in the new freezer and the temp reading next to the computer .
landtracdeerhunter
Have to agree about the quality of the lumber at Lowes, HD. The only thing that I have capitalized on is, purchasing in the reduce section. Sometimes they have items that come in handy, for yets say material for not so perfect jobs. Last year, picked up 5 square of 3 in 1 roofing shingles for $40. Come in handy for some out building, tree blind, or that new cooler that's in the works. Also pick up bit and pieces of building products at savings. Edited June 11, 2012 by landtracdeerhunter

Really, I look at some of the lumber they sell and wonder how they have the gall to charge the prices they do. A lot of it is suitable only for firewood. Every year the quality gets worse, to the point where you often cannot find the quality of lumber that you need even if you are willing to spend the whole day sorting. It's pretty frustrating.

I don't blame this on the appliance store as much as I blame it on China. NOTHING is made to last anymore.

Most of the places are like that. I did a small project a couple of years ago where I needed some 2x4s and some trim and it took me an hour to sort through the lumber and find straight pieces that werent all knotty and crappy. Same happened at Home Depot. We are buying a house and one of the first projects I have in mind is a deck. Ill be ordering my lumber from 84 lumber instead of the box stores. Hopefully the quality will be better.
Culvercreek hunt club
I am stuck with Lowes for most now. I was a loyal Chase Pitkin until they closed. I liked their service and products much better. I don't mind paying more for lumber if the quality is their. WNY.....check out Matthews and Fields in Henrietta when you want the lumber. If you are doing PT decking they have doubble kiln dried stuff. it does NOT shrink. THe gaps on my deck are unchanged and I put it on in 97 Edited June 11, 2012 by Culvercreek hunt club
WNYBuckHunter
Ill give them a look. I have to check Rochester Lumber too.
nyantler
I never purchase lumber from HD or Lowes... real low quality stuff... but I do love them for many other things. Lumber yards usually have far better quality lumber... especially framing lumber.
ELMER J. FUDD
Ever hear of Probuild? They beat Lowes, Hd, Page, etc when I built my addition 2 years ago. Price and quality. http://www.probuild.com/Locator Also, I found some chimney parts on Homedepot.com. It said they were at a local store. I get there and they charge almost double??? So apparently I exposed a glitch in their website which shows clearance price on seasonal items that are out of season, but still in stock. I bought the parts anyway, and the store manager offered to refund the difference. Lowes beats HD all day with selection though. I hear the only reason Home Depot can beat anyones price, is on items that are exclusive to them.

landtracdeerhunter
I bought a sizable amount of lumber from 84 lumber back a few years ago. Lumber quality was good. They had quite a size pic bin The clerk u start with is the one that you sees waving when u leave the yard. Got to say their consumer relation skills were great. ELMER J. FUDD
p.s. Probuild delivered the order too. i'll have to dig up my old estimate sheet and give you guys some numbers.
fasteddie
Our 84 Lumber in Ontario closed shop many years ago . The local lumber yards are expensive .
nyantler
I use 84 Lumber occasionally... I usually use local small privately owned lumber stores in my town... I would rather give my money to the local community.. and they will bend over backwards usually to make sure that they keep your business. landtracdeerhunter
Would like to use the locals more, but their price is higher. Got some fir 2x12x20s one time from local yard, beautiful stuff, and well seasoned. Not to many years ago, no HD,Lowes, all local yards, boy times have changed. nyantler
Yeah It can be a bit more expensive at the local store, but that's because the lumber is of much better quality.
Pygmy
Yeah, problems can arise... I remember one time years ago I sent my ex-wife to Cox's to buy me a Seersucker Suit.. She went to Sears... ....
