Buzz Baits

With the upcoming bass season approaching fast, I got to thinking about one of my favorite lures, the buzz bait. I think I might be adding trailer hooks to a few. Anyone else use a trailer hook on lures like spinners and buzzers?

I missed a few good fish on my last trip up north, so it got me considering going back to using the trailer. The northern I had spit the lure sort of put a twist in my knickers, so it's time to look into some alternate methods.

Funny thing is before I really got into fishing me and buddy used to walk a good stretch of black creek fishing with only spinnerbaits and buzzbaits($1 walmart specials!).we fished both underwater and no clue what they were but they caught us a bunch of smallies, rock bass and pike!!!!.chartreuse/white was the go to

I prefer Strike Kings. I've used a few other brands, and even caught fish off those no name Walmart specials for $1. I also prefer a two blade over three, but those threes seem to irritate other fish besides bass.

For me its a single Colorado blade, white or black skirt depending on water clarity. White in clear, black in murky

I started using them after seeing Hank Parker land some great largemouth, so I knew what they were and how to use them before buying any. Even the good ones used to only be like $2.

White and black have always worked well for me around weeds. White and chartreuse in more open water. I used to switch out jig skirts to have a few more options. The sparkly colors worked pretty good on over cast days.

90% of the time, I'll use a stinger hook on spinner and buzzbaits. Dark or muddy water, I use a colorado blade. Clear water, willow leaf blades. Vary the retrieve speed, pause and let it fall. May get you a couple more fish than just a steady retrieve.

Not many thing are more fun then to watch a buzz bait get attacked on a cool summer morning on a glass calm lake.

That is exactly why they are my favorite lure! It gets the heart beating and for me there's no other feeling like it in the fishing world.

I would submit a rubber frog getting blown up in the pads for consideration
I 2nd that.
One time many years ago my buddies and I hiked back to a farm pond that was supposed hold decent bass. We got back there and the thing was covered in Lilly pads. Never threw a frog before so I gave it a go. I don't even think the frog hit the pad for 2 seconds and the pad erupted. It was an awesome experience.

My fav buzz is a strike king mini buzz. Don't need to run a trailer kook on it as it's a smaller buzzbait. But I will usually put a 2 inch curly tail on it for a little more action and bulk. I am not a fan of the trailer hook cause I usually just end up hooking more weeds with it.

You will miss more fish on topwater always but it's a blast. I always have another pole ready with a small senko to throw at missed strikes.

Spinner baits I'm a big fan of the willow leaf and I like the mini king's. And i replace the Colorado with a willow leaf as it comes thru thick weeds better.

X3 on a frog in the pads.

Also consider a speed worm or a speed craw esp if really weedy. You can run it topwater like a buzzbait but also let it drop in holes in the weeds and its way more weedless.

Flippin' frogs is fun. Poppers are a little more my thing over frogs, though. Tossin a big floaty worm/slug bait and twitching it on the surface is a lot of fun too. But I just love a buzzer over all of them. Splish, splish, splish, splish, "SPLASH"!

Im surprised nobody has brought up the old classic top water bass magnet . The Jitterbug .  The bass and pickerel just explode on it. Great luck fishing with them at dusk and early morning and night . Even on a sunny day they were deadly .

That was what i always used in my Grandparents pond when i was a kid. I caught two bass at the same time on one, one time...

I can’t recall ever catching a bass on a Jitterbug, but I didn’t give it that much time.  My grandfather had (3) in his tackle box, one black, one perch finish, and one blue back with white belly. I may have got a largemouth or two at night on the black one years ago.

My favorite nighttime largemouth top bait water was a black Heddon tiny torpedo. Quite a few largemouth went for that on Cuba lake about 30 years ago.

I don’t have a lot of luck with the weedless frogs.  Lots of hits, but not that many hookups.

I will see if I can find any of grandpas old Jitterbugs, and if I find one, I’ll give it a try on smallmouths this summer or fall.  There ain’t no Largemouths in the lake where I go most of the time.
