bubba
http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/Alexandria-Bay-Man-Arrested-In-Fatal-Shooting-105789448.html I am beating a broken drum, but bo would not have helped. As I have stated, hunting incidents are always wrapped around illegal activity. According ot the other reoprts, the shooting took place at 7:10 PM. Sunset that day was 6:10pm. bubba
a stupid way to hunt after dark illegal implements
covert
Definitely, but the stats don't differentiate when poachers get hurt/killed do they? It will still count against the rest of us as a "Hunting accident".
bubba
nope it makes hunters look bad for sure
Culvercreek hunt club
That just sucks....but you know I have to hold the other guys he was hunting with at fault too.....They knew he was illegal and let it fly
Karpteach
Ahhh crap! This incident will definitely give us a black eye. Never mind the guy doing the right thing , got his knee blown off.
bubba
umm they were all hunting illegally, he was the unlucky one. I liked the line he said in court that his eyes were blurred from diabetes, but he shot anyway.
Culvercreek hunt club
Oh...forgot it was 7:10. In all fairness....I have walked out of the woods a couple spots that I hunt up north that take me an hour to get out....Guess I was giving the guy that got shot some benefit of the doubt...other than hunting with a criminal...lol
fasteddie
I hope that dumb ass hasn't been breeding . He couldn't see to well , it was dark and he shot what he thought was a deer with a shotgun during ML season because he didn't own a ML . The guy needs a brain scan ! bubba
25 to 40 in prison may deter him. If my posting this was inappropriate, I apologize
bushnell
Wow when I saw fatal shooting I was thinking that a guy mistoke somebody for a deer. I was dumb founded when I read the story. What a bunch of jacka**es.

HVOprostaff_1
There are so many things wrong with this situation. It is stories like this that i read every year that make me rage.. First if you dont know your seasons dont hunt. Just because you dont own a muzzle loader does not give you permission to use a shotgun. If his vision was blurred by diabetes he shouldnt be hunting in the first place or at least have enough common sense to bring a supplement in case his sugar got low. The hunter safety course teaches be sure of your target and beyond. the beyond is never a definite but your target should be. Also I have had to hike out over an hour in the dusk and dark on the regular and have had oppurtunities at countless deer after shooting light. Yet I have never pulled the trigger. I have wanted to and have been tempted but how can you gaurantee good shot placement. Its unethicle and sad I hope he serves a few years up top to sit and think about his friends family. Gives us all a tarnished name. This is just my opinion but I hope you agree
bubba
according to the whole story, they were hunting at 7:10 pm. It was after hours and they were hunting still
WNYBuckHunter
This guy sounds like a waste of flesh. Drop him in the lake with concrete shoes and flush his genes out of the pool.
Zem18
What a d-bag. I'm with Eddie on this one - I hope he hasn't bred or we will read about his kin in a few years.
outdoorstom
I hope he gets the book thrown at him! 7:10 is pretty dark! I was in Alexandria Bay this morning and saw the watertown times in a vending machine and this story was the headline.
Doc
I remember on the old forum, we had a pretty lively debate about allowing legal hunting hours to be extended to 1/2 hour after sunset. This guy pushed that thought even farther.....lol. Isn't it actually dark at the time this happened? It's got to be darned near it.
bubba
the latest report states the shooting actually took place at 6:50 Pm. However the LEGal shooting hours were over at 6:08PM. By the time the shot took place, yeah it was way too dark to shoot whether your eyes were blurry or not.
SteveB
Accidents are something truly unavoidable for the most part - and are very rare. Incidents are events that are allowed to happen by clear conscious choices being made. This one, and most hunting accidents are really incidents and should be identified as such. bkln
"....Terry J. Hofferberth, 43, who says he has no permanent address and lives with friends, was arraigned..." Scary stuff right there, maybe he shouldn't be thinking about hunting in the first place....
