Any clue what would do this?

That is common for popple to do that.  I have a few just like that that died on the stump and are rotting out while standing.  Almost identical to your picture as well.  They usually fall over before they get to this stage but some dont and this is the result.

Its obvious what it is! A mountain Lion scratching post. Must be some catnip growing nearby...

 

You're blind bro. Look at the claw marks, clearly a Lynx. No way its a bobcat or lion. Only other thing it could be is Tiger.
